What you'll do

You'll begin this guided walk with a meeting of the expert local, who will lead you around some of Lisbon's most famed sites. Your guide will point out the major attractions and recount anecdotes about local stories and lore to give you a deeper understanding of this ancient city, whose origins date back to 1200 BCE. You'll stop at several of Lisbon's key highlights, which may include strolling through the upscale shopping area around Chiado Square and taking in the 12th-century Lisbon Cathedral, the oldest church in the city.

Other stops can include the old town of Baixa, rebuilt after the massive earthquake of 1755, and is home to Rossio Square. You'll head to the Praça do Comércio on the banks of the Tagus River and stand under the 18th-century arch, Arco da Rua Augusta. This excursion will end with a tasting of ginjinha, a sour cherry liqueur that's been a favorite of Portugal since its creation in the 1800s.

Elsa was a wonderful tour guide! She showed us hidden gems in Lisbon, best places to eat, and fantastic views! Gui (Guillermo) from "Your Friend in Lisbon" was an incredible tour guide. His background in Portuguese history and culture added so much value to the tour. We learned so much about the history of Portugal! He took us to all of the most important places in the city, and pointed out some really helpful tips for getting around (i.e. the hidden elevator in Baixa-Chiado). The meeting point at the Restoradoes monument was a bit confusing as there was another large group tour starting there at... Read more

The meeting point at the Restoradoes monument was a bit confusing as there was another large group tour starting there at the same time. In the future, it might be helpful to have a sign with the name of the tour company, as it was initially challenging to find our guide.

Tips for future travelers

Bring your best walking shoes, water, and sunscreen! Be prepared for lots of hills and stairs - but it is well worth the effort!
