Once in Costa Rica, Adrian was very responsive and adaptable when we needed to modify our itinerary on short notice. Totally accommodating. Our tour guides were excellent, especially Olman, who we had for our Manuel Antonio National Park tour. He knew all the ins and outs of spotting wild life. He is clearly an expert and had a very kind and patient demeanor and a passion for his work. Because he had a such a high-quality spotting scope we did not even need our binoculars. He was able to take expert quality pictures for us.

Hotel Reviews
Hotel La Mariposa
Manuel Antonio

The location was the best part. Most unbelievable views of the Pacific Ocean, the mountains and the beach. Indescribable. The front desk staff, however, or not the best. They seemed annoyed by questions and small requests. There were a few exceptions. For example, the upstairs bartender was very friendly, and one or two of the waiters were.

Authenticity & Character
Location
Unbelievable views and monkeys right outside your hotel room. And the hotel cat gets an A+.
Staff
The attitude of the staff at the reception desk. Most of the waiters and bartenders were friendly, except for one in particular, but the staff at the front desk were not very good with friendliness. They would seem annoyed by questions or requests.
Cleanliness & Comfort
We were put in what was clearly one of the older outdated rooms. The view was spectacular, but the hotel was cheap on things like toiletries and the electric outlets need to be updated. Charger chords wouldn’t even stay in them. They really need to update the older rooms.
The Royal Corin Thermal Water Spa & Resort - Adults Only
Fortuna

The thermal pools were awesome. Never crowded- no fighting for space or chairs. The hotel staff were sooooo wonderful. Eager to please and assist with anything; they all seemed genuinely appreciative of their guests being there. The breakfast buffet was like nothing you would find in the USA. Highest quality fruits and vegetables, cheeses, made to order omelettes, Costa Rican, coffee, as well as some American favorites, like bacon, eggs, and pancakes.

Authenticity & Character
The hot spring pools, hot tubs, saunas, and jungle feel of the place.
Location
A little too close to the busy road. While trying to listen to the sounds of nature the loud trucks passing by interfered a bit.
Staff
So attentive and eager to please.

Holden planned our trip with so many amazing experiences: Safari float down a river in the rainforest, night hike to see cool frogs, the most unusual snakes and a sloth, a cooking class, a hike in the Arenal Volcano area and hike through the Hanging Bridges. Our guide from Serendipity was a local named Mariono. He was amazing! Shared so much of what we were seeing on our hikes, the history, culture and so much fun. The logistics were smooth with no problems. What a great way to see a country and experience its treasures without wasting time on logistics of where to go or where to have dinner. Our hotels were fantastic. The Arenal Manoa Hotel hot spring pools were beautiful and fun to relax in. The lushness of the vegetation around our rooms were also unique and cozy. The Bosque del Mar hotel at Playa Hermosa was beautiful and right on the beach. Our drivers got us everywhere we needed to be on time. I am so impressed with the trip this team put together for us! Thank you!!!!

Our group of 4, thoroughly enjoyed our 10 day trip to Costa Rica. Holden did an excellent job helping us plan a memorable trip. He was always quick to respond to questions during the planning phase as well as during the trip itself. I can't say enough good things about how everything was organized from the drivers being on time, the tour guides being informative and fun to be around and the activities we participated in.
We flew into Liberia and were driven to La Fortuna. The driver was so kind and informative and provided us with bottled water and chips. He stopped in order for us to take photos of beautiful areas. We checked into the Arenal Manoa & Hot Springs Resort. The grounds and hot springs are exceptional. The rooms are ok. There is no chairs to sit in and it's a bit dated. The resort staff are welcoming and helpful. The breakfast buffet is huge and I appreciated the gluten free designated section.
We did the coffee, chocolate and sugar cane tour. The tastings were delicious and we learned a lot. Later, we had a guide, Mariano, give us a private tour of the Arenal Volcano and The La Fortuna Waterfall. The waterfall was beautiful even though we had to climb over 500 stairs each way. You are allowed to swim at the bottom by the waterfall but it is very rocky and would be hard to navigate your way to get into the water. Mariano did a great job on our Arenal Volcano hike and taught us a lot about the area. Mariano was also our guide for the Arenal Hanging Bridges Tour. It was fun and it's a very pretty area. Mariano was always on the look out for wildlife and even found some sloths and toucans for us to see. Mariano had a great sense of humor and we enjoyed his tours. One person in our group doesn't like heights so skipped the Hanging Bridges and went on a sloth tour. He loved it and got some amazing pictures.
We had a blast Whitewater Rafting and our guide Axel was great. It's exhilarating but be prepared to get wet which was part of the fun.
The boat ride and transfer to Monteverde was a beautiful way to see that area. It's a gorgeous area and our guide, Andy, was so informative and knowledgeable as he guided us through the cloud forest. The Cloud Forest Lodge was our favorite hotel. Everything was recently renovated. The rooms and bathroom are large and comfortable. The restaurant is delicious and has beautiful views. We saw some amazing birds during our stay there.
Upon arrival to the Wyndham Hotel in Tamarindo the lobby and views of the Pacific Ocean are stunning. The pool area and restaurant are very nice and also provide excellent views. The rooms were a bit run down and the bathroom incredibly small. The balcony however was great. While in Tamarindo we did a Wetlands Boat Tour. This was excellent and our first opportunity to see monkeys. The guide, Henry, did a wonderful job getting us as close as possible to see the wildlife. The beaches in Tamarindo are beautiful and we appreciated the free shuttle from the hotel to the beach and downtown area.
Overall the trip was excellent and we truly appreciated everything Holden, Nancy and Adrian did from KimKim and Serendipity Adventures. It was well planned and everything went great. I can't say enough positive things about everyone involved in planning a very memorable trip!

We appreciated the careful planning and arrangements for our trip to Costa Rica in January 2026. Arriving in Liberia - Guanacaste airport late because of flight delays, we found our driver after leaving the chaos of the airport and inefficient customs. Our driver brought us to Lomas Volcuna Hotel over twisty, bumpy roads late in the evening. Of all the arrangements, the only thing I would change was perhaps staying closer to the airport and taking the arduous trip the next morning. The hotel in Arenal surpassed all expectations. It was quiet, luxurious, and clean with the individual cottages. The landscaping lifted the senses and there was a trail in the woods for enjoyment. The North Fields chocolate and coffee experience informed us of all the complexity of these crops; the guide used excellent teaching methods to keep us engaged. The next day, our boat ride on the river found more wild life than any other adventure of the week. The guides spotted monkeys, sloths, caiman, iguana and several bird species. All week the guides had telescopes to see the animals and they outfitted our phone cameras for pictures. Our last day, we hiked up the side of Arenal; the climb was aduous for some of our party but the guide supported the members who needed help. The trip to Manuel Antonio was another long bumpy trip but the Mariposa Hotel destination was worth the drive. Great views, wonderful restaurant, infinity pool and capochin monkeys everywhere. Manuel Antonio park did not handle the crowds well, wildlife was distant, but the coast was beautiful. Back up the mountain to the cloud forest and Monteverde. The hotel, Fonda Vela, had a great pool, the best cooking of the trip and beautiful natural wood rooms. We traveled the hanging bridges which were very manageable even for our members who had difficulty hiking. Our night hike in the forest revealed the creature that come out after dark. Guides showed us toucans, other birds, a viper, and a frog. Seeing a frog made me realize that all the ecology and conservation in Costa Rica has at least saved this one little reptile. We just don't see frogs in the US like I did as a child. Kenny our driver brought us back down the mountain to Tamarindo bay. The resort had a gorgeous ocean front that we walks every morning at dawn to our extreme delight. The town and vendors could be overwhelming at times, but the evening shows with traveling Mariachi bands, jugglers and circus acts were entertaining. Photos of the week will be dear to us; a video of stills and video clips helps to recall the good times!

Hello Michael
I'm sorry you experienced inclement weather during your trip to Costa Rica. Of course we can't control the weather and the entire country was taken by surprise by an out of the ordinary cold front this high season. A positive attitude about the weather goes a long way when traveling 🌟

We even paid for your first night at the beach to try and move you to the coast early to beat the unfortunate weather 🌞

Thank you

4 of the 6 places we stayed were great but the first one in La Fortuna was only "OK" and the one we were first put into in Tamarindo was terrible and known by all locals to be unacceptable. Almost all of the tours we were booked for were very good but often the details we were given were totally wrong (3 hour plans were actually 5/6 hours in actuality). And one in Tamarindo did not even occur despite our wasting time because of messed up pickup due to our lousy location.

The itinerary that was planned for us enabled us to see three of the most interesting areas in Costa Rica - Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. All three hotels were luxurious and we used their restaurants and pools. All four drivers taking us between the airport and the three hotels were timely and efficient. The activities were strenuous for us older folks but we saw beautiful scenery, lush rain and cloud forests and all sorts of exciting spotting of animals and birds.
Bela led our first tour of hiking up Arenal Volcano and going down to the waterfall, with just one other couple. We had a private tour with Mariano to the Hanging Bridges near Arenal. We enjoyed the coffee and chocolate tour with Randy at Don Juan. Marvin guided us through the dark at the Children's Eternal Forest and showed us many nocturnal animals and birds. We walked around the Hanging Bridges on our own at the Selvatura Park and got a tour with a group of the Sloth, Butterfly and Reptile buildings. We had a very good private tour with Ivan at Manuel Antonio and got close-up views and pictures of sloths, monkeys and all kinds of other creatures through his long Zoom lens. The catamaran ride was very lively and fun, with dinner and dancing around the boat. Finally, Alex was very informative on our ride back to the airport.
There were only two minor inconveniences. We didn't get a note that the Hanging Bridges tour on Monday was changed from 8:00 to 10:00 but we found out when our concierge called the Serendipity Office. And our room (and apparently all the rooms) at the Sibu Lodge was much too chilly.

The breeze made the ride very comfortable on a hot and humid day. We had great views of the towns, beaches and islands and got to see a few dolphins when we went out a few miles. Then we stopped at a cove for swimming and snorkeling. One of us did a little swimming with a life jacket, while the other took pictures of videos of all the younger passengers jumping or sliding into the water. Then we had a very tasty dinner of beef and vegetables on a skewer, pasta and fruit.

The van that picked us and others up from various hotels had mostly young and very loud passengers. When we got to the marina, it was unclear for a while where we should go - and where we would be picked up at the end. But it was well-organized and we made it on the boat and back to our hotel.

It was very crowded, even at 8:00 in the morning - it took us 20 to 30 minutes just to get through the entrance to the Park. Ivan was an outstanding guide. He was able to identify many kinds of animals through his long Zoom lens and took pictures with our cameras through the view finder - so we have great photos of sloths, monkeys, crabs and many other forms of wildlife, along with palm trees. We stopped at the cafeteria a little over halfway through our walk and he got fruit and a fruit drink for us there. The best part was seeing close-up female monkeys carrying their babies on their backs through the trees near the beach.

Hola Mark,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review of your Costa Rica journey. It truly means a lot to me to read about your experience and to know that you enjoyed exploring Arenal, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio, as well as the hotels, guides, drivers, and activities along the way.

I’m especially happy to hear how much you enjoyed the guided experiences with Bela, Mariano, Randy, Marvin, Ivan, and Alex. Costa Rica’s nature and wildlife are incredibly special, and it’s wonderful to know that you were able to experience the rainforests, cloud forests, wildlife sightings, and scenery so fully—even with activities that can be a bit demanding. Your description truly captures the spirit of the trip.

Thank you as well for sharing the two minor inconveniences. I sincerely apologize for the lack of notification regarding the change in time for the Hanging Bridges tour. This is something I will review with our operations team to ensure clearer communication moving forward. Regarding the temperature at Sibu Lodge, I appreciate you mentioning this as well; your feedback is very valuable and helps us better guide future travelers, especially those sensitive to cooler temperatures.

It was truly a pleasure assisting you with the planning of this trip, and I’m very grateful for your trust in Serendipity Adventures. Thank you again for your kind words and for allowing me to be part of your Costa Rica experience.

I wish you all the very best and hope Costa Rica will welcome you back again in the future.

We (a pair of senior citizen siblings) told kimkim that we were interested in touring Costa Rica and that we liked hiking, wildlife, and local culture. They quickly came up with a two-week itinerary that included San Jose (1 day), Drake Bay (3 days), Manuel Antonio (3 days), Monteverde (3 days), Arenal/La Fortuna (3 days), which we traversed in a Suzuki Jimny during late January and early February. kimkim made all of the arrangements for accommodations, rental car, and daily tours. We just booked our flights and showed up. And were we glad we did!

All of the locations we visited were stunningly beautiful, and the balance between coast and mountains was just right for us, since both are terrific in Costa Rica. Our lodgings in the Hotel Rancho Corcovado in Drake Bay, the Karahe Beach Hotel in Manuel Antonio, the Camino Verde B&B in Monteverde, and the Hotel Arenal Lodge in Arenal were uniformly delightful. These 3-star establishments were all in convenient and interesting places, and all possessed distinctive character that made them part of the tour experience. We highly recommend them all.

In each location, we had day tours with various providers, all of whom were professional and friendly. The guides from Yemanya Expeditions in Drake Bay and Paddle 9 in Manuel Antonio were particularly knowledgeable. Both were exceptionally skilled at finding wildlife (in the sea and the forest) and helping us to view them with spotting scopes. We saw several species of monkeys, sloths, coatis, tapirs, perccaries, frogs, snakes, butterflies, spiders, dolphins, a rare silky anteater, and lots and lots of birds (including many different hummingbirds). Our excursions into Costa Rica's awesome national parks were more like walks than hikes, since one must move slowly to find animals. But we were able to exercise our zest for physical activity on a guided tour of El Tigre Waterfalls in Monteverde, where we hiked through forested hills past several striking waterfalls and then rode back up a steep hill to the entrance on horseback. For us, El Tigre was a high point among high points of our trip.

For the most part, we enjoyed driving ourselves around Costa Rica. The roads are narrower than in the U.S., and, because of the mountainous terrain, they twist and turn. But, outside the Osa Peninsula, most were paved and in decent condition. We found Costa Rican drivers to be courteous and responsible (except perhaps the motorcycle riders who tend to squeeze between cars with little room to spare). The roads on the Osa Peninsula into Drake Bay, however, were rough and steep. A 4-wheel-drive car, like the Jimny, is an absolute necessity. If you don't like off road driving, a better option might be to take the boat from Sierpe. But since we didn't do that, we can't say whether car or boat is better. What we can say is that snorkeling on Cano Island and wildlife watching in the Corcovada National Park make a visit to Drake Bay very worthwhile!

Overall, kimkim made visiting Costa Rica easy and fun for us. Our trip combined the freedom of self driving, which let us wander around on our own, with the structure and expertise of guided tours. An excellent mix and a wonderful vacation!

Hotel Reviews
Hilton Garden Inn, La Sabana
San José

Clean and comfortable place reasonably close to the airport. Included breakfast buffet was extensive and delicious. Perfect place for us to spend a night before embarking on our tour of Costa Rica.

Hotel Rancho Corcovado
Drake Bay, Puntarenas

Beautiful, if odd, hotel right on the beach of Drake Bay. Beds were comfortable. Room was clean. Balcony was beautiful with stunning views of the trees, flowers, sand, and water. Included breakfast was delicious. Dinners were also good, but it makes sense to check what's on the menu before signing up because they only serve one thing each evening. Room was unnecessarily huge - we weren't sure what all the empty space was for. And bedding consisted only of sheets, which may have been enough for their normal weather, but it was a little chilly due to the relative cold snap during our visit. Finally, the short drive from the road to the parking lot was so steep, loose, and potholed that it took every ounce of traction our 4WD could muster to get up it. Overall, a quirky but beautiful place.

Hotel Arenal Lodge
Fortuna

Fascinating place. Grounds are huge - we took two hikes around them and saw horses, birds, and beautiful views of the volcano. Rooms face the volcano and offer spectacular views if/when the clouds lift. The rooms and lodge are in reasonable condition and the food in the restaurant is good. But the grounds have odd structures (e.g., a wedding pavilion, stone pillars, a macadamia nut museum) that are in advanced stages of decay. Also the room lights seemed to be about 10 watts - it was hard to see anything at night. And the driveway is a steep, winding 2 km track that is only sometimes wide enough for two vehicles to pass. Definitely a curious place. But much more interesting place to stay than a generic hotel. We would gladly go back.

Karahé Beach Hotel
Manuel Antonio

Right next to the public beach in Manuel Antonio. Excellent food in restaurant. Clean and pleasant pool. Walking distance (less than a km down the beach) from grocery and souvenir stores. We loved our stay.

Camino Verde Bed & Breakfast

Small (20 rooms), friendly, well-located, and lots of quirky fun (check out the bottle chandelier in the hallway). Breakfast is delicious (best pancakes we've had in a very long while). And the staff go out of their way to be helpful. We had an absolutely first-rate experience!

Authenticity & Character
Atmosphere was low-key and fun. Staff were friendly and helpful. Guests were pleasant and polite (we all respected the "quiet after 9 pm" signs).
Location
Easy to get to and convenient parking across the street.
Staff
Very responsive to requests about towels and laundry. Helpful in finding things to see (they led us to a 360 lookout point that was absolutely amazing!).
Cleanliness & Comfort
Very clean. Nicest room we stayed in during our visit to Costa Rica.

Hiking on the volcano was highly enjoyable, although it would have been nicer if the clouds had lifted. But it is a rainforest after all, and rain it did. But the rain didn't dampen the EcoTermales experience, where the hot springs were pleasant and relaxing. And the buffet meal at EcoTermales included some of the best food we had in all of Costa Rica. Overall, this was a fitting capstone to a very fun visit to Costa Rica. Highly recommended!

El Tigre Waterfalls Excursion

Monteverde

Intermediate level hike over up-and-down terrain that passes through lush rainforest and past several spectacular waterfalls. Absolutely the best hike we took in Costa Rica. To top it off, we rode horses up the mountain to get back to the park building where we enjoyed a delicious Costa Rican casado for lunch! For us, this was the best tour among many excellent tours we experienced in Costa Rica.

Manuel Antonio National Park Nature Hike
Manuel Antonio National Park Nature Hike
Manuel Antonio

Beautiful national park, with amazing vegetation, delightful animals, and two lovely beaches (you can hike and swim in the same park!). Our guide, Roberto of Paddle 9, was outstanding. He spotted many animals (e.g., snakes and sloths) we would never have seen without him. And the capuchin monkeys put on a show by walking along side us as we finished our tour. Definitely a place worth visiting, especially with a qualified guide!

It was pretty rough the day we visited, so the boat ride and swimming were more difficult than normal. But the guides were skilled an knowledgeable. I'd rate the snorkeling a tad below that in the Galapagos or Caribbean, but still excellent. Definitely a reason to visit Drake Bay!

Corcovado National Park & Sirena Ranger Station Visit

Using a travel agency/booking guides to plan, organize and adjust our itinerary and logistics for our trip to Costa Rica was a huge departure from our usual do it yourself travel. It was a first for us actually. So we obviously had some fears and trepidations in how it would all work out. We needn't have worried. Everyone we dealt with was professional and quick to adjust our plans as needed. From early on there were changes that had to be made. Perhaps most notable though were the cancellation of two of our planned and paid for activities due to weather conditions. I am very pleased those were refunded in full. The rental car seemed a little sketchy as we neared our departure day as I was unable to find much information or reviews on them but Sun Valley Rentals turned out to be a pleasure to deal with and we especially liked the pick up and drop off right at the airport. No un-nerving shuttle to deal with. The only glitz was the rep was not waiting for us when we arrived and I ended up paying a local who could see I was searching for awhile for them to call Sun Valley for me. I take the blame here though as apparently he sent us a message via Watts App which we missed. Still, he wasn't there with a sign as planned.
You really listened to what we wanted in Costa Rica and picked two perfect lodgings for us based on those wishes. We really feel we had two vacations in Costa Rica thanks to the dramatic differences between our lodges in Monteverde and Guanacaste. We experienced all the experiences we asked for, when the weather cooperated. We experienced a tropical storm and winds, rain and heavy rain our first three days there. Thanks in part to your help, we were able to salvage much of what could have been a disaster. I suppose you could suggest that folks vacationing in the cloud forest may experience significantly harsher weather conditions than expected. We had temperatures in the upper 40's (F) and winds in excess of 70mph! We took it in stride and even had some good laughs with other good natured tourists as we all admitted we had been wearing all the clothes we brought with us for three days in a row now :)
Our favorite highlights of our trip were the el tigre waterfall, tree top dining and everything about Rio Perdido, especially the thermal river and the overall complete lack of crowding (we hiked to miles without seeing anyone) and incredible privacy of our lodging.
Our planner was Gustavo and Kate assisted us while in Costa Rica.

Río Perdido Hotel & Thermal River

exceeded our expectations in every way. Perhaps the nicest lodge we've stayed at overall. The bungalows are extremely private and designed so well I found myself photographing many features of them to perhaps implement some of those ideas in my own house someday. The outdoor shower, the lava exfoliating tiles on the floor, the copper trough bathroom sink. Just wonderful. Couldn't believe the privacy we had in everything we did. Had the thermal river to ourselves, the hiking paths to ourselves and even the restaurant almost to ourselves. So much so that I questioned if they were perhaps not very booked and was stunned to hear they were at 100%.

I’m very sorry about the airport delay, the hotel room issues, and any disconnect regarding expectations. That is not the experience we aim to deliver, and your comments are very valuable for us to improve.

Holden was very pleasant and responsive. The drivers we had were excellent and sometimes, they had to drive under very difficult conditions. Overall, however, Holden clearly did not understand what we were looking for in terms of activities. We wanted activity. The hanging bridge trip was fine but in between the bridges, it was a walk at a snail's pace, stopping every ten feet to look at a different spider. The float was fine but I had to argue back and forth to get it later than 7 am, when we would have to miss breakfast and when it was colder. The hike in Manuel Antonio was not a hike-it to was a boring crawl at a snail's pace to look mostly at frogs, spiders and orchids-I was told it was a private hike for the four of us-I explained to our guide that we did not want to stop every ten feet and wanted actually hike and he said that this was not an actual hike and no adjustments could be made. Truthfully, we were elbow to elbow with hundreds of people-how private was that! The sailing cruise was nice and the food was good but Holden did not make clear that it was with 40 or so other people-I thought it would be a much smaller, semi-private activity-but it was fine. The Royal Corin exceeded expectations-the staff could not have been lovelier-the rooms were spectacular-the spa was great and the food was above average. The Mariposa had a beautiful view. That said, the staff were indifferent and the room had the very bare minimum. Overall, except for the drivers, I'm sorry I didn't just use TripAdvisor

I've travelled to other Central and Latin American countries, and Costa Rica was by far the easiest and friendliest. All the moving parts of the trip that kim kim set up worked smoothly (except one that was quickly fixed).

Ride CR transportation was prompt, friendly and scenic. The drivers gave us multiple rest stop opportunities that we usually didn't take, and also pointed out sights and scenic/photo opportunities that we did take. The best ride was between Monteverde and Arenal on a somewhat stormy day that made for great views passing over the mountains and across the lake. The hugely time saving and beautiful option to cross the lake instead of driving around it was brilliant!

Accommodations at the Cloud Forest Lodge and the Arenal Manoa were comfortable and convenient in a way that was very appropriate for the location. Very friendly and helpful staff certainly helps, but the addition of monkeys and toucans in the trees around the hotels was a wonderful surprise. Our favorite moment in Arenal was when the woman checking us in asked if there was anything more she could do, and we jokingly said we were really hoping to see a sloth. She turned to a young staff member nearby and said "Kevin, can you please show them the sloth", so he walked us across the parking lot, gave us his binoculars, and pointed to the sloth moving through the tree twenty feet away. We also especially enjoyed the trails available at the Lodge in Monteverde. Both places had good restaurants with amazing views and plenty of dining options that highlighted Costa Rica (but also played American/British instrumental pop music covers, aka elevator music, that was distractingly un-Costa Rican). It wasn't on the itinerary, but the San Lucas Treetop Dining Experience in Monteverde was one of the most enjoyable meals we've ever had.

All of the guides were knowledgable and excited about their work, balancing detailed wildlife information with local history and culture. Surprisingly consistent considering there is no formal training. The guide at the Hanging Bridges in Arenal was pretty quiet, but that was a much more commercial venue and it was pouring rain most of the time. If we were doing it all again, we would ask for longer tours. Our last day there, the tour company had our reservation, but didn't put us on their operations schedule, so no one picked us up. Since everyone else had been so prompt, I called after about 10 minutes, and they quickly got a driver and guide out to us and added a trip to some nice hot springs to the tour. The important thing was the guide offered us the option to take a much longer trail than normal, and that was a more thorough and satisfying experience.

We certainly enjoyed the lower stress and workload of having kim kim take care of all the arrangements. We're looking forward to using your service again, especially for trips like this where the area is unfamiliar and there are a lot of moving parts. Thanks!

Beautiful living space. Bedrooms were spacious and living areas relaxing. We had fun using the pool table and pool area. Housekeeping was daily and always done well. Also able to have our clothes washed when needed. Andreas was the host for the house. He was very helpful with questions and helped to coordinate the chef who made dinner for us two nights. The location was close to grocery stores and were walkable distances. Also able to walk to nearby restaurants and small shops to look around in. We were picked up at the end of the driveway for our tours which made it so very easy for us. Local wildlife included monkeys and beautiful birds. The scarlet Macaws were my favorite.

White water rafting was the highlight of the trip for me. Orlando was the guide who talked with us on the ride in. It took an hour and a half to get the area on the river where the rafts could be launched. He shared many stories about the countryside, the people and the surrounding industry and farming. He kept us all entertained. David was the guide for the raft I was in. David made the trip so very fun and memorable. He was a good judge of our capabilities and would find fun areas to go over and get a good splash of water. We were able to get out of the raft and swim in a deeper area. Also go into a waterfall and splash around a bit. Mario, our driver, was also a gem. Not only was he a good driver, he had a beautiful snack set up for us when the trip ended. Mario also shared several local plants and their uses with us. The meal at the end of our trip was a buffet and was very good.

Charlotte and her team worked to execute this plan. In the end, we had 66 who wanted to join along.
The personal attention from landing until take-off was above and beyond. We had 2 buses and 4 outstanding bird guides that stayed with us along the way. They provided additional bird walks around the hotel and resort in the morning and afternoons. Additionally, Serendipity had staff members who set up snack stations, went ahead to ensure we had easy access to our events, and helped out wherever needed. When some members inquired about ziplining, the activity was added to our itinerary, and many took advantage of the addition. The first night we stayed at the Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belen by the San Jose airport. Then we headed out to the El Lugar resort, with a stop at the Las Paz Waterfalls for a few hours of animal exhibits and a scenic trail to see the waterfalls. The next days included a riverboat tour, a guided naturalist hike at La Selva Biological Station, a Cacao tour, a visit to the hanging bridges near Arenal Volcano, and a relaxing evening at the hot springs. Everyone raved about the quality of the trip. Thanks for everything!!!

El Lugar

El Lugar provided very comfortable accommodations for our group. There were minor issues, such as room allocation, but they were promptly addressed. Although the casitas were spread out (as described in their literature), the resort provided quick service via golf carts, picking up guests to get them around. They also anticipated when we would move to meals and kept the carts available outside the reception or dining area. Feeding 66 people 3 meals a day, buffet style, was challenging. The meals did get a bit repetitive, but they tried to change it up. The staff went above and beyond and provided dance lessons, free carriage rides around the resort, and a dancing horse send-off as we boarded the buses to say goodbye. It was a very pleasant stay.

Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belen

Our short stay at Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belen was well-received by most of the group. There were minor issues due to a long line at check-in, but they quickly resolved that by adding another agent. The grounds were beautiful and allowed us to stretch our legs after a long day of travel. We had a group dinner, and the service was quick and efficient. Overall, it was a good start to the trip.

Dear Karen,

Thank you so very much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful, detailed, and wonderful five-star review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. Reading your words truly touched our hearts.

It was an absolute honor for all of us at Serendipity Adventures to work with you and to welcome such an incredible group to Costa Rica. From the very beginning, your vision of creating a meaningful birding experience for your community inspired us deeply. We were delighted to help bring that vision to life—first for 50 travelers, and then proudly for a group of 66.

Costa Rica is not just where we work; it is our home. Sharing its extraordinary biodiversity, warm culture, and natural beauty—especially in a way that is comfortable, enriching, and personal for senior travelers—is something we are truly passionate about. Knowing that the care, attention, and teamwork from our guides, drivers, coordinators, and support staff made a positive difference from landing to take-off means more to us than words can express.

I will be sure to share your kind feedback with Charlotte, our birding guides, drivers, and the entire operations team. They will be incredibly proud to know that their extra bird walks, on-the-ground support, flexibility with added activities such as zip-lining, and attention to every detail helped create such a memorable journey.

Thank you again for your trust, your leadership, and for allowing us to be part of such a special experience. We hope Costa Rica will always hold a special place in your hearts, and we would be absolutely thrilled to welcome you and your community back anytime.

Please feel free to ask for me personally the next time you return to Costa Rica, or family or friends it would be a true honor to design another beautiful journey for you, exploring even more of our country’s amazing destinations.

With heartfelt thanks and pura vida always,
Thank you so much for this opportunity! Pura Vida !

We had a great time spending two weeks in Costa Rica

Highlights and best memories:

1. Frog night tour with Kendry our first night in country outside of La Fortuna.
2. Saw and heard 133 species of birds using Merlin ID app - highly recommend downloading the Costa Rica bird data
3. Saw 2- and 3-toed sloths, howler and squirrel monkeys, white-faced capuchins, coati mundi, agouti, squirrels, bats, peccaries and skunk! Also crocodiles (at Tarcolos), iguanas, lizards, venomous snakes, tarantulas, mango crabs and wonderful small hermit crabs in all sorts of seashells at Manuel Antonio beach,
4. Excellent and memorable dinner at San Lucas Treetops in Monteverde. Also enjoyed the farm to table cooking class outside Quepos with Caesar and Crystal and the foodie tour in San Jose with Andrea. Dinner at Sikwa in San Jose and food at Hotel Guachipelin were also memorable.
5. Covered rain forest, cloud forest and dry forest habitats at La Fortuna, Tenorio, La Finca Farm, Monteverde, Santa Elena, Rincon de la Vieja and Manuel Antonio with excellent guides Kendra, Melany, Olman, Fatima, Olivier & Corey.
6. Orchid garden and hummingbird feeders at Cloud Forest Lodge and the hummingbird gallery in Monteverde; butterfly gardens in San Jose (Spirogyra and National Museum), El Jardin Orotina (best place to see 100s of Morphos and it’s free), and Manuel Antonio.
7. National Museum, Jade Museum and Museum of Precolumbian Gold in San Jose
8. Seeing cloud forest canopy and epiphytes from a different perspective at Treetopia
9. Good choices of hotels overall with breakfast free and good dining options at almost all.
10. Good hike seeing waterfalls and hot springs on the grounds of Hotel Guachipelin with one of our favorite guides, Olivier. The Montezuma Oropendulas, Amazons and two different owls calling at night there were also memorable
11. The chocolate, sugar cane and coffee tour at Don Juan’s was much more informative and fun than I was expecting. Seeing the cacao beans during fermentation and tasting them before and after roasting was really instructive. If you’re lucky, they will prepare some Mayan Xochol for you to drink with freshly ground beans. Sampling fresh frogwater after squeezing one’s own sugar cane was also great fun.

Disappointing or not as enjoyable or memorable:

1. Overall, the fauna in the Cloud Forest (Monteverde, Tenorio, Santa Elena & Tretopia) was more disappointing and/or elusive than in other areas. Not sure if this was because of the time of year or our guides.
2. Snorkeling trip to Isla del Canos. The drive and boat trip took >2 hours each way and the snorkeling was not that much better than we could experience with less effort in Hawaii. Also, 1.5 hours in the water was quite tiring.
3. Not enough time to explore Papagayo beaches. Not sure that going to the coast from Rincon de la Vieja and then going back inland for a long round trip to Tenorio was the best planning.
4. Los Lagos Resort in La Fortuna was the hotel at the bottom of our list: too touristy, tired rooms and poor food. Birds on site and landscaping were good though. I think we would have enjoyed a smaller boutique hotel in town.
5. Lots of driving! Next time, we’ll stay in fewer places and drive less
6. It was REALLY, REALLY wet in La Fortuna. Not KimKim’s fault, of course!

Hike through Tenorio National Park with great views of Arenal volcano and great cloud forest vegetation. Wildlife was a bit sparse however, and there was a very long wait with lots of people to see the waterfall, because of a landslide Finca Verde Nature Farm was excellent and we got to see a couple of sloths on the move as well some great birds.

Rincón de la Vieja

We hiked for several hours with a very pleasant young man called Olivier who was knowledgeable about the flora, fauna and geography of the area. Saw howler monkeys and white faced capuchin and some great birds. Saw three waterfalls which were each spectacular. The first two we had completely to ourselves. The last one had a great swimming hole but there were quite a few people. It was nice to relax in the hot spring pools at the end after the hike, but they were also quite crowded. Beware: the no-see-um bugs in the parking lot were the most vicious bugs we encountered during the whole trip. The bites stayed with us for 2 weeks.

Olivier was very knowledgeable, polite and pleasant. After talking with others, we realized how lucky we were to get private transport between the Oropendula waterfall and the hot springs.

Very wet hike. Saw bedraggled specimens of both 2- and 3-toed sloths high up in trees, but they were huddled up and not moving much. It’s good sloth habitat. Also saw a BoatBilled Heron who was rather splendid. Good coffee at the place they took us after the hike and it was great watching birds eat plantain pieces while staying dry!

Boat Billed Heron.
