Overview

Sitting pretty in Faro's Old Town, Opus One Luxury Guest House makes for an ideal base for exploring the city's cultural and coastal highlights—the marina and Chapel of Bones can be accessed within minutes on foot. Individually decorated rooms lean into Portugal themes they're named after, like the Church Room, Orange Tree Room, and Beach Room, with upgraded suites featuring furnished balconies and jetted tubs. Guests can unwind by the fireplace in the lobby, grab a book from the library, enjoy the outdoor pool, snack bar, and an in-room massage, and partake in on-site wine tastings.

Pros
  • Opus One Luxury Guest House is conveniently in the historic heart of Faro's Old Town and within walking distance to the marina, cathedral, and the Chapel of Bones.
  • If you're arriving into Faro by plane, the hotel offers round-trip airport shuttle service (for a fee).
  • Most of the themed guest rooms look out over the hotel's seasonal pool and outdoor (covered) dining area.
  • To explore beyond Old Town, you can borrow a bike from the hotel for a small charge.
  • Breakfast comprises simple, local products, served in a more intimate setting than you might find at other hotels within Faro.
  • Staff provide exceptional service and receive top marks for their warmth and attentiveness.
Cons
  • Streetside parking is unpredictable at best, though the staff can help you secure a spot.
  • Opus One isn't accessibility friendly with only stairs leading to rooms and common areas.

Authenticity

Set in the city's historic Old Town, Opus One Luxury Guest House connects travelers to the Algarve's traditions with personalized service, local, modest ingredients, and curated wine tastings that highlight regional flavors. Breakfast is a slow, thoughtful affair—served at the table with seasonal, high-quality products sourced from nearby producers. Rooms draw inspiration from Portuguese themes—like the Lemon and Ship Rooms—reflecting the coastal and agrarian spirit of the region.

Location

Sitting in the historic downtown area of Faro, you're within a 10-minute walk to a number of Old Town attractions, restaurants and tavernas, grocery stores, and the marina. Igreja do Carmo and its chapel of bones are only 4 minutes away on foot. The Faro Cathedral is another 2 minutes past the marina and next to the Municipal Museum (great for understanding Faro's Roman, Moorish, and medieval history). You'll have to be savvy about street parking if renting a car. Though if not renting, a bus stop is up the street, and the train station is a 5-minute walk. The popular Praia de Faro beach is an 18-minute car ride (30 by transit or bike—you can rent one from the hotel), and the Ria Formosa Nature Park with hiking trails and boating tours is right at your doorstep.

Rooms & Bathrooms

There are five room categories, ranging from Double or Twin rooms with either a pool view or a furnished balcony/patio to suites, some with a jetted tub, and all with a furnished balcony. Guest rooms are individually themed, tied to their Portuguese-related names, like the Ship Room or Lemon Room, and have access to a communal kitchen with a dishwasher, full-sized fridge, and an oven. En-suites are modern with basic toiletries, cozy bathrobes, and slippers. For the most room to stretch out, book yourself into one of the two Master suites for a jetted bathtub and spacious terrace.

Amenities

With spacious common areas that house a gas fireplace, a library, and plush seating (with tea and coffee available), Opus One does it's part to make you feel at home. There isn't a spa, but you can relax with a massage in your room. There's a billiard/pool table, a seasonal outdoor pool with seating you might have to show up early to secure, and an outdoor snack bar serving Portuguese fare (fruit, breads, cheeses) to guests under covered tables at the pool's edge. Wine tastings are also on offer, as are bikes on loan.

Family-Friendliness

Not a hotel with kids in mind, Opus One's rooms sleep two people (cribs aren't available) and may be an option for parents with older kids. There's an outdoor pool and a games room with a pool table, and its proximity to hiking trails and the beach is a perk for active families.
