Historic hideaway on Skye's quiet Sleat Peninsula, with character-filled rooms, award-winning Scottish dining, and an outdoor hot tub and swim spa

Overview

Set in a restored Victorian hunting lodge on Skye's southern Sleat Peninsula, Duisdale House Hotel faces the Sound of Sleat and the wild Knoydart mountains beyond. Guests stay in one of the island's quieter corners, within a 20-minute drive of Armadale's ferry terminal and Skye Bridge, while Portree is about an hour away by car. A subtle nautical theme—a nod to the Royal Navy's requisition of the property during World War II—is carried throughout the main house, garden lodges, and a two-bedroom cottage. Perks include a two-AA-Rosette restaurant with an all-day menu made with seasonal Skye ingredients, a cozy whisky bar, private yacht moorings, and an outdoor hot tub and swim spa.

Pros
  • Tucked in just off the coastal road on Skye's quieter Sleat Peninsula, you'll have views of the Sound of Sleat beyond the manicured lawn, as well as the gardens from the shared terrace.
  • Built in 1865 as a hunting lodge for the Clan Macdonald of Sleat, Duisdale retains original fireplaces, ornate cornices, and a grand staircase, all complemented by tasteful maritime-inspired interiors.
  • Staff receive top marks for their friendly service.
  • The two-AA-Rosette restaurant is a destination in its own right, showcasing seasonal Scottish fare made with locally sourced Skye ingredients, while the cozy Chart Room is perfect for a dram of whisky (or the hotel's own gin) beside the fire.
  • Treat yourself to a soak in the outdoor hot tub or swim spa (with adjustable current settings for a gentle crawl or something more vigorous) that can be booked in advance for 30-minute sessions.
  • Dog owners will appreciate the pet-friendly rooms and the fact that four-legged companions are welcome in the Chart Room for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Every room has its own character, with the four Seaview Deluxe options in the main house offering some of the best views.
  • Though couples tend to get the most out of a stay here, as most guestrooms sleep two, families will be happiest booking the two-bedroom cottage or the spacious Master Suite.
Cons
  • You'll definitely want a rental car, as Duisdale House sits on Skye's southern peninsula, around an hour's drive from Portree and many of the island's best-known attractions.
  • Room sizes and layouts vary considerably due to the historic building, so it's worth choosing your room category carefully if features like a sea view or extra space are important to you.
  • As with many historic Highland houses, a few interiors show their age, so don't expect the sleek, polished finish of a newly renovated boutique hotel.

Authenticity

Duisdale House Hotel, the flagship of the family-run Sonas Collection, occupies a Victorian hunting lodge built in 1865 for the Clan Macdonald of Sleat. Original features, including ornate cornices, grand fireplaces, and the sweeping central staircase, have been carefully preserved, while thoughtful renovations by Hebridean owner Anne Gracie Gunn weave in subtle maritime touches (like framed nautical charts, model sailboats, and coastal-inspired decor) inspired by her love of sailing and the property's wartime ties to the Royal Navy.

Location

Set on the quiet Sleat Peninsula in southern Skye, Duisdale overlooks the Sound of Sleat toward the rugged mountains of Knoydart—a quieter alternative to the island's more visited northern sights. The 30-acre (12 ha) estate provides easy access to scenic coastal walks and private yacht moorings, while the villages of Armadale and its ferry connections and Broadford are a 15-minute drive away. The Skye Bridge is just shy of a 20-minute drive, and attractions like Portree require about an hour by car.

Rooms & Bathrooms

You can expect individually styled guestrooms, with a slight nautical theme, in the main house (ask for one of the four front-facing doubles with sea views), secluded garden lodges, spacious suites, and a two-bedroom cottage. Many rooms and standalone options enjoy views over the surrounding gardens and/or the Sound of Sleat in the distance, while upgraded categories add extras like private terraces, fireplaces, or additional floor space. Bathrooms vary by room type but are well-appointed with rainfall showers, and many include soaking tubs, underfloor heating (in the lodges), robes, and slippers.

Amenities

Dining is a highlight, with the hotel's relaxed two-AA-Rosette restaurant serving seasonal Scottish cuisine made with Skye ingredients, from fresh seafood to Highland venison. Guests can enjoy breakfast in the conservatory, cocktails or local whisky beside the fire in the dog-friendly Chart Room, or lunch and cream tea on the sunny terrace overlooking the water. Additional amenities include a bookable outdoor hot tub and swim spa, peaceful gardens and walking paths, and private yacht moorings with dedicated facilities for travelers arriving by sea.

Family-Friendliness

The two-bedroom Cottage, just a short walk from the main house, is the best option for families of four. There's added lounge space (in one of the bedrooms), two bathrooms, and a sofa bed, while the Master Suite can accommodate one child on its sofa bed. The children's menu will satisfy young appetites with its two- or three-course options, including mains such as breaded chicken, grilled fish, and local sausages.

Sustainability

Duisdale supports the local community through its food and drink program, with menus built around seasonal produce, locally landed seafood, and ingredients sourced from Skye and the surrounding Highlands. The hotel even produces its own gin using botanicals grown in its herb garden (reducing the need for imported ingredients).

On the surface, it is a lovely hotel. The location is good, the grounds are beautiful, excellent front desk staff (especially the blonde woman, but did not get her name) and we especially liked the two bartenders in the bar, who recommended the gins for us to try. Where the hotel fell short were the hotel rooms. The rooms would be very nice if not for the constant loud hum from the kitchen. We liked the hotel, but would not stay there again because of the hum. Where the hotel fell short were the hotel rooms. The rooms would be very nice if not for the constant loud hum from the kitchen. We liked the hotel, but would not stay there again because of the hum. The excellent woman at the front desk told us she has brought up the issue with the owners many times, as guests have complained. If we were to go back to this hotel, we'd stay in one of the few cottages/guest houses on the property.
