What you'll do
Your Camino de Santiago adventure begins in San Sebastián, where you'll meet your local trekking guide and set off along a short portion of the famous Christian pilgrimage trail. The full 500-mile (800 km) route stretches from France across northern Spain to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, where pilgrims have been journeying for over a 1,000 years to pay homage to the shrine of Spain's patron saint. Today, you'll head east out of the city, starting with a climb up a steep trail to the cliffs above San Sebastián.
Pause at the top to look out across the rugged Bay of Biscay coastline, then follow the trail through sheltered forests thick with beech, oak, and chestnut trees. Continue along sheer sandstone cliffs, skirting the base of the 800-foot (243 m) Mount Ulia, and pass ancient aqueducts and the Faro de la Plata, a 19th-century lighthouse that resembles a turreted castle. Throughout the journey, your guide will share stories of the area's history, culture, and religious importance, and you'll enjoy plenty of dramatic photo stops.
After about 2.5 hours of hiking, you'll spot the traditional fishing village of Pasaia San Pedro, with boats bobbing in its harbor below. Descend to wander its cobbled streets and stop at a quaint taverna to enjoy a drink and refuel with some typical pintxos, such as tortilla (Spanish omelet) or patatas bravas (fried potatoes). Afterward, a comfortable transfer will take you back to San Sebastián.
