Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • This is about as local as it gets: sharing meals, learning recipes, or hearing stories from the owners (Yorgos and Clio), who are incredibly warm and welcoming.
  • Enjoy hearty field-to-fork food with ingredients supplied from the family's farm, with the option to purchase small quantities of Yorgos' rakı, olive oil, and cheeses.
  • The setting, with sweeping views of mountains and valleys, is peaceful; it's a great base for hiking.
  • You'll get to immerse yourself in rural living, from exploring the farm and learning to thresh and make cheese to learning to cook family recipes.
  • Rooms have character with rustic details—stone walls and wood beams—that add to the charm (ask for a room with a view and a fireplace).
Cons
  • You'll need a car to get here and explore the region.
  • Archontiko Manias is rustic and homey, with simpler bathrooms, older furnishings, and a more lived-in feel overall.
  • Not all rooms are equal, and some are noticeably better than others. It's worth requesting one of the top options (especially those with views and fireplaces) to get the best experience.
  • Mattresses tend to be on the firmer side.

Authenticity

Set within a family-owned mansion—run by the husband-and-wife team, Yorgos and Clio Manias—the archontiko (manor house) preserves its regional architectural character: stone architecture and fireplaces, and wood-beam interiors and Old World furniture. The family property is shaped by generations of tradition, with cultural connections running deepest through the kitchen and farm. You'll taste recipes made from ingredients grown, raised, and prepared by the family; olive oil, cheeses, herbs, and rakı included, and enjoy opportunities to cook, farm, and share stories.

Location

Perched on the slopes of Mount Psiloritis above the village of Axos in central Crete (about an hour west of Heraklion), you'll enjoy sweeping views of the Kouloukonas range, Liti gorge, Geropotamos river, and even the distant northern coastline. The setting is remote, surrounded by nature and hiking trails, great for disconnecting and exploring the island's interior. You'll need a car to get here and to explore beyond. That said, the location places you in a historically rich area tied to Minoan, Roman, and Byzantine culture. Nearby, you can visit any of Axos' seven Byzantine churches, the Roman archaeological site of ancient Oaxos, and the Wooden Sculpture Museum, as well as a couple of cafés and tavernas. Sfendoni Cave is a 5-minute drive south, while Idaion Andron (the cave where Zeus was born) is another 45 minutes away.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Ten guestrooms, studios, and two-bedroom apartments are individually styled and vary in layout, with traditional, countryside touches such as stone walls, fireplaces (in most rooms), and heavy wooden furnishings and ceiling beams. Units may include kitchenettes, lofted layouts, and private outdoor spaces with expansive views of the mountains or valleys. Comfort levels can vary by room, so choosing one with a view and a fireplace tends to offer the most memorable stay. Tiled bathrooms are simple, if not a little dated, aligning with the property's more rustic, family-home vibe rather than a polished hotel.

Amenities

The Iperoon restaurant and café is a highlight, serving hearty farm-to-table Cretan fare (reservations required). Meals are crafted using ingredients sourced from the family's land, including house-made cheeses, olive oil, herbs, and rakı (small quantities available for purchase), and the views are exceptional, with misty mornings adding an otherworldly quality to the landscape. Outdoor terraces, a grilling area, and cozy indoor spaces with rustic stone fireplaces create inviting spots to relax, while other amenities center around the small-scale experiential offerings put on by Yorgos: hiking in the surrounding mountains, visits to local monasteries and farms, and cooking classes.

Family-Friendliness

The guesthouse works well for families, especially those interested in nature and hands-on cultural experiences. Larger residences with multiple bedrooms and kitchenettes sleep 3-4 guests and include board games and puzzles, as well as thoughtful safety precautions such as baby gates and socket covers. Cots are available upon request. Kids can interact with the property's farm animals and participate in activities like cheesemaking or hiking, and the in-house restaurant offers child-friendly options.

Wildlife

You'll likely encounter domestic animals, including sheep, goats, chickens, and rabbits, as well as birds and native plant life throughout the property. The nearby mountains and valleys are also home to a variety of wildlife, best experienced during hikes or guided walks.
