Some of our most memorable experiences included e-biking on Waiheke island, an incredible kayak journey to see the glow-worm caves, a helicopter ride up to hike on the Tasmanian Glacier and a luxury train ride up to Arthur’s Seat. Hotels were good, especially M Social in Auckland and Kamana Lake House in Queenstown both with great views, and Koura Lodge with rooms a few steps from the lake.
Working with KimKim was also a pleasure. We constantly referenced the KimKim App which showed hotels and activities, including conformation numbers and pop-up detailed descriptions.

This is a must to do. The scenery is breathtaking and pictures don't do it justice. The ship is very cool and the captain was able to pull the ship within a few feet of soaring cliffs and waterfalls. We could feel the mist from the falls. The kayak trip from the boat was really fun and you get the chance to swim off the back of the ship....mighty cold water, but worth it. To be honest, we didn't think this was going to be anything we wanted to do; however, it was spectacular! The boat captain, Hannah, was very knowledgeable and Mou Waho Island was way better than expected. The short hike to the top is steep in some areas, but well worth the views. Try to find the unmarked trail near the lookout area to get to the other side of the island for breathtaking views and quiet.

The two wineries we visited were terrific and the boat ride was really nice, so it turned out to be a great first day of our trip. Met some nice people and ate fresh mussels and salmon. We ended up visiting two other wineries the next day before headed south. It's important to note that we love NZ wines so the start of our trip in this area was perfect.

We have just returned from an extended tour of New Zealand, which we planned with the help of KimKim's New Zealand specialists, Monika and Michelle. Our trip involved two couples traveling together over thirty days, and travel to Great Barrier Island, North and South Islands, Kapiti Island and Doubtful Sound via internal airline flights, ferry, train, bus, shuttles and rental cars. Along the way we stayed in thirteen different cities and towns. Our vacation also included two multi-day backpacking (tramping) trips that we arranged ourselves and incorporated into the KimKim itinerary. In short, our vacation had many moving parts.

Happily, there was not a single hitch/glitch at any point. Every hotel was expecting us, every shuttle driver was on time. Our accommodations were clean and comfortable and located conveniently to venues, restaurants, etc. Monika's and Michelle's recommendations were all very helpful and tracked with the kind of experiences were all were looking for.

We have used KimKim services before, have recommended KimKim to our friends, and will certainly use KimKim again where we choose to do our own planning (as opposed to tour groups).

We worked with Michelle to plan our trip to New Zealand; the trip was beyond our expectations --it was simply fabulous! We have planned most of trips in the past, but opted to use kimkim for this trip as we had no knowledge of what to visit in New Zealand. We are so happy we made this decision as we would have never been able to plan a trip with the kinds of experiences that Michelle booked for us. We thoroughly enjoyed the variety of experiences Michelle booked for us, from visiting Doubtful Sound, to the 4 x 4 trip on a Station, to the kayak trip at the blue penguin sanctuary, to the Geo-thermal park and the experience at the Dark Sky Reserve. As fabulous as those experiences were, our absolute favorite experience was our stay at the Te Karaka Lodge. Whoa! Whoa x 10. We received such lovely pampered attention while enjoying exquisite accommodations and personalized attention from the two incredible chefs. I'm glad that you suggested that we added one more day to our trip to accommodate that extra night. The tour of the farm the next day by James, the farming manager, was informative and allowed us to better understand the life of farming professionals. That stay was THE perfect way to end our trip in your warm and beautiful country. Also, you allowed us enough free time for us to make a couple of our own side trips on our travel days; we made note of the suggested towns along the way and stopped at several during our car rides; they were charming. T
Finally, we don't have enough words to express how much the NZ culture and way of living made an impression on us. We were fortunate to be in your harmonious country during the Middle East crisis; the cultures of our two nations are remarkably different and New Zealand was our tonic to sooth our weary brains and hearts.... Thanks again, Michelle, for helping have such a memorable experience.

I don't have the words to say how much I enjoyed our trip through New Zealand. Yes, I could have booked everything myself and saved a little money. But Kathrin booked us into wonderful hotels I'd never have considered, and got us on interesting side trips. We were on the Marlborough wine tasting and cruise when we got a call letting us know our 9:30 ferry to Wellington had been canceled. Kathrin quickly got us on an earlier trip with a different cruise line. That alone was worth the extra having an agent cost. We had to get up early, but that was so much better than missing a day in Wellington and our trip to Weta Workshop. Another couple on the cruise were supposed to take the same ferry. They got no notification at all, and the last we saw of them, were still trying to book a ferry. So a big thumbs up to Kathrin.

You don't have to just accept kimkim's suggested itinerary. We swapped a trip to Willowbank Animal Sanctury for the suggested whale watching, and booked a suburban B&B near Zealandia instead of staying at a downtown Wellington hotel.

Highlights of the trip were seeing glow worms in Te Anau, the native birds on Kapiti Island, Weta Workshop, Zealandia, and the Hobbiton movie set. We came home with nearly 6,000 photos. We tried to photograph as many of the native birds as possible.

Don't let the no photography rule scare you away from the Te Anau glow worm cave. You can't get a good photo on a tour anyway. Just enjoy the view.

Milford and Doubtful Sound were pretty, but we didn't see them at their best. We hit a freak rainless period, so the smaller waterfalls and mist weren't there. If you like wildlife, stop at the Te Anau bird sanctuary. The DOC removed some of the birds, but they still have takehe. We took the path along the water and saw several small song birds.

Dunedin was the one bad spot. We got back from the overnight Doubtful Sound Cruise (where they treat you like royalty and the food is delicious and plentiful) about 12:30. By the time we battled the traffic and got to our downtown hotel, it was too late to see anything. On the plus side, we had a fabulous room with a washer and dryer.
We skipped the Otago Peninsula in favor of the Moeraki boulders, arriving about 7 am. We got all the photos we wanted before busloads of tourists arrived and climbed all over the rocks.

Christchurch was lovely. We rode the tram to the Botanic Gardens, where I regreted not taking a zoom lens to photograph the birds. The next day we took the train to Arthur's Pass. The food on the train was excellent, and we enjoyed hiking.

On the way to Blenheim, we visited Willowbanks. It's small but well designed, with a nice assortment of animals. They have heritage farm animals and native New Zealand animals. We didn't manage to see a kea in Fiordland, but saw several there, as well as 3 kiwis.

We did the aforementioned wine tasting and cruise in Blenheim.

I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Weta Workshop in Wellington. Our second day we took the cable car up and walked back through the gardens. Since we were there at 7:30, parking was no problem. We arrived at Zealandia by 9:30. It's a large predator free park in the middle of Wellington. We were struck by the lack of birdsong in New Zealand. Imported predators have nearly wiped out the birds. Zealandia was full of song.

Kapiti Island was even better. The birds were almost deafening, and because they live on a predator free island and are never hunted, they were fairly easy to photograph. We spent the morning in the older reforested area. In midafternoon we moved to the other side, where the lodge and cabins are located. We made the mistake of hiking the Boulder Beach trail. It had just reopened, so maybe we saw it at its worst. The first part is easy. Then you hit rocks and driftwood, and no trail markers. We finally turned around and went back.
The people who run the lodge are so kind. The food was delicious.
That night we did a red light walk and saw two kiwis. We slept in a glamping tent with a fabulous view.

By Tongariro Park we were wearing out. Luckily we stayed at the River Lodge, a beautiful old hose out in the country. Daniel, the landlord, must be the busiest man on earth. He's very outgoing and cheerful, and makes a great breakfast.
We had a nice view of Mt. Ruapehu from the balcony, and walked along the river photographing birds. We did a little hiking to see waterfalls.

We went to the two Waitomo caves that allow photography. One is a small limestone cave with nice formations. The other, Ruakuri has a little of everything; formations, glow worms, and plain walls.

Our last stop was Hobbiton. Depending on what you prefer, the light is better for photography in early morning. We opted for the nightly banquet, where you get 4.5 hours instead of 2.5, and get to see the buildings lit up at night. The food is great, but try to sit at the end of a table. Most of the food is placed there, and at least at our table, nobody passed it around. We had to stay an extra day to get banquet tickets, and it was so worth it. The perfect end to a perfect trip.

A beautiful hotel with a great view. The breakfast buffet was wonderful, but I was surprised at how small the dining room was, so that people had to wait. One morning we were directed to a dining room on another floor, which was fine. I was disappointed that the walking trail to the central city was closed and we had to walk the highway sidewalk. We used the shuttle service to and from central city a number of times and luckily, we learned to make reservations. It was very timely and worked well. We had been told it would go to different locations in the city if needed, but that was not correct. But we made it work without any issues.

Upon arriving at this Hotel, it felt more like a Motel 6! It had no character, seemed old and outdated; there was not a patio or any place we could sit to enjoy company with our travel mates. There seemed to be a bar, but it appeared closed and very small. Our room was particularly dreary with a dark brown carpet that invited the belief that it was dirty. I did not feel comfortable stepping with my bare feet on the carpet. The whole building seemed old and outdated. The only plus for the hotel was the breakfast buffet which was very good. The front desk staff were not helpful, and even somewhat rude. I asked about the availability of coffee and maybe some fruit for our very early travels, and they told me to make coffee in my room (which was terrible) and to go to the grocery store before it closed! Maybe it was the tone in which they said it, but it bordered on being rude. Not helpful.

Authenticity & Character
Seemed old and run down.

Unfortunately, because of a mistake with our hotel booking, we only had one night here. We noticed immediately that the property was for Sale. Which is rather concerning. The grounds were not well kept. Our room was pretty small and felt crowded. I liked having the patio where we could sit. The dining area was very nice, and we noted that all of the guests were scheduled around each other to allow for private dining at the one table. It was also awkward to get coffee, since it had to be prepared by the staff - not easily available. The breakfast itself was wonderful - we all liked it. The staff was very courteous - we enjoyed many aspects of the property. I don't see the second night where we had to relocate to the Edgewater Hotel! We liked this hotel very much!

Authenticity & Character
The overall character was good - it just seemed to need a little more care.

It was not easily accessible to the city of Wanaka. it took us some time to get back and forth.

The Hermitage Hotel
Mount Cook Village

This hotel was fantastic, with all of its amenities and the views! It was crowded at times, and we were not able to take advantage of the coffee shop and its patio. It took a little time for us to get familiar with the restaurants and need to make reservations. The breakfast buffet was great, and we did have dinner at the hotel one night - which was likely the most extensive buffet I have seen for options. Our room had a fantastic view of Mt. Cook - we loved it. It would have been nice to have a balcony to be able to sit outside and enjoy the view with a glass of wine.

Authenticity & Character
A modern hotel, but great amenities.
Location
The hotel was located close to the village, so that we could walk to the nearby sports bar and dining. We also walked to the nearby Hooker Valley trail - to walk as far as we could with the trail closed.

All of the staff members were very helpful and courteous.

Lake Brunner Eco Lodge

The Lodge has a lot of character and different room styles. The dining room and outdoor patio are lovely, with a nice fireplace in the dining room. We had thought the Lodge would be closer to the lake than it was, but it was just a short walk. It was very peaceful.

Authenticity & Character
This property is older, and shows some wear in places, but older character is very endearing.
Location
We walked to see the glow worms, only a short distance away. Also, there is a waterfall nearby.
Staff
Brenda and her staff were sweet and very helpful in recommending options of things to do.

This activity turned out well, and we are grateful for the help of the travel agent the night before to be sure the wine tour did not prevent us from getting to our Hot Tub experience. The Wine tour driver was so courteous and was aware of our time crunch to get from the wine tour to the Hot Tub. He volunteered to drop us off directly at the Hot Tubs and make our schedule work. We are grateful for everyone working to make everything work together. The wine tour itself was interesting and a great way to see the communities near Queenstown and learn about the local wine industry. Our tour guide was excellent and told us a lot of facts about the community and the wine industry. The wineries were interesting and it was a nice way to spend the day.

We were not expecting an hour bus drive from Queenstown, but it was a comfortable bus. We liked jet boat experience; it was something we had not done before. The boat driver was obviously an expert! We also enjoyed the funyaks - it was an exciting challenge to steer the boats clear of rocks and other boats. The directions of our funyak guide were at times confusing, but we made it without getting wet! It was an active experience, and I loved the views of the river and the mountains, along with the stories about the filming of the Lord of Rings.

Cruising the Milford Sound wasn’t really our cup of tea. It’s a beautiful fjord, but the boats were overcrowded and moved too quickly to really allow us to soak it in. It felt more like a cell phone photography tour than anything special. Everywhere we tried to just exist and enjoy the ride for a while, someone else's phone ended up in our faces as they tried to get their perfect photo. It did have a small magical moment where the boat got close enough to the falls to get everyone very very wet. It was chilly so everyone (except my husband and I) ran for shelter. We loved the feel of the water and the seclusion it allowed. It was well worth being cold. Just for that moment, I’d recommend doing it once especially if you have limited mobility. The little walk was lovely though and I really enjoyed learning so much about the local plant life. Our guide for that was a joy to be around and really seemed to have a wealth of knowledge to share. All of the private taxi arrangements and booked activities went perfectly. Our hotels were centrally located and made it easy to walk to areas of interest. My only caveat is that I emphasized that we were interested in nature and viewing scenery from The Lord of the Rings. However, in Queenstown we were booked on the gondola ride, which was very crowded and chaotic. The scenery from the gondola was spectacular but it was so quick for the price. Fortunately, next door we discovered the Kiwi Park Sanctuary, which houses rare and beautiful native birds. It was the same price as the gondola but we were able to be there for a couple of hours and it was a much more congenial experience. The cruises we were booked on were wonderful and we had great luck with the weather. The Fiordland cruise did rain part of the trip but this was not unexpected due to its normal climate.

Monika responded promptly and courteously to all of our communications. She ensured that our dietary needs were met at the Māori Experience dinner. She provided contact information in the event we needed assistance during our trip. We were all very pleased with the arrangements.

This location was actually an air bnb. The upper floor is where the owners reside when they are using their vacation home. Our unit was on the ground floor. They did have an outdoor line or indoor drying rack but if you’re staying for only a quick stop, your clothes may not get dry. The kitchenette was very small, just a hot plate and no prep space. Our specialist was Ruth Grau. She did a very good job in suggesting locations and activities for our trip. Ruth was very communicative in the beginning until she became ill. At some point about two weeks before the trip she did not respond to our inquiries for several days. We then received an email, saying that she was very ill and it will take a few days until she’ll get back with us. We were a little stressed that we won’t be able to be booked in hotels because of the high demand during the high season. Why were our inquiries not delegated to someone else at this point?
We also asked several time for the breakdown of the costs of hotels and activities. We were told by Ruth that Kimkim does not provide this information. Why doesn’t Kimkim provide this information? It would be very useful in making decisions.
During the process of making changes to our itinerary one night lodging was left out at Te Anau. We contacted Tayla and she made other arrangements at a much reduced quality for what we paid at the Distinction Luxmore Hotel. We greatly appreciated Tayla’s prompt response and her covering the cost of that night’s lodging.

Our first day was rainy with low clouds - a very moody effect. The second day was clear with great views and still water.

The landscape on the South island of New Zealand is amazing. We traveled from the west side to the east side and enjoyed it all. KimKim and Monica, did a great job of providing a well paced itinerary with a ton of variety. All the details were taken care of and we still had flexibility to go at our own speed.

Driving on the left was easier that we anticipated. Traffic was light and other drivers were relaxed. We put on approx 1700 km/1000 miles and it worked out great. Don't let the "wrong" side stop you from driving.

We really like the process of fine tuning the itinerary with a local travel agent before the trip even started. Monica was wonderful. We did not need it but, it was nice to feel supported if we had any issues while on the trip. This is our third KimKim trip (Norway and Nepal) and it has worked out well each time.

This was my first trip internationally for my husband and I( age 73) in more than a decade. I had never planned a trip like this ever before. I chose KimKim Travel because of the way they interacted with me. So many details I had no clue about. The agent named Monika was so kind and knowledgeable in the way she presented everything in a digital world. It made it so easy to navigate. All of the suggestions she made were spot on, and the accommodations were perfect for us. The activities she suggested made it very memorable for us. We loved every aspect of it and met people along the way who enhanced our journey. We will definitely come back and we already have learned where we would want to explore on a second trip to New Zealand. Monika kept in touch with us and that was very comforting in a Country we had no knowledge of. The car rental, hotels, excursions, and plane tickets were thoroughly explained so we could navigate the instructions easily. Even so, we laughed at our silly mistakes, like driving around a round-a-bout three times until we got the correct directions. The Glow Worm hike in the dark was exhilarating. Relaxing at the Polynesian Spa in Rotorua was awesome. ÑEw Zealand people are so kind, helpful, and friendly. Thank you for being our guide!

Michelle planned a fantastic trip! We loved New Zealand! Everyone has heard about the spectacular natural beauty - it is that and much more! In every corner of the country there are more awe inspiring views, fascinating microclimates to explore, gorgeous and well designed paths and treks (tracks), reserves and parks and open space, rural beauty with sheep - so many cute sheep! - and cows and horses, and rare protected species, - it makes your heart sing. What you may not know as much about are the people - their quality of life, the collective commitment to and appreciation of all the native flora and fauna . The steps they keep taking to more fully respect and integrate and honor the Maori. The pace is slow. People are patient, kind, easy going, generous. Your nervous system slows down. You realize it's possible to find a place where people live by different values and are proud of where they come from. Four 60-somethings, with two us celebrating our 70th. 3 weeks so we could see north and south islands. Our only regret - we should have planned a month. A few highlight places and excursions, thanks to Michelle. Milford sound. Stargazing in the hot springs of Lake Tekapo/Wanaka.. Farm and off-road tours. Hiking in Abel Tasman Natl Park and Mt. Cook. The Queenstown House B&B. Newton Heights B&B., visit to Flea Bay. The Te Papa Museum in Wellington. Te Karaka Lodge in Waikato. Kaikoura. And great food and wine everywhere. Thank you KimKIm, Michelle and the people of New Zealand for an uplifting adventure.

A few activities needed to be rescheduled because of weather, but the rescheduling process went very smoothly for the most part. One minor glitch was that the folks with the Milford Sound tour were trying to reach us because of a weather cancellation, but they did not have contact information for us so we did not find out about the cancellation until we went to check in for the activity. It would have been helpful to know about the cancellation earlier in the day so we could have make some other plans for that day.

A few of our favorite activities were Skydiving in Queenstown, the Fly/Cruise/Fly trip to Milford Sound, and the Glowworm evening activity in Rotorua.

I really appreciate your understanding around the weather‑related changes. New Zealand certainly likes to keep us on our toes. I’m glad most of the rescheduling went smoothly, and I’m sorry about the Milford Sound communication hiccup. That’s genuinely helpful feedback, and I’ll make sure we tighten up that process so future travellers get updates as early as possible.

It was a pleasure helping you plan this adventure, and I’m so glad you enjoyed your time here. If you ever feel like exploring more of Aotearoa, I’d love to help you craft your next journey.
