Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Geneva, Afternoon Lake Cruise

Step aboard a boat for a gentle cruise along Geneva's waterfront and the Jet d'Eau fountain

Welcome to Switzerland! For sheer Alpine beauty and outdoor fun, it's hard to beat this Central European gem for a family vacation—particularly in the warmer months when the wildflowers are in bloom, the hiking trails are open, and the glassy lakes are beckoning for a cruise. Your Swiss adventure begins when you touch down in Geneva, located on the shores of the eponymous lake and surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountains.

Get settled into your hotel, then set off to explore the Old Town's maze of narrow streets and historic buildings, including St. Peter's Cathedral, the 12th-century Maison Tavel (Switzerland's oldest house), and Place du Bourg-de-Four, a lively square with cafés and shops. Little ones might also enjoy some quirky fun with puppets at the Théâtre des Marionnettes de Genève, or a stop by the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle. End with a gentle sightseeing cruise, where the kids will be delighted by an up-close look at the lake's spectacular Jet d'Eau fountain.

Day 2: Geneva Old Town & Chocolate Tour, Salève Cable Car

Taste your way around Geneva's finest chocolateries on today's kid-friendly city tour

Today you'll get to know Geneva on a walking tour that combines sightseeing and cultural storytelling with plenty of sweet treats—a perfect way to keep younger travelers engaged and curious along the way. Over three hours, you'll explore cobblestone streets, hidden courtyards, and historic landmarks while stopping at some of the city's finest artisan chocolate shops, pausing to taste everything from decadent pralines and smooth truffles to rich drinking chocolate and delicate pastries.

If the kids still have energy to burn in the afternoon, take a trip up to the "Balcony of Geneva" on the Téléphérique du Salève cable car, which soars to an altitude of 3,609 feet (1,100 m) in under five minutes. At the top, you'll find plenty to keep all ages busy, including Alpine meadows and hiking trails, a fun rock climbing wall (open to ages six and up), and a panoramic restaurant with far-reaching views over the city, lake, and mountains.

Day 3: Train to Montreux, Visit Château de Chillon

Château de Chillon is more than just a historic site—it's filled with interactive and educational displays

Pack your bags, grab some breakfast, and head to the train station: this morning you're off to Montreux. This resort town sits on the far northeastern shores of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) and is renowned for its scenic beauty, cultural events, and pleasant climate. Try to grab seats on the right side of the train to take in the best views along the 1.5-hour journey, which passes UNESCO-listed vineyards and historic castles as you near an area so beautiful it's known as the Montreux Riviera. Upon arrival, you'll transfer to the hotel, where you'll spend the next couple of nights.

When the family is ready to get moving, start with a visit to the nearby Château de Chillon. Located just south of town, this medieval fortress dates to the 12th century and dominates the waterfront. It's also a wonderland for curious kids, filled with interactive exhibitions and multimedia touchscreens that help bring the fortress's dramatic history to life. Let their imaginations run wild as they explore towers and fortified walls, and even venture underground to hidden passageways and the legendary dungeons.

Day 4: Chocolate & Cheese Train Adventure

Visit the home of Gruyère cheese on today's mouthwatering day trip

Today's full-day adventure begins with a scenic ride on the Swiss Chocolate Train, where you can settle into one of the historic Belle Époque carriages and snack on chocolate bread and coffee as you wind your way to Montbovon. Switch to a comfy bus to reach Gruyères, then unlock the secrets of producing the world-famous Gruyère cheese at La Maison du Gruyère before exploring the pretty medieval town and its 13th-century château.

Then, in the mountainside village of Broc, it's time to dip into the sweet world of La Maison Cailler (the Cailler chocolate factory). Following a fun guided tour, finish with an irresistible finger-licking tasting of handmade chocolate—crafted from local milk in the Cailler factory since 1898 and worthy of a space in your suitcase. This multisensory tasting experience even includes the chance to create your own chocolate bar!

It's time for another spectacular train journey this morning as you pack up the kids and head to the station for a ride on the Golden Pass Express to Interlaken. After just over three hours of postcard-worthy mountain and valley views, you'll arrive at Interlaken, nestled between two turquoise lakes (Thun and Brienz) and framed by the towering Alpine peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

Upon arrival, drop your bags and head directly to the shores of Lake Brienz, where you'll meet your kayaking guide. Strap on your life jackets, hop in your kayaks, and paddle across Brienz's glassy turquoise waters as you enjoy views of the surrounding peaks. During this family-friendly group ride, you'll glide along waterfront cliffs, stop at hidden beaches, and visit castles dating to the 12th century. At the end of the excursion, you'll transfer back to your hotel in Interlaken, where you might want to make it an early night—more outdoor adventures await tomorrow!

Day 6: Interlaken E-Bike Tour, Alpine Cheese Farm Visit with Cow Cuddling

Young animal lovers will be delighted by today's meet-and-greet with gentle Alpine cows

There's more fresh air and mountain views in store today, when you set off on a guided e-bike tour around the Bödeli—the alluvial land between the turquoise lakes of Brienz and Thun. This relaxed (and battery-powered) three-hour ride takes you along forested paths and past wildflower meadows, stopping for a picnic along the Aare River. You'll also pedal through the medieval village of Unterseen and other Bödeli villages, visit the UNESCO-listed subterranean Trümmelbach Falls, and get the chance to meet the animals and taste fresh milk at a local bauernhof (farm).

Families with younger kids might want to opt for a more leisurely-paced exploration of the mountain scenery with a visit to a local farm, reached via a short and scenic 15-minute hike. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted with a traditional brunch (complete with homemade breads, jams, and cheeses) followed by a hands-on cheesemaking workshop. Afterward, parents can soothe tired feet in a whey foot bath while the kids get the chance to meet—and cuddle—the farm's gentle cows.

Day 7: Day Trip to Jungfraujoch, the "Top of Europe"

Take a steep and scenic train ride up Mount Eiger to stand at the "Top of Europe"

Let the whole family rest their legs today with a scenic day trip that begins with a 15-minute cable car ride up to the Eiger Glacier Station, an access point to the mountain of the same name. Located in the Jungfraujoch region of the Swiss Alps and known as the "Top of Europe," this high mountain pass in the Bernese Alps sits at 11,371 feet (3,466 m). From there, you'll ride a cogwheel mountain train to the top and enjoy incredible views of Mount Eiger's north face.

For truly epic vistas, continue to the Jungfraujoch Sphinx Observatory, and look out to the mighty Aletsch glacier (the longest glacier in the Alps), a vast ice flow laid out like an enormous freeway running between mountain peaks. Admire views of the glacier and surrounding mountains, and tour the glimmering tunnels of the neighboring Ice Palace attraction—sure to be a hit with the kids. Then, after lunch at a mountaintop restaurant, descend by cogwheel train to the resort town of Wengen, in the verdant Lauterbrunnen Valley, where a car will be waiting to take you back to Interlaken.

Day 8: Panoramic Train to Zürich, FIFA Museum & Lindt Chocolate Experience

Zürich's Old Town is full of winding streets and medieval architecture

You're off on the final leg of your trip today, with one last train journey northeast to Zürich. The fastest route gets you to the city in two hours, but you'll take your time with a more scenic three-hour route, detouring through Luzern on a panoramic train as you wind past a series of lakes and waterfalls, cross the Brünig mountain pass, and skirt the shores of the Zugersee (Lake Zug). Pull into Zürich, drop your bags at your hotel, and start exploring. Rent a paddleboat on Lake Zürich, stop at an outdoor café for some raclette (grilled cheese), or get lost in the Old Town's winding streets, medieval squares, and churches.

Later on, you can combine two of Switzerland's most beloved passions—football (aka soccer) and chocolate—on a fun excursion that's sure to appeal to sports lovers and sweet tooths. Begin at the FIFA Museum, where interactive exhibits, multimedia displays, and iconic memorabilia bring the beautiful game to life. Then continue to the Lindt Home of Chocolate to trace cacao's journey from Central America, learn about the innovators behind Switzerland's chocolate-making legacy, watch chocolatiers at work, and sample some of Lindt's most famous creations.

Day 9: Day Trip to Rhein Falls: Castle, Waterfall & Fairy-Tale Village

The 1,000-year-old Schloss Laufen has a dramatic setting overlooking Europe's most powerful waterfall

It's the penultimate day of your family trip, and there's one last adventure in store. Make sure the kids grab a filling breakfast and their comfortable walking shoes, then transfer 35 minutes north of Zürich to explore Schloss Laufen. This 1,000-year-old fortress looks straight out of a storybook, perched above the roaring waters of Rhine Falls. After some hide and seek within the castle's grand halls and soaring towers, step outside onto the viewing platforms to feel the spray of Europe's largest waterfall up close, or take a quick boat ride to the base of the cascade.

Next, your driver will take you 30 minutes east to Stein am Rhein, a beautifully preserved medieval village known for its colorful timber-frame houses and 11th-century hilltop castle. Take a guided stroll to learn about the village's rich history, and pause in the Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square) to admire the 16th-century frescoes and ornate, medieval guild signs. Grab some sweet crepes or seasonal pastries at one of the town's family-run bakeries, then make the most of the fairy-tale backdrop with some family photo ops before returning to Zürich in the afternoon.

Day 10: Depart Zürich

You might have time for a final stroll along Lake Zürich before your departing flight

Your 10-day trip through Switzerland draws to a close today. Grab some souvenirs (and plenty of chocolates), then meet your driver, transfer to the airport, and catch your departing flight. Safe travels!
