Kasbah Titrit, Aït Benhaddou

3.9 (37 reviews) Upscale
Basic guest house offering a spa with multiple pools and a restaurant with al fresco dining

Overview

Nestled in the Ounila Valley of the High Atlas, Kasbah Titrit offers a simple yet tranquil retreat amid spectacular landscapes rich in Amazigh cultural heritage. Its location in the village of Tamdakhte is a haven for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and history enthusiasts. The valley, once a significant caravan route, is scattered with ancient kasbahs and adobe villages. The hotel is a mere 6-minute drive from Aït Benhaddou and about 40 minutes from Ouarzazate. As you unwind, you'll find yourself surrounded by almond groves and nestled among the gardens of Tamdakhte.

Kasbah Titrit's rooms and suites can feel a bit outdated or basic, yet all offer high ceilings, earthy construction, and wax-finish walls that showcase local architecture. Each unit features a spacious layout and a private terrace with views of the Atlas mountains. Bathrooms are crafted from tadelakt, a water-based, shiny, and waterproof lime plaster traditionally used in Moroccan design. Past kimkim travelers have mixed feelings; while some enjoyed the hotel and its views, others felt it was too outdated.

At Kasbah Titrit, you'll have access to the property's wellness area, which provides two hammams, a sauna, an indoor Jacuzzi, an outdoor panoramic Jacuzzi, a heated swimming pool, two massage rooms, a treatment room, and a gym. Enjoy a meal under the stars or a sunset aperitif on the panoramic terrace while taking in views of the Tamdakhte gardens and the Ounila Valley. The hotel's restaurant offers a blend of French and traditional Berber cuisine prepared with fresh, seasonal produce.

That said, the rooms didn’t feel very clean and were in need of some sprucing up. Sheets, pillows, and towels were a bit ragged. Lights were either dim or not working well, Bathtubs needed a really good scrub. One cracked window and others with a pretty heavy coating of dirt/dust. One of our two rooms would not lock from the inside (used real keys here, but the key wouldn’t turn the lock from the inside). Also, worth noting that my daughter had food poisoning after eating dinner here. While this could have happened anywhere and may not have been the hotel’s fault, it was the only time this occurred on the trip and combined with the relatively strange way dinner was served (5 chicken tajine orders were served in 3 tajines and 2 on plates, with French fries in the tajines and rice on the plated versions), this just felt like it was worth noting. We rolled with it, but there was another table that was clearly very upset with how their meal came out and they sent a few dishes back.

I don’t think I’d necessarily stay at this hotel again.

The only available shower had no walls or curtains and the shower head sprayed water everywhere - so it was impossible to shower without flooding the entire bathroom.
The dinner was a set menu and we had only the option to select our meat without any indication of how it would be prepared. While the meal was delicious - we felt like we were somewhat trapped and didn’t have the option to pick something else.
Perhaps the experience would be different during the high season - we were the only guests at the Kasbah and would not care to repeat the experience.

We discovered used underwear left behind in the room by a previous guest. Made us suspicious about the degree of cleanliness of the room overall.
