The road from Erfoud to Merzouga is simple, straightforward, and quick. There are a number of stops and slight detours along the way that travelers may wish to stop and experience.
Among these is Rissani, a desert oasis near Erg Chebbi. When stopping in Rissani, make sure to visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Chérif, the eponymous tomb of the founder of the Alaouite dynasty, along with an Islamic garden, which is open to non-Muslims. On Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, a souk draws people from surrounding villages and provides a slower pace and less crowding than souks in the larger cities.
If a camel expedition to Erg Chebbi isn't part of your itinerary after arriving in Merzouga, you may wish to add it on this journey. To do so, you'll have to make sure to hire a driver with a 4x4 vehicle that you specify in advance can make the trip to Erg Chebbi. The magnificent dunes are close to Merzouga formed by wind-blown sand.
