What you'll do

Your afternoon exploration of Naxos Town begins when you meet your private guide in front of Naxos Town Hall and set off on foot. Your walk will take you around the historic Old Town, from the idyllic port to the hilltop Venetian Castle (known as the Kastro), as your gifted storyteller guide brings the past to life with stories of the island's mythology, culture, and history. When you reach the atmospheric 13th-century fortress, pause for some incredible photo ops from its well-preserved turrets and walls, and learn about its role during the Venetian rule of the 13th through 16th centuries.

Your walk continues back down through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, passing bustling markets filled with colorful fruit stands and stalls with aromatic herbs and spices. End the evening by crossing the narrow causeway to awe-inspiring Portara, also known as the Temple of Apollo.

Located on the tiny islet of Palatia just above the port, this dramatic 26-foot (8 m) marble doorway overlooks the sea and is all that's left of an unfinished sixth-century BCE temple to the Greek sun god. The ruins overlook the neighboring island of Delos and offer panoramic views over Naxos Town and the castle. Watch a memorable sunset framed through the Portara (particularly colorful during the warm, summer months), then part ways with your guide and head back to the Old Town in time for dinner.
