What you'll do

This four-hour, small-group excursion starts with a pickup at your hotel in Kalampaka or Kastraki. Set off in a comfortable minivan for the short, scenic drive that takes you deeper into the UNESCO-listed region of Meteora, home to spectacular natural rock formations topped by ancient monasteries. You'll start with a visit to one of two 14th-century monasteries: Agios Stefanos or Saint Nicholaos. Take in sweeping views from their perches atop the rugged rock clifftops, and marvel at the intricate architecture as you learn about their rich history and religious significance.

Next, head to the town of Kalabaka to visit the Church of the Virgin Mary. This thousand-year-old church is the oldest intact monument in the region, with roots that date back to the seventh century CE and the remnants of an ancient temple to Apollo within its walls. Your knowledgeable guide will share fascinating stories and legends of the town and church as they take you through the interiors, pointing out the Byzantine wall art and mosaic floors.

Your next stop is just a few miles north of town, at the ancient hermitages of Bandovas. These hand-carved caves were hewn into the side of sheer rock walls in the 11th century CE, and once served as isolated quarters for the monastic community's most devout members. As evening approaches, it's time for the most dramatic moment of the evening, when your guide takes you to one of the best panoramic lookout points in Meteora to catch a colorful sunset. Settle in at your spot on a cliff's edge, and enjoy the cool breeze as you watch the sky, mountains, and monasteries set aglow in shades of pink and orange.
