Áurea Catedral Hotel, Granada

A historic hotel across the street from the Cathedral featuring its own archeological museum with Arab ruins

Overview

Áurea Catedral encompasses several historic houses and preserves its history with Neo-Pompeian paintings on its facade and a glass-encased archaeological site with old stone ruins. Guests can enjoy breakfast or a drink in the inner courtyard of a 16th-century manor house or relax in the sauna or Turkish bath. Rooms are relatively simple, but some include balconies or terraces with a view of the Cathedral.

Pros
  • The location across from the Catedral de Granada is hard to beat, as you'll be in the middle of the city's historic center and can easily walk to sites like the Albaicín neighborhood and Alhambra.
  • The hotel is historic, featuring preserved Neo-Pompeian paintings on its facade and an archaeological area with Arab ruins and art—its own mini-museum.
  • Several historic buildings make up the hotel's grounds, including a 16th-century manor house with a beautiful inner courtyard.
  • There's a rooftop terrace with Cathedral views, a gym, a sauna, and a Turkish bath.
Cons
  • Despite being housed in historical buildings, the rooms lack character and are similar to those at a standard hotel.
  • The hotel doesn't have a bar or a restaurant. The breakfast buffet costs extra, and some past visitors say it's not worth the price.
  • Some guest rooms face an apartment building, so neighbors might be able to see into rooms, especially at night.
  • Noise can be an issue in guest rooms that face the street, though soundproofing helps.

Authenticity

The hotel encompasses several historic buildings and homes, including a 16th-century manor house, where the property gets its lovely inner courtyard and fountain. The hotel's facade features preserved Neo-Pompeian paintings, and there's an art gallery and archaeological room with Arab ruins on the ground floor.

Location

You'll find the hotel across the street from the Catedral de Granada, so it's in the city's core and walkable to numerous sites, including the Albaicín neighborhood, La Alcaicería, and the Alhambra.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Rooms and bathrooms are simple without much character, though spacious and comfortable. Families can book rooms with two double beds, and those wanting a little more space can opt for the junior suites, some with balconies or terraces with Cathedral views.

Amenities

Áurea Catedral has a small, Moorish-influenced wellness area with a sauna, steam room, and lounge chairs. A fitness room in the basement is open from 7 am to 11 pm. Guests can access a rooftop, although it doesn't have any services. Some guest rooms are adapted for travelers with limited mobility.

Family-Friendliness

Áurea Catedral offers no specific activities or amenities for kids. With elevators to reach upper-floor rooms, the hotel is stroller-friendly. Babysitting services can be arranged for an extra fee.

Other Highlights

Because of the hotel's location, its terrace has unbeatable views of the cathedral and is a great place to relax at sunset. The breakfast buffet is served in a comfortable dining area, though you can also take your meal onto the patio.

The room we were assigned on our arrival was at street level, had windows that could not keep the sounds of the street and loud banter and shouts of the people from the restaurant and street from being very loudly into the room. Look for a room away from the street

The location of this hotel is great but the hotel rooms backing into the street and bar can be very loud until quite late at night. The staff at the front desk were professional but in the breakfast area the staff were very warm and helpful. The spread was great as well. Read more
