Rene did a very good job planning our trip. He listened to the things we wanted to do, and planned accordingly. The team member we most appreciated was Ibis Murillo from Rutopia who really handled the day to day details of our trip. We wanted to make a change to a planned day to incorporate a trip to Cañada de la Virgen. No problem. One hotel had no power when we arrived and we thought we would have to change hotels. Ibis was on top of it and coordinated with the hotel to find is another room, just in case. Power was restored and we remained in an upgraded room at Hotel Madero.

Any questions we had were answered promptly. That alone made us feel like the team was there to solve anything. This was our first trip to Mexico and it gave us wonderful assurance to have Ibis, Rutopia, and Kimkim taking care of us.

We had the right amount of time on our own and the right amount of planned activities. We had 2 wonderful guides in San Miguel de Allende, and Guanajuato. The guide in Queretaro was not the same level of professionalism as the first two. The only difficult incident during our trip was the guide in Queretaro not being willing to pay for a lunch that our documents clearly said was included. Not only did I end up buying our lunch, but his too. Perhaps I should have complained more but I really didn’t want to fight about it with the guide. I submitted the receipt to Ibis and was assured we would be refunded.

Despite a couple of little hiccups along the way, the experience was grand and we would use Kimkim and the team at Rutopia again.

We nearly moved from this hotel because of power problems . We are so glad we stayed and trusted they would have it fixed by the time they said it would be fixed. It occurred as they said but they still upgraded our room because of the potential problem. The location was excellent, the room was large and comfortable. A wonderful stay! The staff explained the problem well and solved the issue very professionally.

This hotel was very nice and quite close to centro Guanajuato. The room was a bit small but it had all the amenities we needed. I must mention however, that a nearby nightclub kept us awake until thankfully @ 2 am they stopped the music. Now, for those that love the nightlife, this hotel would be perfect!

Wonderful location and the staff were extremely helpful. The room was large, clean, and had all the amenities we needed. The hotel itself was mere steps away from the pedestrian only plaza at La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. There were 31 stair steps to our room but staff carried our luggage up and retrieved it when we checked out. Other trips up and down were good exercise! A very delightful stay/

The trip was enjoyable. The guides were ok, could have been better. Best guide was from Merida. We forgot a small bag in the car while travelling from Merida to Tulum. When checking if they could send this back with another tourist car, they quoted an exorbitant amount of 9000 pesos.

The experiences we selected with the help of our specialist, Diego, provided more authentic and educational activities than we would have chosen on our own. And when we needed to add activities at the last minute, our support specialist, Luz, was quick to help us make the necessary adjustments. Each day was organized for us, with maps, meeting points, and WhatsApp phone numbers, which made it so easy for our family of 6 to be in the right place at the right time.

7 Cenotes, 4 Mayan ruins, countless monkey sightings, 4 distinct towns on the Peninsula, and over 1200 miles driven with very few challenges-all due to the work of the Rutopia team...thank you!

Hacienda Morelos
Puerto Morelos

Great location, but the rooms are old and have limited amenities. It's clear the hotel can stay busy based on its location right in downtown Puerto Morelos, so they don't work to provide a reasonable experience for their guests. Our rooms opened into a staff parking lot, where staff were cleaning chairs-not a great first impression. We had credit cards and cash stolen from our room, which the hotel reimbursed us for...but it certainly soured the close of our trip.

The communication with KimKim was fantastic throughout our planning process. Once the trip started, a more local agent was assigned to us and checked in daily through WhatsApp to provide details for the next day. We had an incident where money and credit cards were stolen at one of the hotels and Rutopia/KimKim acted swiftly and professionally, dealing with the hotel management to ensure we were compensated. We were hesitant at first to pay for a travel agent vs. planning ourselves, but in the end, we were so glad we opted for using the agency because it was so nice having someone confirming all the logistics/details for our trip every day and having an advocate for the theft incident. Also, the excursions planned with the local Mayan community were fantastic. We were thrilled to be supporting local businesses in their eco-tourism ventures - it was exactly what we were looking for. They provided access we wouldn't otherwise have had and it was all very seamless. My only complaint is that it was very hard to get official/legal documentation of (e.g. contract language) before we made our final payment. We were unclear who we were actually paying (KimKim or Rutopia) - who was the legal entity and what recourse did we have if they didn't follow-through with services? We wanted to see that language in a document before making our final payment, which wasn't offered initially. It's difficult to pay a substantial amount of money (for us, a family of 6) without having a legal document to review first. Online reviews were very positive though and now that our trip is over, I would 100% recommend this company and would use them again without hesitation for future trips.

Experience included a couple hour boat-ride through several massive lagoons. Scenery was gorgeous, great for bird-watchers. Our favorite was the 30 minute float through the "lazy river" (canal). Our favorite activity of the whole trip! It was beautiful, peaceful, crystal clear water. The guides were informative about the reserve. I was hoping to see a little more wildlife but mid-day, the most you will likely see are birds. My family of 6 from the US (with 4 teens/young adults) absolutely loved it.

We’re truly happy to hear that you had a wonderful experience overall, and we’re so grateful you took the time to share your thoughts with us. Your feedback means a lot, and we always welcome the opportunity to improve and grow.

We’re sorry to hear that your impression of the pricing impacted the overall feeling of your journey. We completely understand where you're coming from. At Kimkim, the goal is to create a space where travelers can easily connect with trusted local experts—and at Rutopía, we’re passionate about turning that connection into unforgettable, one-of-a-kind travel experiences.

Behind each trip, there’s a dedicated team of local professionals who pour their knowledge, care, and time into designing something truly special. We genuinely love doing this, but to keep creating these meaningful experiences and supporting communities across Mexico, we also need to be able to generate an income from it—so we can continue doing this work with the same heart and dedication.

Of course, traveling independently can be a more economical option for some, and we absolutely respect that. Still, many of our travelers choose us to save time, avoid stress, and enjoy authentic experiences that are hard to find on their own. Our goal is always to provide not just a trip, but peace of mind, local insight, and something truly enriching.

That said, we’re so glad your journey went smoothly and without any major hiccups—that’s always one of our top priorities. Once again, thank you for your honesty, we will continue improving how we share the full value of what we offer.

We’d love to welcome you back to Mexico one day—there’s still so much beauty to discover, and we’d be thrilled to help you explore it again.

Nice rooms, balconies with great views of the ocean. Private pool that never felt crowded as there really aren't that many guests. Great breakfasts delivered to your door when you want. No bar or restaurant on site, but if you are on the beach bar tenders come over and deliver you drinks. Massage therapy people come by too. Awesome experience! We almost cancelled this because my family was kind of burnt out from Chichen Itza and Ek Balaam the days before. Worried the bike ride might be hot and miserable. Instead the bike ride was super fun, honestly the bike ride was probably the best I have ever been on and that is saying something. It is flat and shady and not very far. The ruins are different from the other two. Very laid back here compared to Chichen Itza. Very fun!

The boat ride, especially through the canal area was super fun plus you see a lot of fish and birds. Floating down the canal is super relaxing and a unique experience. My oldest kid could do it every day of his life. You see Mayan ruins here and there. We saw manatees, which was amazing, interesting fish close up, ospreys, herons it is just a beautiful place. Kids loved it 10 out of 10 until my 12 year old lost his cell phone on an island we went to. It was all his fault, but the guides tried their best to find it in multiple ways and worked hard to console him. So any negatives to the trip was just our family being us. Awesome trip.

The activities and accommodations were aligned with the objectives and preferences we had in mind for the trip. We wanted to do things "off the beaten path," and that's what Charlotte delivered. Highlights included swimming in the cenote, Sian Ka'an boat tour (highly recommended), and snorkeling with sea turtles. The team also supported us during the trip and were quick to answer questions when they arose.

Luz, who was our point of contact during our trip, was wonderful to work with and very attentive. She was checking on us to make sure everything was going smoothly and we were having a great time even on the days when we didn't have any activities planned. She got us everything we needed for our activities ahead of time and was able to help us cancel an activity fairly last minute when we had a physical issue that prevented us from doing the activity. I loved that we were able to curate a day trip that included both Chichen Itza and Ek Balam, as we couldn't find any private tours elsewhere that combined these two experiences. Ek Balam was an absolutely magical experience for us - so beautiful, secluded and QUIET with so few other travelers. It really let us experience the site and its energy so much more thoroughly and I am beyond glad that this experience was included with our tour. All of our drivers were prompt and professional and we never once worried about any of the details of our trip because we knew our Kimkim team had our backs. Thank you for helping us plan this wonderful trip!

Mi Amor Hotel was the perfect place for us to stay in Tulum. Being inside the national park, it allowed us to escape the hustle and bustle of the more touristy area of Tulum and be more secluded in the natural beauty of the coastline. It was also nice to have their sister hotel, Mezzanine, just a super short walk down the road so we could experience the beach and restaurant there as well. The small size of the resort made it feel so quiet and intimate. The views from the rooms and property were beyond compare. Our room was always clean and comfortable. The staff went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. Everyone from the front desk to housekeeping, maintenance and restaurant staff remembered us each day, greeted us warmly, helped us with anything we needed (recommendations, directions, hotel info and even loaning us a pair of sunglasses when we realized my husband forgot his!) and were genuinely kind and wonderful to interact with each day. When I think back on our time here, I instantly feel happy and relaxed, because that is how we felt during our entire stay thanks to everything Mi Amor Hotel had to offer.

It was just easy and convenient to have someone pick us up from the airport on our first day in a new place.

Our first day City & Food tour with Montserrat was AMAZING. She did a fabulous job of chatting with our teenager in Spanish, adjusting the tour to our own interests, bathroom needs, and hunger levels, and engaging all of us in an introduction to some of the history and the current life of Mexico City. 6 stars out of 5 for this guide and experience.

Our 2nd day tour was where our trip fell off of the rails.
We had booked a nature-oriented introduction to the canals of Xocimilco, according to our trip plan. But what we got was a trip to the party-boat side, and then the tour guide had nothing to offer - no stops, no chatter about what we were seeing, no food & drink. I would not recommend working with that guide or that company. And it was VERY frustrating, since our tour plan had described a different tour. (It sounds like Rene had switched the tour / tour company but hadn't updated the itinerary - but we never would have booked that experience if it was described accurately.)

But then we had a great experience on our bike tour of Teotihuacan. The guiding company did a nice job of mixing the biking with walks around different areas, and the guide was engaging for our whole family (parents and 2 teen boys).

Also throughout, Luz was our day to day contact, and she always made sure that we knew where to go next and how to find our guides, etc.
She wasn't able to help with anything to address our mis-booking of our 2nd day tour, but where she did seem to have accountability she did a nice job of communicating.

Hacienda Morelos
Puerto Morelos

As of February 2025, the only reason to be at hacienda Morelos is the location. It is located right in the center of Puerto Morelos, with direct access to the beach and with sea view of most rooms. The rest however, is in grave need of attention. There is a feeling in the hotel that there is no management, the employees where often uncourteous and lacked initiative. There are renovations going on in the restaurant, so you are walking in a building site and to reach the pool and sea you have to go through all the kitchen equipment left in what would be otherwise a nice restaurant area. We constantly had to request extra towels and toilet paper for our 4 people room, like it was not possible to give anything extra. The coffee in the foyer was alway empty, in a container way too small for the demand. The pool and other part of the hotel cleanliness is questionable. The fee parking was half a building site, we were blocked in by a van at one point. They should have closed during the remodel and train their staff better.

To my delight, Lupita was my guide for this day’s experiences. It was a day full of unique experiences; we visited 2 of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos, Zácatlan and Chignahuapan, and hiked to a waterfall Cascadas San Joaquin Tomatlán. Zácatlan is a town bejeweled with beautiful and intricate mosaic murals which depict the history of the town, early Mexican history/mythology, and things of cultural interest such as typical clothing from each state of Mexico. To add to the value and interest of this excursion, the actual artists were working as we toured and spoke with us about their work! The hike to the waterfall took place through a cool refreshing mountainous area, and the local guide discussed the indigenous plants of medicinal value. During this tour I sampled some local delicacies such as bread stuffed with an entire apple, elote and a maguey worm (actually very tasty and a good source of protein, no kidding).

Quality of Experience
I loved the opportunity to visit Pueblos Mágicos, places which are not necessarily on the tourist route for folks from the US. Also, it was truly priceless to be able to see the dedication of the mural artists at work, and to meet those amazing women. My memories from this tour will always be cherished.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
As noted before, Lupita is a fantastic guide and I was happy to have her in charge again. I cannot say enough good things about her. She is indefatigable, kind, personable, and a gifted teacher. She was always careful of my welfare, and asked if I was tired or if anything was too much for me. Our driver Miguel is also a very kind man and an excellent, safe driver.

This class was very well-organized and incredibly fun. I was the only tourist in this activity, which added to the experience since I felt like I was really able to participate in the cooking. However I think that a larger group would be great as well.

Quality of Experience
In contrast to previous cooking classes that I have taken in other places, I feel that I will really be able to possibly make mole myself after I return home. We also visited a local market where I had the experience of shopping for some of the ingredients we used later. We sampled a sweet breakfast tamale at the very beginning of the experience, just enough to keep me from getting ravenous before the mole was ready!
Food

We visited a famous Talavera factory, Talavera de la Reyna, on the way to Cholula. The tour was fascinating, and included a thorough explanation of the process of producing the ceramics. We then proceeded to Cholula, where the guide discussed the largest pyramid in the world, located there. We visited the museum and walked around the pyramid, viewing the excavations of previous pyramids. We then climbed to the top to see the famous church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. Additionally we visited Templo de Santa María Tonantzintla and La Purisima in San Andres Cholula.

Quality of Experience

Pablo was very informative, explaining the significance of the pyramid as well as the cultural significance of the different styles of decor in the churches. His commentary on the exhibits in the museum was invaluable.

While we were in the street of dulces, she pointed out the former home of the Serdán family, which continues to display bullet holes from the start of the Mexican Revolution on its facade.

Thank you so much, Smita! Not only did you experience my country in the best possible way with us, but you also contributed to the regeneration of our culture and environment through responsible tourism. I look forward to planning our next adventure under the Mexican sky—what about exploring Chiapas and the Lacandona Jungle?

Best regards to you and Aryana. Thank you for your trust.
¡Gracias, Smita, y hasta la próxima aventura!
