Hotel Continental, Oslo

5.0 (2 reviews) · Luxury
This family-owned luxury hotel is steps from some of Oslo’s top attractions and offers impressive dining options.

Overview

One of the longest-running hotels in Norway’s capital sits across the street from the National Theater. This is more than a luxury hotel though, it’s a point of pride for Oslo residents with a family-owned history dating back to the 19th century—and you’ll find just as many locals as international guests at the memorable restaurants and bars. Renovated rooms for their part—many with bathtubs—have upscale amenities, while the corner units offer views of the Oslofjord and Nobel Peace Center.

Pros
  • Enjoy an approachable but classy family-owned hotel, centrally located in Norway's capital, a short walk from the Aker Brygge waterfront area.
  • Renovated rooms have Nespresso machines, Apple TV, and upscale bath products, while some suites have walk-out terraces and fjord views.
  • The historic restaurant Theatercafeen draws locals, tourists, and celebs, while a fancier restaurant serves set course menus; there's also a more casual pizzeria and an elegant lobby bar with occasional DJs.
Cons
  • There is no spa or indoor pool on-site unlike other luxury hotels in this category.

Authenticity

Hotel Continental has had a fascinating history since it first opened in 1860, and today it is run by the fourth generation of the same family. Because of this history, it is often the place where Norwegians come for a staycation, adding a native element to the international clientele. Recent renovations in 2018 included new rooms and a spiffy lobby bar and lounge with Edvard Munch prints, providing an approachable but elegant place to meet for afternoon tea, pre-theater drinks, or late-night cocktails with occasional DJs. Then there are three notable restaurants (more on this later) that are each draws in their own right—making it one of the best hotel dining scenes in Oslo. Another proud cred: It's been a part of the Leading Hotels of the World since 1975.

Location

It's hard to top Hotel Continental's location within walking distance of most of Oslo's sights and major attractions. The National Theater is across the street in a leafy plaza and a short stroll to pedestrian-friendly Karl Johans gate, which eventually leads to Oslo Central Station with express service to and from the airport (15 minutes by foot). In the other direction is Palace Park, a beautiful green space with a palace that houses the King and Queen of Norway. Toward the Oslofjord is the Nobel Peace Center, which leads to the Aker Brygge, a waterfront path lined with shops, restaurants, and museums. While all the above can be reached on foot, taxi service is available, and there are several tram and transit options in the area. The hotel also offers 10 parking spaces in a nearby garage for a daily fee and must be booked in advance.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The hotel has 151 rooms and suites that have been refurbished as of 2018 with a classic, contemporary style. Guests in any room category enjoy plush furnishings, working desks, AppleTV, Nespresso machines, bathrobes, slippers, mini-bars, and Molton Brown bath products in eco-friendly pumps. Higher room categories offer more space and separate showers and bathtubs, while a few corner units, including the two-floor Continental Suite, offer walk-out terraces and views of the Oslofjord.

Other Highlights

As part of the refurbishment, a modern fitness center was added, but there is no spa or indoor pool. The hotel has an impressive dining scene starting with a gourmet breakfast, included in the price for guests. For other meals, you'll find three restaurants and a lobby bar with occasional live music and DJs. High-end dining can be found at restaurant Eik Annen Etage, which has weekly tasting menus and wine packages. There's also a casual pizza restaurant and bar. The Theatercafeen gets the most attention with its tall ceilings, big windows, and Art Nouveau touches. Walls are lined with portraits that showcase Norwegian's famous writers and artists from the years gone by, while the entrance features photos of the many celebrities and dignitaries who have dined here.

Sustainability

Hotel Continental has been Eco-Lighthouse certified since 2011, which means it meets strict requirements in a variety of areas of hotel operations. Guests are encouraged to reduce food waste, not change linens daily, and drink water from the tap, thereby reducing plastic.
