What you'll do
This guided full-day excursion begins when you meet your driver-guide at the Edinburgh Bus Station and board a comfortable minibus with the rest of your small group. Grab a window seat and enjoy the views as you begin your journey west toward the shores of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park—known as the "Highlands in Miniature" for the diversity and drama of its natural landscapes.
As you leave the capital behind, your driver will point out landmarks like Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, and you'll pause outside Falkirk to admire The Kelpies, one of Scotland's most iconic modern landmarks. Designed by Glasgow-based artist Andy Scott, these 110-foot-tall (30 m) sculptures pay homage to the shape-shifting water horses of Scottish folklore. Make sure to keep your camera handy to capture their spectacular setting overlooking the Forth & Clyde Canal.
Continuing west, you'll reach Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, which straddles the boundary of the Highlands and Lowlands along the Highland Boundary Fault. Scotland's oldest national park is also home to the UK's largest freshwater lake, and it's to the "bonny banks" of Loch Lomond that you'll head upon arrival. Set off on a gentle walk along the water's edge, taking in far-reaching views of the surrounding mountains, and learn how you're walking in the footsteps of Rob Roy MacGregor, one of Scotland's greatest folk heroes.
Break for lunch (not included) in the village of Aberfoyle, then make a final stop in Stirling. This ancient city and its clifftop castle have served as a pivotal royal stronghold since the 12th century, playing a dramatic role in the bloody Wars of Independence. You'll have time here to explore the hilltop castle (entry included) and look out over the hilltop Wallace National Monument, which commemorates the day William Wallace led his troops to victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Then it's time to get back on the road, catching one last view of The Kelpies as you return to Edinburgh in time for dinner.
