Las Casas de la Judería, Seville

4.5 (14 reviews) · Upscale
Charming historic retreat spread across numerous 14th-century buildings, with a rooftop pool, a Roman-inspired spa, and proximity to Seville's landmarks

Overview

Las Casas de la Judería offers a historic and atmospheric retreat in Seville's mazelike Santa Cruz neighborhood. Landmarks like the Alcázar are within easy strolling distance, and the hotel's rooftop pool features views of the Giralda Tower. The property spans multiple restored buildings, linked by a labyrinth of traditional Andalusian patios, gardens, and stone tunnels, and each room is completely unique, featuring 14th-century details and antique furnishings. Downstairs, there's an ancient Roman-inspired spa, a gourmet shop, and an elegant piano bar with live music.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • The historic property is connected via a network of ancient tunnels, Andalusian patios, and cobbled courtyards.
  • Rooms are spread throughout 27 interconnected buildings, each offering a distinct character, individual antique furnishings, and original architectural features.
  • The prime location in the Barrio Santa Cruz puts you close to attractions like the Royal Alcázar and surrounded by the historic Jewish Quarter.
  • There's a season rooftop pool with views of the Seville skyline, plus a downstairs piano bar and a gourmet shop for snacks and wine.
  • An ancient Roman-inspired spa provides treatments in an underground setting with mosaic walls and marble.
Cons
  • The historic buildings can have thin walls, and you might hear noise from neighboring guests or plumbing.
  • Lots of rooms face inner courtyards; ask for a street-facing upper floor for more light and views.
  • The breakfast room can be noisy and hot in the summer.
  • WiFi is unreliable in rooms; you'll need to head to the lounge or lobby for strong service.

Authenticity

Entering the 14th-century buildings of Las Casas de la Judería feels like stepping back in time. The hotel underwent its latest renovation in 2023, and today the property comprises 27 interconnected historic houses and palaces, linked by a labyrinthine series of tunnels, patios, and gardens adorned with fountains, statues, and columns. It feels more like exploring a tucked-away neighborhood than a hotel, and getting a little lost on the way to your room is part of the experience. Inside, the decor is steeped in tradition (blending antique furniture, wood floors, original beams, and shades of aquamarine, slate, and terracotta), and each room is named after a Sevillan historic event or former resident.

Location

You'll be located deep in Seville's atmospheric Santa Cruz neighborhood, once the city's Jewish Quarter and now a vibrant warren of cobblestone alleys, shaded squares, and authentic restaurants and tapas bars. It's a 10-minute stroll to landmarks like the Royal Alcázar and the Cathedral, and a 20-minute walk to Plaza España or riverside Triana. Several tram stops like Archivo de Indias are about 10 minutes away on foot, and you can reach the train station in under 25 minutes. The hotel is accessible by car and only a 20-minute drive from the airport. There's no parking on-site, but paid parking is available nearby.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Despite its small, boutique feel, there are 178 air-conditioned rooms spread throughout the hotel's interconnected houses and palaces. Each is unique, but all retain some of the buildings' 14th-century details, like exposed beams, wood floors, French windows, painted shutters, and traditional wrought-iron rejas (window grills). The lived-in, period decor feels in keeping with the historic setting, with a mix of antique furniture, inlaid wallpapers, floral upholstery, opulent curtains, and original Andalusian art prints and sketches. The Junior Suites offer more luxury with king-sized beds, lounge areas, and Jacuzzi tubs. Most bathrooms have marble sinks, showers, and bathtubs.

Amenities

The hotel's seasonal rooftop pool is a popular spot in the summer, with views of the Giralda Tower and Seville skyline, a Jacuzzi area, and separate sun terraces on the elevated tower portions. You can order drinks and light snacks here, or head down to the second-floor piano bar for a more formal setting and live music. Breakfast is optional and served buffet-style in the stone cellar, and there's a small gourmet shop off the lobby where you can grab a bottle of wine, chilled cava, and Andalusian treats like olives and almonds. The underground Las Termas de Hispalis Spa evokes a Roman bathhouse with mosaic walls, heated marble benches, and various pools and treatments.

Family-Friendliness

Although Las Casas de la Judería isn't particularly family-focused, it does offer some family-friendly features. Kids up to age two stay for free, and extra beds are available for children up to age 12. The Superior and Double rooms can accommodate families with space for extra beds. However, there are no specific activities or food options for children, and the hotel's layout may be challenging for those with strollers.

Its a trip back to the 15th century! The hotel is a renovated historical building and renovated very well. Lots of art and character. This was the worst hotel of our entire trip. First they gave us a room where we would have to go up about 10 steps just to get to the bathroom at night. As that didn't work for us, they offered us the room next door and told us to go on out and tour the city. When we came back they had only a really inferior room with lights that were shining on my wife all night because the cover was gone. They offered to put a towel over the light but never did. Then it got worse. We felt the problem was with the people at the reception who just didn't care.

Really cool maze of a hotel. Our room was either accessed through a 5 minute walk through tunnels, leading to various lovely courtyards, then crossing an alleyway into yet another old building. Really cool maze of a hotel. Our room was either accessed through a 5 minute walk through tunnels, leading to various lovely courtyards, then crossing an alleyway into yet another old building. The other way was walking outside along a few alleys- we eventually got it down without getting lost. Unique place as all the old mansions have been connected. Our room was very spacious- largest of the trip. Not newly renovated but in good shape and clean which added to the historical character feeling. There was an elegant piano bar on the 2nd floor of the main entry building decorated with lots of very old, elegant furniture- the kind you see in museums that they tell you not to sit on - except you could it on them - old painting on the walls. If we weren't dressed like 21st century tourists, you could feel like you were having a drink in an 18th or 19th century salon of some sort.
Breakfast was generous- lots of choice, coffee was a fancy Nespresso machine - prefer real coffee myself but not bad.
Our roomed looked out on an alley- one rainy night someone's motorbike alarm kept loudly sounding though the hotel staff were able to remedy that for remaining nights.

Authenticity & Character
The most historical, atmospheric place we stayed in.
Location
In the historical area - Seville is bigger than some cities so still lots of walking to do
Staff
No complaints- very nice.
