What you'll do
Starting in Piazza San Marco, you'll meet a guide who will escort you to the gondola pier. It's a short walk that takes you past notable monuments like the Doge's Palace, a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture, before you arrive at the pier. Step aboard a traditional Venetian vessel—flat-bottomed and asymmetrical to balance the gondolier's weight—and ease into the gentle rhythm of the canals while your personal musicians serenade you with their song (typically an accordionist and singer).
As you glide onto the Grand Canal, Venice unfolds from a new perspective. Admire the sweeping curves of centuries-old palaces and the domes of Basilica Santa Maria della Salute, one of the city's most recognizable landmarks, including the storied Ca' Dario, another 15th-century Gothic gem, shrouded in local legend. Soon, your gondolier will guide you away from the main thoroughfare and into narrower canals, called rii (singular: rio), revealing a quieter side of the city near Teatro La Fenice and the Baroque San Moisè Church.
Here you'll get to see everyday Venetian life take place, with locals crossing low stone bridges and timeworn facades reflected in the waterways until your return to the pier.
