Vertical Naples Tour, Naples

Overview

Discover Naples from top to bottom with a walking tour that makes its way downhill through the historic city center. Following an “urban trekking” path, you’ll experience Naples’ signature mixture of sights and smells complemented by the warmth of its people and the sounds of daily life. The city is dynamic, combining history, art, tradition, music, and food, offering something for everyone! You’ll discover what makes this city so unique and sometimes contradictory.

Start from the top of Vomero Hill at the scenic viewpoint, Belvedere San Martino. Enjoy the most beautiful view of the Gulf of Naples, the sprawling city, and towering Mt. Vesuvius. To get the best vantage point, stand on the terrace of St. Martin’s Charterhouse. To descend the hill, you’ll walk down the quiet stairs of Pedamentina, one of the most ancient footpaths of the city built in the 14th century. Its 414 steps connect the hillside of Naples to its historic center via a scenic passageway.

As you continue down the steps, enjoy the views of ancient houses and glimpses of the sea. You’ll pass the famous B&B of Mr. Pasquale Nocerino, a violin player, and his wife, Giovanna, a ballet dancer. This neighborhood is where Baudelaire lived for some time, and Marguerite Yourcenar placed her tale “Anna, soror…” From the Pedamentina, you’ll also see the city’s historic main street, Spaccanapoli, also known as Decumano Inferiore, which cuts the old town in half.

Next, you’ll officially arrive in Naples’ historic center as you pass through the lively, authentic, and colorful Pignasecca Market. The market is the biggest in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a stroll along Spaccanapoli, perusing its craft shops and main piazzas, listening to your guide tell stories of folklore and ancient tales. Turn into the alley of San Gregorio Armeno and browse a historical craft shop owned by the Ferrigno family, famous for the oldest handmade Neapolitan crib.

The tour comes to an end with a pleasant stop to taste the real Neapolitan espresso. Pair your authentic java with a selection of traditional pastries and biscuits beloved by the locals.
