Hotel Nord 1901, Girona

5.0 (1 review) Upscale
Family-run boutique hotel with smart, modern rooms and a courtyard pool and garden

Overview

Hotel Nord 1901 is a modern boutique hotel in a historic building that's been owned by the same family for over 100 years. The convenient New Town location is just a few minutes' walk from Girona's historic center and Jewish Quarter, and rooms are simple and well-equipped, with the option for larger suites with private terraces and seating areas. The courtyard garden is a particularly nice perk for central Girona—with a small pool, sun deck, and summer bar, it's a welcome oasis to unwind after days of sightseeing or cycling around the city.

Pro
  • You'll enjoy an excellent location just a quick 2-minute walk across the river and into Girona's Jewish Quarter and Old Town.
  • Rooms and suites are simple but newly renovated, and some offer private balconies or terraces.
  • The hotel's terrace features a small outdoor pool, a sun deck, and a garden.
  • The summer poolside is perfect for a spritz and a swim after a day of sightseeing.
  • The hotel offers a bike storage facility across the street—handy for travelers visiting Girona for its renowned cycling.
  • Service is uniformly excellent, with a small, helpful staff that knows the city well.
Cons
  • You can also book self-catering apartments through the hotel, but they don't have an online booking system for those, so you must call to make arrangements.
  • The hotel is located on a one-way street, so taxis and transfers sometimes need to pick up and drop off around the corner.

Authenticity

Hotel Nord 1901 has been owned by the same Girona family for over 120 years, taking its name from the date it was bought by Dr. Josep Maria Massa. Today, the family home is now a small hotel, run by Josep's grandson Luís. The latest 2019 renovation enlarged rooms and added a restaurant, and while the interiors are thoroughly contemporary, there are still shades of the building's original charm and character in the high ceilings, tile floors, arched doorways, and iron balconies. Beyond the warm family-style service and comfortable rooms, a real perk here is the courtyard garden—complete with a small pool.

Location

The hotel sits on a busy yet charming New Town shopping street with very little car traffic. Though it's just outside the historic Jewish Quarter, you'll be a 2-minute walk from the Old Town via the iconic red Eiffel Bridge (Pont de les Peixateries Velles), which crosses the Río Onyar. Both the Girona Cathedral and the Arab Baths are a 7-minute walk away, and the Plaça Independència—the city's main starting and meeting point for most tours—is just around the corner, as is the famous Rocambolesc ice cream shop. There's paid parking available nearby, and the train station is a 15-minute walk (or 5-minute taxi ride) south.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The 31 contemporary air-conditioned rooms and suites are simply furnished with dark woods and earthy tones of ocher and charcoal. Doubles are comfortable but can feel a little dark; Superior units add more space and light with French windows, while Suites include seating areas and private terraces. Bathrooms are modern and sleek, with rain-style showers and eco-friendly toiletries (plus separate soaking baths in the Suites). All floors are accessible by elevator. The hotel also offers a lovely selection of self-catering apartments throughout the city for those looking for more space or longer stays.

Amenities

The hotel's terrace features a small pool, a sun deck with plenty of loungers, and a summer bar, all surrounded by greenery, so it's a pretty relaxing place. Grab a drink at the bar and enjoy your time swimming, reading a book, or sunbathing. An optional breakfast buffet is also available each morning, served in a small, ground-floor dining area. Travelers visiting Girona for its cycling can book bike rentals through the front desk, and the hotel offers bike storage in a secure room across the street.

Family-Friendliness

Hotel Nord 1901 welcomes families, though there are limited room options for larger groups. An extra bed or crib can be added to rooms, but the hotel's city apartments are a better bet for families of more than three, with self-catering facilities and multiple bedrooms.

I'm a kimkim staff member, and I recently stayed at Hotel Nord 1901 during a work trip to Spain. This was one of my favorite hotel experiences of the trip, thanks to its fantastic location, welcoming staff, and peaceful atmosphere. I would particularly recommend Hotel Nord 1901 for travelers who want easy access to Girona's historic center while enjoying a quieter setting just outside the busiest tourist areas.

Authenticity & Character
Hotel Nord 1901 has been owned by the same Girona family for more than 120 years and remains operated by the founder's grandson today! While the hotel was extensively renovated in 2019, it still retains elements of its historic character through features. One of the highlights was the outdoor pool area, which felt like a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city.
Location
Although technically located in Girona's newer district, the hotel sits just across the river from the historic center and within easy walking distance of the city's main attractions. The iconic Eiffel Bridge is only a block and a half away, while Plaza Independència, a common meeting point for guided tours, is just around the corner. Girona's historic streets, cathedral, and basilica are all easily accessible on foot.
Staff
The staff was exceptionally professional, friendly, and helpful throughout my stay. Upon check-in, they provided a thoughtful list of restaurant recommendations that made exploring Girona even easier.
Cleanliness & Comfort
My Superior Suite was extremely spacious and featured a large, well-appointed bathroom. The hotel's design feels elegant and sophisticated, with rich wood tones and warm earth-colored accents throughout the property.
