Trenta is located just 13 miles (20 km) from Bovec in one of Slovenia’s most coveted regions: the Julian Alps. The journey between the two is most conveniently done by car—either rental or private transfer—and takes about 30 minutes.

Another option is the summer tourist bus, which also takes about 30 minutes and operates from late-June through August.

The two alpine towns are set along Vršič Pass, a historic and scenic roadway. Many visit this region just to enjoy the drive, which gives glimpses of snow-capped peaks and deep forest valleys. It's important to note, however, that this route is often closed in the winter months due to heavy snowfall.

By Rental Car or Private Transfer

Duration: 30 minutes

The most convenient way to reach Bovec from Trenta is by private transfer (or taxi), which can be booked either online or on-site.

Rental cars are a quick and convenient option as well, but they can't be booked in Trenta. So although it may be more convenient to have your own vehicle—to further explore the beauty of the Julian Alps and the Soča River Valley—you will need to rent it prior to arriving in Trenta.

The closest town to obtain a car is in Kranjska Gora, which is 16 miles (25 km) from Trenta. Rental cars can also be booked in many other cities in Slovenia, including the capital, Ljubljana. Keep in mind that Vršič Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass with many tight turns. It tends to close (either partially or completely) during the winter months due to heavy snowfall. You may also be required to use winter tires or chains. It's best to check road conditions before you make the journey.

There are a few pull-outs that offer picnic tables, scenic views of the Julian Alps, and/or trails for those seeking a day hike. Free maps of the park and hiking trails are available at the information center in Trenta.

By Bus

In the summertime, from late-June through August, it's possible to travel from Trenta to Bovec via the tourist bus. This route is operated by a private company and the journey will take about 30 minutes. There are about five departures per day, so it's possible to hop off for a day hike and catch the next bus a few hours later.

If you're looking for an adventure, there's also a 13-mile hiking route available. Starting from Trenta you follow the Soča Trail, which is a segment of the famous Alpe Adria Trail that stretches from Austria to Italy via Slovenia. This particular route—Trenta to Bovec—is considered Stage 24. The hike is filled with beautiful scenery: turquoise waters of the Soča River and views of the Julian Alps.

If you wish to tackle the route in two days, you can opt to spend a night in the alpine village of Soča along the way. Trail maps are available at the information center in Trenta, but kimkim's local experts in Slovenia are also happy to help you organize the logistics of your trip.
