Hotel Reviews
The Rees Hotel
Queenstown

A beautiful hotel with a great view. The breakfast buffet was wonderful, but I was surprised at how small the dining room was, so that people had to wait. One morning we were directed to a dining room on another floor, which was fine. I was disappointed that the walking trail to the central city was closed and we had to walk the highway sidewalk. We used the shuttle service to and from central city a number of times and luckily, we learned to make reservations. It was very timely and worked well. We had been told it would go to different locations in the city if needed, but that was not correct. But we made it work without any issues.

Authenticity & Character
Beautiful lobby and rooms.
Location
It was a 40-minute walk to the central city. The shuttle service was valuable.

Kingsgate Hotel Te Anau
Te Anau

Upon arriving at this Hotel, it felt more like a Motel 6! It had no character, seemed old and outdated; there was not a patio or any place we could sit to enjoy company with our travel mates. There seemed to be a bar, but it appeared closed and very small. Our room was particularly dreary with a dark brown carpet that invited the belief that it was dirty. I did not feel comfortable stepping with my bare feet on the carpet. The whole building seemed old and outdated. The only plus for the hotel was the breakfast buffet which was very good. The front desk staff were not helpful, and even somewhat rude. I asked about the availability of coffee and maybe some fruit for our very early travels, and they told me to make coffee in my room (which was terrible) and to go to the grocery store before it closed! Maybe it was the tone in which they said it, but it bordered on being rude. Not helpful.

Authenticity & Character
Seemed old and run down.
Location
Good location on the lakeside street, but no lakeview - as we thought there would be.
Staff
See my comments above.
Cleanliness & Comfort
While the room was large enough, the condition of the room seemed run down.
Lime Tree Lodge
Wanaka

Unfortunately, because of a mistake with our hotel booking, we only had one night here. We noticed immediately that the property was for Sale. Which is rather concerning. The grounds were not well kept. Our room was pretty small and felt crowded. I liked having the patio where we could sit. The dining area was very nice, and we noted that all of the guests were scheduled around each other to allow for private dining at the one table. It was also awkward to get coffee, since it had to be prepared by the staff - not easily available. The breakfast itself was wonderful - we all liked it. The staff was very courteous - we enjoyed many aspects of the property. I don't see the second night where we had to relocate to the Edgewater Hotel! We liked this hotel very much!

Authenticity & Character
The overall character was good - it just seemed to need a little more care.
Location
It was not easily accessible to the city of Wanaka. it took us some time to get back and forth.

The Hermitage Hotel
Mount Cook Village

This hotel was fantastic, with all of its amenities and the views! It was crowded at times, and we were not able to take advantage of the coffee shop and its patio. It took a little time for us to get familiar with the restaurants and need to make reservations. The breakfast buffet was great, and we did have dinner at the hotel one night - which was likely the most extensive buffet I have seen for options. Our room had a fantastic view of Mt. Cook - we loved it. It would have been nice to have a balcony to be able to sit outside and enjoy the view with a glass of wine.

Authenticity & Character
A modern hotel, but great amenities.
Location
The hotel was located close to the village, so that we could walk to the nearby sports bar and dining. We also walked to the nearby Hooker Valley trail - to walk as far as we could with the trail closed.
Staff
All of the staff members were very helpful and courteous.

Lake Brunner Eco Lodge

The Lodge has a lot of character and different room styles. The dining room and outdoor patio are lovely, with a nice fireplace in the dining room. We had thought the Lodge would be closer to the lake than it was, but it was just a short walk. It was very peaceful.

Authenticity & Character
This property is older, and shows some wear in places, but older character is very endearing.
Location
We walked to see the glow worms, only a short distance away. Also, there is a waterfall nearby.
Staff
Brenda and her staff were sweet and very helpful in recommending options of things to do.
Cleanliness & Comfort
I loved our room. It was very spacious and had a bay window looking out at the lake.

We were not expecting an hour bus drive from Queenstown, but it was a comfortable bus. We liked jet boat experience; it was something we had not done before. The boat driver was obviously an expert! We also enjoyed the funyaks - it was an exciting challenge to steer the boats clear of rocks and other boats. The directions of our funyak guide were at times confusing, but we made it without getting wet! It was an active experience, and I loved the views of the river and the mountains, along with the stories about the filming of the Lord of Rings.

The Guided Walk was longer than I anticipated, but it was a lovely walk! The group was larger than I expected also! There were 13 guests and the hiking guide. The waterfall at the end of the hike was great, and the hiking guide was also very good. The walk did seem a little rushed, but I know we were on a schedule to be able to make the Cruise. The Cruise was the favorite part of the activity. It was beautiful to see all of the waterfalls and the steep sides of the sound. The Cruise went further out into the open ocean than I expected. We saw dolphins as we came back into the sound - a real treat!

This trip was a dud! There were no icebergs floating and the glacier was not very recognizable because of all of the dirt. There was no calving of the glacier. Our guide did the best he could and was very knowledgeable. But after the boring 20 minute walk with 40 other people, and then some time in a boat with little to see - it seemed like a waste of time.

We loved the helicopter experience. It was a first for all of us. We had an excellent pilot, and he was great at telling us interesting facts. Our scheduled flight was pushed back a half hour, and we were told to check in an hour before the trip. We waited around for 1 1/2 hours - which was not a great start to the experience.

I never met any of the staff but I wasn’t put off by that at all. It was weird to have people doing lawn maintenance well before checkout though. It ruined any feeling of privacy since there is the giant sliding glass door. I’m not sure how regular of an occurrence that is though.

The shower floor didn’t drain well so the water went up around the toilet in just a couple minutes. Then there was no bathroom fan so the room smelled like musty toilet water the whole time we were there. Also, they maintain control of he thermostat at the front desk so when we woke up cold in the middle of the night we had to call to negotiate upping the room temps.

The glowworm caves were magical. Using red lights instead of the bright white for cave features in the way in could have helped our eyes adjust to the dark better and would have improved the experience. I loved the lack of cell phones and the request for silence. It made the experience a lot more memorable. I would have appreciated more time to read all of the info signs that are up everywhere and enjoy the put part of the cave. I felt very rushed and a bit like cattle being herded.

Walk the famous Milford track and cruise on Milford Sound

Cruising the Milford Sound wasn’t really our cup of tea. It’s a beautiful fjord, but the boats were overcrowded and moved too quickly to really allow us to soak it in. It felt more like a cell phone photography tour than anything special. Everywhere we tried to just exist and enjoy the ride for a while, someone else's phone ended up in our faces as they tried to get their perfect photo. It did have a small magical moment where the boat got close enough to the falls to get everyone very very wet. It was chilly so everyone (except my husband and I) ran for shelter. We loved the feel of the water and the seclusion it allowed. It was well worth being cold. Just for that moment, I’d recommend doing it once especially if you have limited mobility. The little walk was lovely though and I really enjoyed learning so much about the local plant life. Our guide for that was a joy to be around and really seemed to have a wealth of knowledge to share. She tried her best to make it a memorable experience for us. Also, the lunches were delicious and well balanced!

All of the private taxi arrangements and booked activities went perfectly. Our hotels were centrally located and made it easy to walk to areas of interest. My only caveat is that I emphasized that we were interested in nature and viewing scenery from The Lord of the Rings. However, in Queenstown we were booked on the gondola ride, which was very crowded and chaotic. The scenery from the gondola was spectacular but it was so quick for the price. Fortunately, next door we discovered the Kiwi Park Sanctuary, which houses rare and beautiful native birds. It was the same price as the gondola but we were able to be there for a couple of hours and it was a much more congenial experience. The cruises we were booked on were wonderful and we had great luck with the weather. The Fiordland cruise did rain part of the trip but this was not unexpected due to its normal climate.

Monika responded promptly and courteously to all of our communications. She ensured that our dietary needs were met at the Māori Experience dinner. She provided contact information in the event we needed assistance during our trip. We were all very pleased with the arrangements.

Lake Tekapo

This location was actually an air bnb. The upper floor is where the owners reside when they are using their vacation home. Our unit was on the ground floor. This meant that we could hear them walking overhead and water through the plumbing. They did provide a washing machine but no dryer. They did have an outdoor line or indoor drying rack but if you’re staying for only a quick stop, your clothes may not get dry. The kitchenette was very small, just a hot plate and no prep space. Lovely views and next to a neighborhood hiking trail. There was a large covey of California Quails wandering nearby.

Very centrally located to restaurants and our booked boat cruise. We were placed in a two bedroom suite that was set up for handicapped accessibility, which unfortunately meant that the shower was open concept and it was impossible to limit the water wetting most of the bathroom floor. We ended up using most of our towels to mop up. Another quaint feature is that the front desk was in the same room as an ice cream shop.

Our specialist was Ruth Grau. She did a very good job in suggesting locations and activities for our trip. Ruth was very communicative in the beginning until she became ill. At some point about two weeks before the trip she did not respond to our inquiries for several days. We then received an email, saying that she was very ill and it will take a few days until she’ll get back with us. We were a little stressed that we won’t be able to be booked in hotels because of the high demand during the high season. Why were our inquiries not delegated to someone else at this point?
We also asked several time for the breakdown of the costs of hotels and activities. We were told by Ruth that Kimkim does not provide this information. Why doesn’t Kimkim provide this information? It would be very useful in making decisions.
During the process of making changes to our itinerary one night lodging was left out at Te Anau. We contacted Tayla and she made other arrangements at a much reduced quality for what we paid at the Distinction Luxmore Hotel. We greatly appreciated Tayla’s prompt response and her covering the cost of that night’s lodging.

We enjoyed all the planned activities very much. Most of the accommodations were good.

The landscape on the South island of New Zealand is amazing. We traveled from the west side to the east side and enjoyed it all. KimKim and Monica, did a great job of providing a well paced itinerary with a ton of variety. All the details were taken care of and we still had flexibility to go at our own speed.

Driving on the left was easier that we anticipated. Traffic was light and other drivers were relaxed. We put on approx 1700 km/1000 miles and it worked out great. Don't let the "wrong" side stop you from driving.

We really like the process of fine tuning the itinerary with a local travel agent before the trip even started. Monica was wonderful. We did not need it but, it was nice to feel supported if we had any issues while on the trip. This is our third KimKim trip (Norway and Nepal) and it has worked out well each time.

The agent named Monika was so kind and knowledgeable in the way she presented everything in a digital world. It made it so easy to navigate. All of the suggestions she made were spot on, and the accommodations were perfect for us. The activities she suggested made it very memorable for us. We loved every aspect of it and met people along the way who enhanced our journey. We will definitely come back and we already have learned where we would want to explore on a second trip to New Zealand. Monika kept in touch with us and that was very comforting in a Country we had no knowledge of. The car rental, hotels, excursions, and plane tickets were thoroughly explained so we could navigate the instructions easily. Even so, we laughed at our silly mistakes, like driving around a round-a-bout three times until we got the correct directions. The Glow Worm hike in the dark was exhilarating. Relaxing at the Polynesian Spa in Rotorua was awesome. ÑEw Zealand people are so kind, helpful, and friendly. Thank you for being our guide!

In every corner of the country there are more awe inspiring views, fascinating microclimates to explore, gorgeous and well designed paths and treks (tracks), reserves and parks and open space, rural beauty with sheep - so many cute sheep! - and cows and horses, and rare protected species, - it makes your heart sing. What you may not know as much about are the people - their quality of life, the collective commitment to and appreciation of all the native flora and fauna . The steps they keep taking to more fully respect and integrate and honor the Maori. The pace is slow. People are patient, kind, easy going, generous. Your nervous system slows down. You realize it's possible to find a place where people live by different values and are proud of where they come from. Four 60-somethings, with two us celebrating our 70th. 3 weeks so we could see north and south islands. Our only regret - we should have planned a month. A few highlight places and excursions, thanks to Michelle. Milford sound. Stargazing in the hot springs of Lake Tekapo/Wanaka.. Farm and off-road tours. Hiking in Abel Tasman Natl Park and Mt. Cook. The Queenstown House B&B. Newton Heights B&B., visit to Flea Bay. The Te Papa Museum in Wellington. Te Karaka Lodge in Waikato. Kaikoura. And great food and wine everywhere. One minor glitch was that the folks with the Milford Sound tour were trying to reach us because of a weather cancellation, but they did not have contact information for us so we did not find out about the cancellation until we went to check in for the activity. Quirky fun hotel. A-frame rooms with exposed beams. If you get a room with a view it's amazing. Not sure what the experience would be like without one. There was a lot of angst and confusion to start about what to bring and wear on this first day. We weren't aware that we were doing the trip backwards so we'd planned to hike, which was usually the way day 1 started but we started kayaking. Had to quickly unpack and repack on the floor of the tour company and the change. Feel like that could have been better communicated before so we could have planned better. Not a great start to the trip. We started a bit later so the winds had whipped the waves up (as they do most afternoons). We wound up bikin g the last sector because the guide said the next leg was going to have waves 3 times as big.

This was a tough day of hiking. We had prepared for the uphill over the pass. It was tough but the path was generally well taken care of. The downhill side of the pass was way tougher than we expected. Endless large rock steps were tough on the muscles and joints. My wife fell a few times and this is where most of the injuries occur. The first 1/3 is above the tree line so can be windy. Once into the forest it gets steep and rocky. There are stairs around the waterfall to start but the the trail descends into miles of rocky steps. If you wear knee braces then put them on for this one. Springs and wet trails just add a slipping factor to the fun.

This was easily the most beautiful hike we've ever been on. We had the benefit of great weather. It felt warm but like we were hiking in air conditioning. And the moss covered forest was unlike anything we'd seen in our lives. Sounded like this was the dryer side of the hike but still must get a lot of rain. Something like 200-300 inches/yr and 200 days annually of rain. The grade is slowly uphill with a little difficult rock scrambled caused by a slip near the end. Marking the trail across the slip was a little tricky but they had a guide posted to show us the way. Hidden Lake off-shoot was OK but the Prairie Lake swim was great. Take the plunge and swim quickly under the waterfall. Then swim back quickly before your limbs go numb from the cold!

I highly recommend the half day bike trip for Arrowtown, the Milford Sound excursion, the one day Routeburn Track hike (13 miles so long but totally worth it!), and the jet boats out on the Dart River. Angelo was our guide on the hike and he was so entertaining and informative. All of it was amazing and I would happily do it all over again. One last thing - we were supposed to take a flight back from Milford Sound and that got canceled due to wind. It ends up being a LONG day with a lot of time on a bus when you have to take it back, and yet I would still do it. The sound is gorgeous. Thanks Paula!

G'day Tiffany & Marck.

It was wonderful working with you and planning your vacation to New Zealand and Australia.

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback. It truly means a lot! I’m so happy to hear how much you enjoyed New Zealand. The Rees is one of my favorite properties to recommend, and I’m thrilled it worked out so well for you. Having the apartment space and laundry is definitely a big bonus on a longer trip.

It’s wonderful to hear that all of your excursions were such a success. The Arrowtown bike ride, Routeburn Track hike, Milford Sound, and the Dart River jet boats are some of the most memorable experiences in that region, so I’m glad they all lived up to expectations. I also love hearing that Angelo made the hike even more special — guides like that really elevate the whole experience.

Milford Sound can definitely turn into a long day if the return flight is canceled due to weather, but I completely agree with you — the scenery there is so spectacular that it’s still worth it. I will be there next week! :)

Thank you again for trusting me with your trip and for taking the time to share your experience. It was truly my pleasure to help plan it for you!

Please do keep in touch!

Cheers,
Paula

We had the meal where they put together a selection of their choosing and each item was so delightful - Like a Michelin restaurant. From Christchurch we went to Tekapo Springs and enjoyed a morning soaking in different temperature pools with mountains in the background - so beautiful and relaxing. That night we stayed up late and went to the Dark Sky Project, where they took us to very dark deserted place to tell us about the night sky. We saw the Southern Cross, Jupiter and its rings and its 4 moons, We saw other galaxies - Loved it!. Then on a Cheeky Kiwi van with others to Queenstown the next day. Thrilling walks for views of Mt. Cook and so many "Oh My Gosh" sights. We went on the Appellation Wine Tour - 4 wineries with a tasty meal after winery #1. It was so good that we joined the Kinross wine club. The gondola ride that we did after that was another ' oh my gosh" beautiful experience. Yes, we did more that day - we went on the Walter Peak Steamer to an amazing dinner - actually too much wonderful food to choose from - it was a buffet but we enjoyed the sheep shearing demonstration after that. Next day's highlights was the Milford Sound cruise. Goodness - gorgeous waterfalls, smooth waters, peaceful. Back at the fabulous Rees hotel we enjoyed some light snacks in the bar area before we got a perfect night's sleep. Next headed to Franz Josef on another Cheeky Kiwi bus. It was a long day and possibly too many stops but each one was beautiful so who'd want to miss them? Uma knew we would get in late so she arranged dinner to be included at Legacy Te Waonui. That was one of the best meals of the trip & that's saying something. Next day a Scenic Cruise of lake Mapourika with Joe. A small ship with just our group and 4 others young ladies. Joe was so personable felt like family. We all loved it so much and views of Franz Josef glacier and all the natural beauty that is New Zealand. So after the peaceful cruise we had a nice meal in town and then had a 4 wheeler adventure with Franz Josef Wilderness. That was exhilarating to be sure: rainforests, glacier beds, rivers, mud - wow! At 71 yrs old I had never done this before. The last day of the trip was a highlight. We took the Tranz Alpine Train trip from Greymouth back to Christchurch. Exceptional trip. Views and vista galore and we saw the hugest most vibrant rainbow I'd ever seen. Next day smooth sailing with our transfers to airport and then home to Texas. Couldn't even envision a better trip !

Don’t truly have a rating for this as weather cancelled the trip and we were told this is not an infrequent occurrence. I am sure it is an excellent experience but I would have a back up plan and it would have been nice to know in advance there was a chance of not getting to go.

Our four week trip to NZ was customized after an iterative process of inquiry and response, including by phone with Ruth. She listened well and offered incredibly helpful insights. We followed her advice in most cases, and she offered various options for us to consider by way of guided tours, etc., as electives beyond the basis itinerary. We selected some of those to be included. The entire trip from arrival to departure including hotels, car rental and ferry booking was organized and communicated really well. All worked out perfectly. It turned out that a medical emergency intruded in the final week of our trip and the local agents were wonderfully supportive to manage and adjust the itinerary and give a sense of local expertise in the local time zone. My wife and I cannot speak more highly of our experience and plan to use kim kim again in our future travel plans.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Scenic Hotel Cotswold in Christchurch. Despite my initial expectation that it would be lackluster, it turned out to be great.

Fox Glacier

The Heartland Hotel Glacier Country in Fox Glacier was quite disappointing, but we were advised that accommodations in that area wouldn't be top-notch. It was basic at best, although the local hospitality was undeniably welcoming.

Pear Orchard Lodge
Nelson

The Pear Orchard Lodge was a delightful surprise. The lodge offers a beautiful setting outside of Nelson. It featured a well-equipped common kitchen, perfect for those who enjoy cooking, and it was shared only between a few rooms. Additionally, having access to a washing machine for a small fee was incredibly helpful during our travels.

The Full-Day Jet-Boat Adventure and Funyak River Safari in Queenstown was enjoyable, but I felt the description didn't match the experience. While the initial jet-boat ride was exciting, the later sections with kayaking were slower, as the guides needed to accommodate everyone. Next time, I'd probably just opt for the shorter, more thrilling jet-boat trip.

I am so sorry they got to experience the New Zealand medical system but was glad we could assist with getting things back on track once they were ready! This is a basic hotel with all that we needed. I would give it a 5 but some folks may disagree with me because it is not 'high-end'. We needed a room for 2 nights knowing we would use it only to sleep and do a final pack. It more than accommodated us. We had room to spread out, washer/dryer to help deal with soaked dirty clothing before packing for a 28 hour flight. It is a 10 minute or so walk from the grocery store, Subway, local movie theater (see the short documentary about the fjordlands). We were totally happy and had no complaints

Michele was able to listen to what places and activities we were looking to experience and she was integral in helping us to accomplish those goals. The hotels were clean with friendly staff and transfers between locations went smoothly. We especially enjoyed biking through the wineries outside of Queenstown and the wine tasting trip via ferry to Waiheke Island. The overnight cruise in the Doubtful Sound was spectacular with great food and hospitality. Kayaking on Tasman Lake in the Mt Cook area and chipping and chewing on one -thousand year ice was sweet! I had beautiful day fly-fishing catching brown trout outside of Nelson. These were just a few of the amazing experiences we had traversing the countryside of New Zealand
We would certainly utilize Michele and KimKim's services for future trips and would highly recommend them!
