What you'll do

Your adventure begins in Tromsø, where you'll board a comfortable bus, complete with WiFi and restroom, along with a small group of fellow northern lights seekers. Your guide for the evening will use their knowledge of the local microclimates to find the clearest skies, even when Tromsø's cloud cover causes concern. This targeted approach ensures the best possible chances of seeing the aurora borealis. The drive usually takes about 45 minutes outside Tromsø, but it might be a bit longer depending on the weather.

Once you've arrived at an optimal viewing location, you'll be treated to steaming hot drinks and sweet snacks to keep you warm and comfortable during the Arctic night, all the while your guides share fascinating insights about the dancing lights and stories about the local culture. Here, you can set up your camera (rent a tripod for your best shot), take in the dramatic surroundings, and enjoy the peaceful solitude of the area. Then, strike a pose as your guide captures a portrait of you with the auroras as the backdrop, a nice souvenir to remember the experience by (and available online following the experience).

Note that while the northern lights can't be guaranteed, your guide's effort and expertise ensure the best possible chance of seeing them.

This tour takes you on a packed bus more than an hour outside of town for dark skies. The staff are pretty quiet. Only went to one location. No guidance on where to look, what you're looking for, or how to take photos...that would help. A bit more narrative of a history of the area would help. Others on the trip stand in front of your pictures, use their flashlights, without regard to others. Read more

Tips for future travelers

Since you may not get back to your hotel until 2:00 a.m. I would not plan any early morning activities the next day, especially when traveling with teenagers.

The guide is familiar with the local microclimate and can find a spot where the Northern Lights are likely to be seen, even if it is cloudy in Tromso. We were lucky, needing to travel only about 45 minutes outside of Tromso. The guide set up a campfire and had warm drinks for us. He had an undergraduate degree in physics and was a graduate student at the Arctic University of Norway in Tromso, studying clean energy and its integration into the grid. Not only was he able to explain the science behind the northern lights, he also provided insight into the vibrant scientific and cultural landscape of Northern Norway. Hearing fellow travelers' stories about the campfire was also interesting. We were richly rewarded for our patience with a spectacular show of the lights.

Tips for future travelers

Be prepared to be patient! The northern lights can be elusive but don't give up!
