Overview

Discover the historic Mystras Castle, an imposing fortress that was once the capital of the Byzantine state with this 2-hour private guided tour. Erected in 1249 CE, the castle is the most important Byzantine monument in Greece, sprawling across a steep mountainside. You'll enjoy walking through this preserved archeological site led by a local expert guide.

Mystras is very atmospheric and photogenic, set into three distinct zones representing different historical eras. You'll tour the Upper City (Ano Chora) with the Despot's Palaces, the Lower City (Kato Chora) with the Metropolis, and the Outer City (Exo Chora). Your guide will share important historical information and detail what daily life was like in the city.

In this tour tickets for the Mystras archaeological site are included. 

Depending on your accommodation, and your travel specialist’s advice, a private transfer to the site can be arranged.

Dimitris was our tour guide for Mystras Castle. I remember driving up to the town and seeing some ruins way high up on the mountain and thinking "I really hope it isn't that all the way up there." But it was lol. I was quickly relieved though when Dimitris told us that we would be going downhill, not uphill. We took our car to the top to park and made our way down, stopping at the sites a long the way. Alongside the history, which was fascinating, he also had a vast knowledge of the plants in... But it was lol. I was quickly relieved though when Dimitris told us that we would be going downhill, not uphill. We took our car to the top to park and made our way down, stopping at the sites a long the way. Alongside the history, which was fascinating, he also had a vast knowledge of the plants in the area and I loved hearing about all the different ones as we walked by them. It was a wonderful experience and I hope to go back when they finish renovating.
