First time users who highly recommend Kim Kim! We took a complete flier on this with no personal recommendations and just a little bit of research and we feel like we hit the jackpot! Started right off the bat with planning the trip with Johannna - a US based Peruvian native who learned about our family needs and likes and matched it to her knowledge of the country to work with us to plan a vacation that perfectly suited us. Then then the local travel company, CusiTravel, was incredibly attentive to any small thing that arose - they answered the phone immediately, knew who i was, wanted to ensure we were having a good time and worked to make any adjustments we requested. Our local guide, Edwin, was exceptional and our driver, David, was terrific. Edwin really made our trip special - his native Quechuan language and history and pride in his country was infectious. He was deeply knowledgeable, attentive to all of our likes/dislikes/interests and tailored the tours and days around it. And he was unflappable when we had forgotten some passports back in Cusco. Easy going, nothing ever a problem. we enjoyed sharing some meals with him and learning a bit more about him and his family. The tours and sites we planned were perfect, the hotels and restaurants for the most part were great and what could have been a very complicated trip with different hotels/transports/connections/permits was all seamless to us. Not a care in the world! We will use KimKim again for our more complicated/adventurous trips and can't recommend them enough!

The hotel was fine. located all the way at the top of the hill so quite a hike up but near the thermal pools which was convenient. and a bit quieter up there. The hotel was very basic. could be a little more updated and more comfort. breakfast was basic. rooms were average. would opt for a different hotel with upgraded rooms and amenities in agua calientes.

this was an amazing resort in an extremely remote location. The accommodations were special and lovely. we had a warm and personal greeting and reception with a pisco punch when we arrived that really set a nice mood of specialized comfort. the main restaurant/bar etc was absolutely beautiful. the food was average. we unfortunately had a later-than-expected arrival so we missed truly taking advantage of the whole resort. the spa/sauna was already booked when we got there which my adult kids were looking forward to. We left at the crack of pre-dawn for machu picchu so missed really enjoying the place. Got a great view of the milky way before we put our heads down! and we had a lovely boxed breakfast waiting for us to take on our early early train. Lovely service and lovely resort. spend more time there. FYI Ollantaytambo looks VERY touristy and almost honky tonky.

a bit more of a budget hotel but good location. we stayed, left to sacred valley, and stayed on our way back. first room was small and incredibly noisy all night on the plaza. the second time we had a much bigger room in the back of the hotel and much less noisy. The breakfast oddly on the top floor was good, basic. the bellhops/porters and cleaning staff and breakfast staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. oddly the front desk staff was less so. they did not go out of their way to be helpful but were fine. the location is great and central. and they do a great job of taking care of your bags while you're in between coming/going. Might have looked for a bit more luxury but great location and served our needs at a great price.

We did Circuit 3 i believe and it was extensive! we got a great view of how MP worked as a city and educational and cultural center. Again Edwin was an amazing guide loaded with even more insights and facts and history. He made MP come alive. Edwin met us early in the morning at a time we all agreed upon - the hotel did a great job of getting our bags to the train later. Edwin knew to hurry is to the very long, waiting morning bus line - went up by bus (made us appreciate how special the hike was the day before) and came down by bus. had lunch in town with Edwin before catching the train to Ollantaytambo where David was waiting with the rest of our luggage and the van back to Cusco. Again would NOT have wanted to manage logistics on this trip without KimKim/Cusi Travel. Made it absolutely stress free and delightful.

My family of adult kids were ready for this from the get go. My husband (2 total knees) was upbeat and optimistic. Me, with an 8 month old total knee was optimistic but nervous - would i make it? would i hold everyone back? could i still do this at 62? well the answer was a resounding SO GLAD WE DID IT! not for the faint of heart for sure but you don't need to be an endurance athlete to make it. And there's something special about CLIMBING your way to Macchu Picchu. It was challenging for sure but the views are great and making it to the spectacular but less visited Winya Wayna ruins made it all worth it. Breathtaking! And coming through the Sun Gate and seeing MP from on high was also a real treat. It was long, the steps are hard, listen to your guide and when he tells you to pack and carry 3 liters of water - do it! we started the day on a very early train - lovely ride - a boxed breakfast from the hotel and a little pre-hike snooze. was so glad we had Kim Kim book everything ahead - transport, train, hiking permits. would not have wanted to arrange everything myself. Edwin made sure we got everywhere we needed to be. Again, Edwin was an amazing guide and, on this trip, cheerleader! He never peeped when i needed to stop and catch my breath. he never pushed, only encouraged and distracted with interesting asides about local flora and fauna and history. The team packed a phenomenal travel lunch for us that was enormous and delicious! And Edwin made it a point to take lots of picture for us, even when we were wondering if we'd make it. So glad we did it and proud that we accomplished it. The target is 6-8 hours, we took 7.5, my kids could have done it in 5.

Without a doubt one of the highlights of our trip. Everything we put into the itinerary was spectacular and we had a nice mix of Incan sites, markets, llama and alpaca "farms", textile demonstrations (not touristy, felt authentic, spent time with wonderful and interesting local weavers) and lunch in the middle of nowhere in a gorgeous eco-restaurant with amazing vistas and llamas and alpacas to visit with freely roaming the place. The salt mines and moray were our favorites and not to be missed. And extra kudos to Edwin and David who were cool, calm and collected when we realized we had left passports in Cusco and had to retrieve them. They made up the time and we still got to pack everything in without a worry. They could not have been nicer.

We had the extreme pleasure of having Edwin as our guide from Cusi Travel. He is a proud Quechuan who loves his history and culture and language and added so much to our trip. The half day tour was great after we had already spent a day in Cusco and found the market and some restaurants and some shops. he delved into some of the more notable historic sites in town and then we went just outside town to some near by ruins where we started to get immersed in the Incan culture. Edwin is informative and goes at the right pace. He is knowledgeable and was great connecting the dots for some of my family who had done some studying on the Incas in preparation for our trip. He was kind in letting us practice our spanish and filling in some gaps. A great afternoon!

Fantastic intro to the city and to Peruvian foodie culture. We had Amy who was SPECTACULAR! loads of energy, attentive to everyone, loaded with history and current events in Peru. The places they took us were each so different from the lucuma milkshake shack to the market with a box of fresh produce to Limana Bar which was a fantastic high end restaurant to the restaurant inside the ruins - it was top notch and interesting and FUN! We are pretty last minute with our planning and we weren't even sure there was time to pull a decent vacation in Peru together but Io, our kimkim specialist, was fantastic! She put together a great itinerary for our family of five, including plenty of history and cultural experiences, local sightseeing, as well as adventure. We had enough free time which was important as some of the family needed time adapting to the altitude in Cusco. We didn't have a list of must-sees and we simply trusted her recommendations and we are glad we did. Our day in Pisac and Ollantaytambo was unexpected and fascinating and one of the best! Adriel, our guide, was incredibly knowledgable and passionate about it all and we all swore we lucked out with the best guide! Of course Machu Picchu was a wonder to see and we were grateful for the guide, Rosa, who met us as soon as we disembarked the train and rushed us to the bus to head up to it. We would have never been able to figure that out and get there on time without her swift and urgent guidance! Another highlight was the Via Ferrate Climbing and Ziplining in the Sacred Valley. Our family has ziplined in some pretty amazing countries but the climbing up portion of this experience was new and exhilarating! We agreed this was the best day and our two guides, Brian and (forget his name) as well as Karla who took our photos, were outstanding! Additionally, all the hotels were even better than expected, with online photos not doing them justice. They were all in great locations, easy to explore on our own and walk to markets, coffee shops, restaurants, etc but also clean and comfortable. Have to give a huge shout out to Sonesta Posadas del Inca Yucay, our hotel in the Sacred Valley. This place was so stunning. There aren't words for how enamored we were with this place. Photos don't begin to show the beauty of this place. My husband wanted to cancel the rest of the trip and stay here! But honestly, it was sort of an oasis in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere but it had everything we needed and was just very unique. We also took a cooking class the last day and honestly, while we all like to cook, no one was sure what to expect. I can't locate the name of the place but it was a 3-hour full immersion cooking class in the heart of Cusco and Chef Fernando taught us so much about local cuisine and ingredients, provided samples of several things as well as walking us through making a couple of delicious and beautiful dishes. He was an entertaining and fun and there was so much food! The people in Peru were lovely, the food was all pretty great, the hotels were better than expected and there was the perfect mix of planned and free time for our family. Lisbeth, at Andean Travel, who was our local contact, was responsive and helpful when the altitude affected our plans one morning and all the guides and drivers we had in every city were great. kimkim delivered for us once again!

Location was great! The plaza was up the road a few blocks and it was very walkable to all things we wanted to do and see there. The rooms were clean and comfortable. They had the tea in the lobby and O2 for those struggling with the altitude. I will say it was pretty cold in the lobby, hallways and rooms. Rooms did have portable heaters though so we were warm enough when sleeping. Staff was very nice but as we don't speak great Spanish, communication was sometimes a little tricky for us. There was a great breakfast spread but we preferred the coffee from the little cafe next door. Overall, it was a great place. We stayed there three nights, two night then left for two days and then came back there for our last night.

Lovely hotel and very accommodating staff. Centrally located. Great breakfast spread. Beautiful appointments. The only reason we didn’t give it five stars was because our room was one of the ones overlooking the reception area and so all the noise from there traveled up to our room. People coming in late or staying up to drink and meet with friends, all that noise went straight into our room. Apart from that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Maybe noise canceling windows could be a suggestion?

The hotel was located essentially in a train station. The views of the mountains some of which seemed close enough to touch and then the snow capped peaks in the distance were simply magnificent. We enjoyed the flora in and around the hotel, and totally appreciated their excellent attempts at protecting the environment, growing their own organic and ecologically friendly produce, as well as fostering sustainability. The food was delicious, and the staff everywhere was excellent and very accommodating. The only fly in the ointment were the fumes from the trains. It was supremely convenient to have the trains stop there, but their fumes remained in the air for a while. Nothing that the hotel can control, but the only fly in the ointment as it were. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at El Albergue, and would recommend it to family and friends despite the caveat mentioned above.

At Tipon, we managed to get there before the hordes, and found it amazingly quiet and calming. The fountains flowed behind us while we looked at the mountains in front of us. Again the Incas hydraulic prowess was once again on full display. The four fountains expelled water at exactly the same rate. At another point, the force of the water coming from higher elevations was mitigated by the placement of a stone at exactly the right height. Piquillacta … the visit to this Wari walled city was different from the first site. In direct contrast with the peace and calm of the first site, this site was more oppressive due to its emphasis on protection and its multiple layers of walls, some of which were quite high. Andahuaylillas was a lovely Andean Baroque church and the insertion of Arabic influence in the decoration of the ceiling was illuminating.

The Argentina portion of our trip had a couple of mishaps with booking Montevideo (instead of Colonia) which was fixed last minute ($200 extra cost), and the San Telmo grill tour was just a lunch in Palermo (but the agency made it up to us with an excellent dinner in Cuzco!).

Every single driver on our entire trip was excellent. Every time the driver was early to pick us up, had a very comfortable van, and drove well. This is huge when you are in a foreign country and the roads/traffic are insane.

We had a very unfortunate case of food poisoning and our local guide Lisbeth did an amazing job of helping us when we needed her most. Thank you Lisbeth! Thank you Io!

Holiday Inn Lima Airport
Lima

While the hotel was great, the shuttle was infrequent and left us on the curb for over 30 minutes before arriving and having no space for us. So rather than wait another 30 minutes we took a cab... that was a huge bummer for a place touting convenience. There were no adjoining rooms and we had to get two rooms- so we would have rather stayed at the Wyndham which was on site and walkable from the airport.

This hotel was well located and nice staff. It was a fine place to land after a day of travel - served its purpose. The breakfast was meh and it felt dated. Noticed some rooms with no windows. It was also very loud.

Our family (2 adults, 2 children - 8 & 10 years old) just returned from one AMAZING two-week trip to Peru! Our local specialist, Jimena, understood right from the start the sort of trip our family was looking for and made the planning process extremely easy. She made all of the arrangements for us to see everything we had on our wish list, but also included many stops and sites along the way that we didn't even know about but made the trip all the more special. Upon arrival in Lima, we were greeted by Bosco (at like 2:00 in the morning!) who was exceptionally friendly got us to our hotel and ensured an easy check-in. While we had some free time in Lima, we took a food tour that was arranged by KimKim through the Barranco neighborhood that was exceptional. After Bosco got us back to the airport a couple of days later, we were then greeted in Cusco by our private guide Guido and driver, Alan. I cannot say enough good things about these two gentlemen. Guido has been leading tours in the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu for many years, and his deep knowledge and easy manner enriched each of the six days we spent with him. I even ended up needing to go to a clinic one day because of food poisoning and Guido and Alan stayed with me and ensured I got the meds I needed and got back to the hotel, even though it extended their day by a lot. I'm forever grateful them, and our entire time in Cusco/Sacred Valley was so much richer than I expected it to be because of them. After our time in the Cusco area, we headed back to Lima where we met with Bosco again. He traveled with us from Lima to Paracas and while he wasn't leading our tours, it was reassuring to know he was nearby if we needed anything at all. Our tours of the Ballestas Islands, Paracas Nature Reserve, and overflight of Nazca lines were fantastic. I highly, highly recommend any and all parts of this trip to others. It was truly a trip of a lifetime and one that our family will remember forever. Many, many thanks to the entire team who made this happen!

There were two tour guides that stood out as exceptional - Raul in Colca/Chivay and Elizabeth in Machu Picchu. The only down side was with some of the hotels booked for us. The Terra Viva in Cusco is a wonderful place with great staff and perfectly located. We wished we could stay at that chain in the other places we visited. The “not-so-good” hotel was Conde de Lemos in Arequipa (would not recommend it to anyone!). The other issue was with planning our last two days in Arequipa - we didn’t find those days worthwhile and probably should have just gone home after Colca - it would have been helpful to get advice about the area to know that there wasn’t really anything in Arequipa that we were interested in.

Hotel Reviews
Conde de Lemos
Arequipa

Would not recommend at all. Windows don’t close so you hear street noise all the time. Bathroom was incredibly small and you had to sit sideways on the toilet. They gave us a small packet of shampoo which were very tacky. They need to install the refillable soap/shampoo containers that most hotels had. They are going through a remodel so maybe these issues will change. No elevator and confusing signs on the second floor so you couldn’t find your room.

Authenticity & Character
Nothing special at all. Maybe it was the remodel but everything seemed like a 2-star hotel.
Location
A short walk to Plaza des Armas and restaurants. Very noisy/ busy part of town. Felt safe but did not like being in the bustle/chaos of the center.
Staff
Nice enough- we were always greeted when coming and going.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Shower had mold and peeling paint. Windows were ridiculously inefficient for noise and temperature. Not sure how that room would be in summer but I suspect very hot, humid and noisy.
El Refugio Hotel Colca
Chivay

Amazing! Like a 5-star retreat! Wonderful location and exceptional staff. Everything felt like we were appreciated and welcome. They had tea and filtered water for travelers.

Authenticity & Character
The whole theme was consistent with the “out of the way retreat” atmosphere.
Location
Located off the road, out of town right on the river. Only people around were guests and staff. Very peaceful setting!
Staff
Very attentive, friendly and helpful.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The triple room was adequate. Spacious bathroom. Not a lot of amenities in the room - maybe they could add a kettle and tea option given how cold the location was.
Hacienda Plaza de Armas
Puno

Located on the Plaza des Armas which is great for getting around to restaurants and local shops but horrible for sleeping. Big bathroom but old jacuzzi tub instead of shower which raised accessibility issues for one of us. They had filtered water easily available to travelers which was welcome and appreciated. Overall the hotel was adequate with nothing to get too excited about.

Authenticity & Character
Seemed out of date, particularly the jacuzzi bath tub instead of a real shower unit.
Location
Terrible for sleeping (the Plaza is too noisy) but great for getting around the city.
Staff
Not too friendly but provided basic service.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Old fashioned looking but not in a good way.
Ferre Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu

Adequate - nothing special. Needs to have either filtered water or tea available in the lobby.

Authenticity & Character
Breakfast room was nice but otherwise the atmosphere wasn’t anything special. Seems liked an ordinary hotel.
Location
Right near train station, street market and restaurants. Unfortunately too close to the train tracks so you heard and felt trains coming.
Staff
Helpful and friendly.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Typical.
Tierra Viva Cusco San Blas
Cusco

Greatness in everything - location, staff rooms. They provided two types of tea all day and filled out water bottles from the kitchen. Room had a tea kettle which we used for the colder nights.

Authenticity & Character
It was small enough to feel valued as a guest with quaint decor.
Location
Perfectly situated in San Blas area - easy to walk to restaurants or shopping. Very safe atmosphere along the local streets.
Staff
Very helpful each time we asked for something. Complimentary cookies at check in and drinks in fridge. Excellence in just the little extras they did.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The triple was organized so that one bed had its own separate space, which was perfect instead all being together. Small bathroom but that’s hard to change.
San Agustin Paracas
Paracas

Hotel was nicely situated with great views. Dining option was great considering there weren’t a lot of places around.

Authenticity & Character
The main building seems big and impersonal. Hard to change that.
Location
On the beach and 1 minute walk to Ballestros island tours and tourist street market.
Staff
Attentive and responsive. We had to ask the bar for filtered water but they didn’t seem to mind.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Not their fault but lots of dust and sand from the winds. Hard to keep the rooms clean.
Hotel El Tambo
Lima

Adequate accommodations. Very small breakfast area- hard to find seats. Thank you for having filtered water available to travelers. Good location - 1 km to main walking street.

Authenticity & Character
Small enough to seem special.
Location
Close to the main walking street for shopping and eating. Safe neighborhood.
Staff
Cleanliness & Comfort
Triple room was adequate but nothing great. It would be nice to have had instructions for using the TV.

Shared Arequipa City tour
Arequipa

The Monastery of Santa Catalina was the only worthwhile part of the tour and because it was in the city center, you could get there without a city tour. Most of the interesting things are in the center and easy to see on foot without a guide. The town of Arequipa is chaotic and dirty. We didn’t find anything special about this part of our trip and wished we had just planned without it.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I’m really glad the transportation worked out well and that both Raul and Elizabeth made such a great impression—I’ll be sure to share your kind words with them. I’m also happy to hear you enjoyed Tierra Viva Cusco. I’m sorry, though, that Conde de Lemos and the time in Arequipa didn’t meet your expectations. We just returned from what can only be described as the trip of a lifetime—an unforgettable adventure through Peru that exceeded every expectation. From beginning to end, the entire experience was flawlessly planned and executed, allowing us to be fully immersed in the beauty, culture, and magic of this incredible country.

A heartfelt thank you to Kristy Tizon for organizing such an epic journey. Every hotel, transfer, activity, and tour was thoughtfully curated, and her attention to detail made everything seamless. We felt completely supported and taken care of throughout the trip.

Along the way, we met so many wonderful people who made this adventure even more special. Everyone went above and beyond to ensure we had an amazing time—kind, welcoming, and truly passionate about what they do.

A very special shoutout to Flor Bocangel Zuñiga and Carlos, our incredible guide and driver in the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and the Rainbow Mountains. Flor brought each destination to life with her deep knowledge, professionalism, and warmth. She was incredibly attentive, thoughtful, and quickly became like a family friend. Carlos was equally wonderful—calm, kind, and a highly skilled driver who made us feel safe and comfortable throughout the journey. We couldn’t have asked for a better team!

Our day trip from Lima with Berrios Travel was another standout experience. Huge thanks to our guide Jaime, who was fun, knowledgeable, and engaging, and to Henry, our excellent driver. From Paracas and the Ballestas Islands to a local winery tour and an exhilarating desert dune buggy and sandboarding adventure, it was a day packed with fun and adventure.

For those seeking a thrill, our whitewater rafting trip with River Explorers on the Rio Vilcanota (Class III–IV) near Cusco was an absolute highlight. The group tour was incredibly well organized, exciting, and safe—plus, the included lunch was delicious.

While every destination on this journey was beautiful in its own way, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and the Rainbow Mountains stood out as truly magical. Each one took our breath away—visually stunning, spiritually moving, and unforgettable. These places have now earned a permanent place among the most cherished and awe-inspiring locations we’ve ever visited.

Peru has absolutely captured our hearts. The people, the history, the food, and the landscapes left a lasting impression. We will treasure these memories forever and are so grateful to everyone who helped make this journey so extraordinary.

Thank you again for making this dream adventure a reality!

For the first time, we went through a travel agency for our vacation, and the experience was extremely good. Highly recommended for a trip to Peru for sure. Kimkim and the local agent, Liz, were very good at understanding our style of vacation, and after very few iterations, the agent came up with a plan for 2 weeks that was above and beyond our expectations. We knew we wanted to go to the jungle, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca, but the trip was filled with a lot of little things we would not have thought of if we were organizing it ourselves. For the main sightseeing places, we had either a private guide (Machu Picchu) or we were at most 2-3 families (ATV tour through the Sacred Valley or the Rainbow Mountain). Having the guide was really good since there is no signage explaining the various sites. The guides also took the time to take a picture of the whole family, and it is nearly the first time in our lives that we have beautiful photos with the four of us.
Aside from the must-see places like Machu Picchu, the travel agency proposed a few things we did not know. First was the excursion to the Rainbow Mountain. They booked for the new excursion (less touristy) where three mountains can be spotted, and it was fantastic. The walk to the "top" was wonderful, surrounded by alpacas and beautiful views. The second big surprise was the train from Cusco to Puno. A 10-hour ride through the Andes on a beautiful old-fashioned train, with an amazing 3-course meal, live music, and panoramic car. Last but not least, they booked us a meal at a farm in Ollantaytambo, and it was such an authentic experience with some of the best food I had ever had.
The agent organized a private pickup to the minute for every transportation and helped with the logistics for some excursions (such as a van brought our luggage while we were riding the ATV). Of the whole trip, the only thing we did not like was the visit to the Taquila island, since we were on a boat with 35 people and we were rushed on numerous occasions.
The hotels they chose for us were extremely good, always very central. Particularly good was the one in Cusco, in the middle of the historic center.
Throughout the trip, we had a contact person in Peru (Thank you, Lisbeth!), always ready to help us and answer questions.
The trip was unforgettable and organized nearly to perfection, I truly don't think I could do the same on my own. My only reservation about Kimkim is a bit about the price transparency. The money we paid seems a little high given the local prices, but in fairness, we got quotes from other travel agencies, and it was in the right ballpark.

The kayaking was good, but it was attached to the group (a very large group) to go to the Taquila island. We were rushed to he island with the Uros, and also, all the time, on the Taquila island, we were rushed. I strongly advise getting a private tour on the lake instead; this excursion did not work for us. A real pity since the kayak part was nice. Also we were expecting 1.5 hours of kayaking but we did only 1 h.
