What you'll do

Your experience begins at Palazzo Pitti, the immense Renaissance palace that dominates Florence's Oltrarno district just south of the Arno River, and connected to Palazzo Vecchio via the "secret" Vasari Corridor. Originally commissioned in 1458 by banker Luca Pitti, the palace was intended to rival that of Palazzo Medici. At first, it did not, and it wasn't until 1549 when Eleonora di Toledo, wife of Cosimo I de' Medici, bought the palace and the Medici dynasty transformed it into the gem of Renaissance architecture and grandeur of what it is today.

Once inside, you'll uncover how the palace became the lavish residence of Florence's ruling dynasties, including the Medici, the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, and, later, the Italian royal family. You'll move through expansive halls, richly decorated apartments, and impressive galleries, like the Palatine Gallery, home to an exceptional Renaissance painting collection. Here, your guide will introduce works like Raphael's celebrated La Velata, Titian's La Bella, and Filippo Lippi's tender depictions of the Madonna and Child, among others. You'll admire ornate ceilings, gilded details, and dramatic frescoes and stucco work, much of it created by the renowned Baroque artist Pietro da Cortona.

The experience continues outdoors in the famed Boboli Gardens, the sprawling green space that served as the Medici family's formal garden retreat. As you stroll through elegant pathways lined with ancient sculptures, tinkling fountains, secret grottoes, and manicured terraces, you'll discover one of the earliest and most influential examples of Italian garden design. Your guide will point out hidden corners, panoramic viewpoints over Florence, and the artistic touches that transformed the gardens into an open-air extension of the palace itself.
