The small town of Purmamarca is a little over 110 miles (180 km) north of Salta, the capital of Salta Province. Many people choose to rent a car to explore the region, but private transfers between the two are also available.

This 11-day itinerary takes you to both Salta and Purmamarca and gives you a chance to take in the dramatic scenery of the region. Or check out this 2-week road trip that starts in Buenos Aires and takes you to Bariloche, Mendoza, and Salta.

By Rental Car or Private Transfer

Duration: 2.5-3 hours, more with a stop in Jujuy

Private car transfers are available between Purmamarca and Salta, a journey that takes around 2.5 hours to complete. If you are traveling by rental car, follow the directions from Purmamarca to the RN9 and turn right. The road south takes you along the Río Grande and is bordered by colorful hills.

You'll drive through San Salvador de Jujuy (commonly called Jujuy), a medium-sized city that's a good halfway point to stop, and grab a bite to eat. Then take the RN66, and make another right to get onto RN34. From there you'll make a last right back onto RN9, and follow that into Salta.

You can also follow the RN9 all the way to Salta, though that itinerary takes longer (around 3 hours).
