What you'll do
After meeting your guide, you'll set off on a fascinating deep dive into the world of Michelangelo—one shaped as much by conflict and politics as by artistic brilliance. As you walk through the city's historic streets, you'll hear stories of how the young sculptor first caught the attention of Lorenzo de' Medici, known as Lorenzo the Magnificent, and was welcomed into the influential Medici household. Your guide will also reveal how this once-close relationship later unraveled into suspicion and danger, forcing Michelangelo into hiding.
Your first stop is the Medici Chapels, the final resting place for nearly 50 dynasty members. Here, you'll admire Michelangelo's masterful architectural and sculptural work while learning about the dramatic period when the artist secretly sheltered beneath the New Sacristy to escape threats against his life (if available, you can book a visit to the hidden chamber, where sketches attributed to the artist still cover the walls). The chapels themselves are filled with impressive marble tombs, symbolic figures, and striking Renaissance artistry, offering a deeper appreciation for Michelangelo's emotional and creative genius.
Continue through the lively Duomo area, where your guide will point out hidden corners and share lesser-known anecdotes tied to Florence's Renaissance past before taking a short refreshment break in a nearby café or bar. When ready, you'll then head to the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, the city's oldest public building and now home to some of Michelangelo's earliest sculptures. As you explore its stellar collection, you'll trace the beginnings of the artist's career and see how his unmistakable style developed over time.
