What you'll do

After meeting your guide, you'll venture over to Palazzo Vecchio, Florence's iconic fortress-like palace that has served as the city's center of government for centuries. Known over time as Palazzo della Signoria, Palazzo Ducale, and several other names, the building has witnessed the evolution of Florence from a republic to the seat of the Medici duchy and beyond. Today, it remains both the city hall and one of Florence's richest historical museums, replete with exquisite artworks and architectural genius.

As you explore the palace's grand halls and chambers with your private guide, you'll uncover stories of political rivalries, dramatic power shifts, imprisonments, and public speeches that shaped Florence's history. You'll learn about figures like Cosimo de' Medici, who was once imprisoned here, and later Cosimo I de' Medici, who transformed Florence's medieval civic headquarters into a lavish ducal palace (and symbol of Medici authority).

A highlight of the visit is the stunning Salone dei Cinquecento (Hall of the Five Hundred), a vast ceremonial hall adorned with monumental frescoes, gilded details, and artistic tributes designed to glorify Cosimo I and his wife, Eleonora. Your guide will reveal how many of the palace's artworks served not only as decoration, but also as carefully crafted political messaging intended to reinforce Medici influence and their legacy. You'll also venture into lesser-known spaces and hidden areas tucked behind the palace walls, secret passageways and rooms that connected the inner workings of the Florentine Republic.

Your time concludes in the Sala della Guardaroba (Wardrobe Room) in the palace's museum. More commonly known as the Sala delle Carte Geografiche (Map Room), you'll have time to peruse the centuries-old, oil painted maps that reveal how people once imagined the known world, but not before you consider climbing the 233 steps of the Arnolfo Tower for some of the best views over Florence—at 308 feet (94 m) tall, you'll have a perfect bird's-eye view of the Duomo!
