What you'll do
This full-day excursion begins in the morning, when you meet your driver/guide at the Edinburgh Bus Station and board a comfortable minibus with the rest of your small group. Your destination is the Kingdom of Fife, a small peninsula with magnificent coastal scenery, colorful fishing villages, and ancient castle ruins that lies within easy reach of the Scottish capital. Start with a scenic drive across the Firth of Forth, and pause for a spectacular viewpoint over the red iron arches of the UNESCO-listed Forth Bridge, a miracle of engineering that was the longest bridge in the world when it opened in 1890.
Once you've crossed over into Fife, watch the landscape shift to rolling Lowland hills and fertile farmland, and catch a scent of the sea air as you near East Neuk (meaning "East Corner" in Scots). This small stretch of Fife's 117-mile (188 km) coastline is one of its prettiest, dotted with a string of storybook fishing villages and windswept sandy beaches. Pull into the largest village of Anstruther ("Ainster" to the locals), and stretch your legs on a walk around its cobbled streets and traditional port, where small boats still bring in the day's catch with the tides.
The journey continues with a short but spectacular coastal drive to St Andrews, where the medieval town's headland is guarded by 450-year-old castle ruins. You can choose how to spend your time here: you might want to get a glimpse of Scotland's oldest university, take a stroll around the "birthplace of golf" at the iconic Old Course, or dive deeper into the region's rich history at the remains of the 12th-century St Andrews Cathedral. You'll also have plenty of time to break for lunch (not included)—make sure to do like the locals and end with a sweet treat from local favorite Jannetta's Gelateria.
The final stretch takes you inland to the Lomond Hills, where you'll make a stop in Falkland, Scotland's first designated "conservation village." Your guide can help you make the most of your time here, whether you want to spot Outlander filming locations among the 17th-century laneways or step through the twin-towered gatehouse to discover the Renaissance splendor of Falkland Palace, a royal hunting estate beloved by Mary, Queen of Scots. Afterward, you'll get back on the road toward Edinburgh, skirting the glassy Loch Leven and crossing the Firth of Forth once more to roll into the capital in time for dinner.
