Pros
  • Well-preserved history in the houses' architecture and decor helps guests immerse themselves in the local mountain village culture.
  • Both the garden and terraces are especially relaxing and peaceful thanks to the abundance of herbs, flowers, and views of the village and mountain.
  • Bigger families or groups can check out the Zephyros house, which has three bedrooms to sleep up to five people.
  • The location gives the option of both peace and liveliness, as you can be in the town center with its restaurants and shops in just a minute.
Cons
  • The property is more like a house than a hotel, so it's not the right fit for those looking for amenities like a spa or a pool.
  • These historic buildings are in their original form, so there are no elevators here, and all of the units have steps to get up to the bedrooms.
  • The traditional style can feel a bit dark due to its use of dark wood and fabrics.

Authenticity

The three cottages have modern amenities like TVs, electricity, and WiFi—but other than that, they're time capsules with vintage furniture, antique objects, and the traditional design of mountain homes from the early 1900s. This is a hotel that's firmly rooted in its time and place, and perhaps it's no coincidence that it's located right next to a beautiful 200-year-old church. It's a good place to stay for those looking to experience authentic Cretan mountain life.

Location

Situated in a lush garden next to the centuries-old church of Agios Georgios, the three houses of Kalimera Archanes are just steps away from Eleftherios Venizelos Square. Heraklion is 30 minutes away by car, the airport is 25, and the Palace of Knossos is 15 minutes by car. Explore the archaeological sites of Fourni and the Minoan Sanctuary on Mount Juktas overlooking Archanes either by car in 10 minutes (or by walking in an hour).

Rooms & Bathrooms

The three cottages share the same traditional Greek mountain style: dark wood, woven textiles, vintage objects like sewing machines, and even a functioning 1950s-style oven. They all have terraces and are split-level, with the ground floor featuring a kitchen and living room. Where they differ is in size. Zephyros is the largest, with three bedrooms, and it can sleep up to five people, while Avra is the smallest and can accommodate up to three.

Amenities

Kalimera Archanes Village doesn't have a pool, spa, fitness center, or hot tub. Travelers can relax outside in a gated garden courtyard. The property isn't accessible for travelers with limited mobility, and parking is on the street, which is narrow and steep.

Family-Friendliness

With spacious villas and a garden for running and playing, the Kalimera Archanes Village is a solid choice for families. Kids under age six are charged a child rate, and a crib or cot may be added at no additional charge for kids up to age three. The largest villa, Zefyros, has three bedrooms and two bathrooms—ideal for families with children.

Other Highlights

Kalimera Archanes Village doesn't have a restaurant or bar, but breakfast is served daily. Options include yogurt, fruit, eggs, savory pastries, bread, and jam. Restaurants and shops are within walking distance of the hotel.

Quaint hotel in a cute village, but probably not our cup of tea.
Pros:
* The owners are very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was a feast!
Cons:
* It was a bit out of the way, since we were only in the area for 2 nights, probably would have prefered to stay in Heraklion.
* The beds were very old, and not the most comfortable.
* To have a hot water shower, you have to turn on the water heater a 30 mintues before the shower. While not a huge deal, not very helpful with kids.
