The 120-year-old building retains its historic character while reinventing itself as a cultural hub complete with a working library, art-filled public spaces (displaying carefully chosen pieces collected by owner Önder Şahan), and even a culinary school. Each of the 75 guestrooms is individually designed around a notable historical figure—from Jane Austen and Marie Curie to Confucius and George Orwell—with custom furnishings and storytelling details. Warm, personal service (Önder is often seen chatting with guests and tending to the plants) adds to the welcoming, eclectic space.

Location

Set in East London's Limehouse neighborhood, a historic riverside district centered on the Limehouse Basin marina, you'll be among a mix of cobbled streets, Georgian townhouses, converted Victorian warehouses, as well as slick waterside developments and marina living. It's a quieter alternative to the capital's busier districts—about 40 minutes from the city center by public transit—though you'll get a more local taste of everyday London. A handful of parks, eateries, and pubs are within walking distance (like the 16th-century The Grape, an 8-minute walk), and Canary Wharf, with its Docklands museum, is a 16-minute walk or a 4-minute taxi ride. And while located on a busy road, its thick double-glazed windows help keep some of that noise out, while rear-facing rooms are a safer bet.
