Set in the scenic Soča River Valley, Bovec is only 13 miles (21 km) from Kobarid. The most convenient way to make the trip is by car—rental or private transfer—in just 30 minutes. The route follows the picturesque Soča River—famous for its emerald waters—the entire drive. This 13-day itinerary highlights the region and offers a few hikes along the way.

The regional bus is another option with a similar travel time of 30 minutes. Note that in the summer months, departures are more frequent. If you’re up for an adventure, you can follow Stage 25 of the famous Alpe Adria Trail and hike from Bovec to Kobarid. This trail also follow the Soča River. At 17 miles (27 km), it takes about 7.5 hours to complete.

By Rental Car or Private Transfer

Duration: 30 minutes

Making the journey by rental car or a private transfer is the most convenient option. The drive is very scenic, following the Soča River via Road 203. You’ll get plenty of jaw-dropping views of the river valley and the Julian Alps. There are numerous pull outs to snag some photos, or to let cars pass (it’s a two-lane road).

If you want to stretch your legs along the way, the short hike to Boka Waterfall is very nice, as is Slap Kozjak (Kozjak Waterfall) near Kobarid. The small historic village of Drežnica is also worth the slight detour.

By Bus

Duration: 30 minutes

The regional bus is a decent option: it’s budget-friendly and takes about the same time as driving. Depending on the season, however, departures can be quite limited. You’ll find more options in the busy summer months, but not as many outside of the tourist season. Occasionally, you’ll have only one departure per day, so it’s best to plan ahead and check with the bus station in Bovec.

By Foot

Duration: 7.5 hours

If you’re up for an adventure, a bonus option is to make the journey by foot and follow Stage 25 of the famous Alpe Adria Trail—linking Austria, Slovenia, and Italy. The route is very scenic, hugging the left bank of the Soča River and gaining elevation as you reach the village of Drežnica. An additional three miles gets you to Kobarid.
