Lucia put together a trip that hit all the things we wanted to experience. Our guide and driver, Sebastian was terrific. He was a cautious driver and an entertaining, knowledgeable guide. We enjoyed things that weren't on the itinerary, like dropping into his grandfather's bakery for a taste treat. We also enjoyed the interaction with some indigenous communities and checking out local cuisine. Besides being a beautiful country, the people of Ecuador are warm and welcoming.

This hotel is definitely tucked away - which is normally great and relaxing. We were the only ones staying at the hotel so we had the chance to scare ourselves and each other a little bit :P. The rooms were nice and having the heated blankets was a big plus too! I liked the common area with the sunken in bench seating area. We had a very nice relaxing evening hanging by the fire and just visiting with each other.

This spot was an incredible sight! It was definitely a HIKE. Originally we were going to take the burros back up the mountain after hiking down.....mine freaked out and I was thrown off. It didn't seem like the guides had the best handle on the animals. So I ended up hiking back up the mountain...it is STEEP! It's not undoable but it was definitely a trek and you'll need at least 1.5 hrs (and we were really trying to move fast up the hill to meet our friends who's burros didn't freak out). Besides all that drama the Lagoon is extraordinary and the pictures don't do it justice. 1000% recommend seeing it.

Jackie was a complete delight to work with. She was knowledgeable, professional, enthusiastic, and totally engaged with us as clients. We had booked a Galapagos cruise directly with a cruise tour operator, pre-Covid, and then worked with Jackie to set up a land portion for us at various haciendas in the highlands. We ran into numerous cancellations with the cruise, including one that happened *while we were in transit* to Ecuador. Although it was not her problem to solve, Jackie took the time to talk with the less-experienced agency now in charge of that, and it was *only* through her intervention and advice that we had a Galápagos experience on par with the one we had originally booked with a now-defunct company. Her initiative to help us with the very stressful cruise situation showed a level of professionalism and client engagement that was truly above and beyond the call of duty. Our driver and guide for the land portion, Dario, was exceptional — his knowledge was simply remarkable. We particularly liked the Hacienda Cienega (truly superb) and Hacienda Pinsaqui. Jackie arranged for a several surprises that were memorable for different reasons, including a visit to an indigenous community and an opportunity for horseback riding at another hacienda. In closing, we came to feel a great sense of trust in Jackie as someone who had both the experience and empathy to make our Ecuador experience quite remarkable. And when arranging things from far away, trust in the person you are working with locally is paramount.

Hacienda El Porvenir
Machachi

My husband liked it well enough, but I didn’t. The road to get there is horrible and long—-the end result was simply not worth it. The food was not that good and yet more expensive than more upscale haciendas. ; extra charge for eggs with breakfast. I unwisely ordered a salad — forgetting that any greens wouldn’t necessarily be washed with purified water and I guess they weren’t. I got quite ill for days afterwards. The rooms are rustic at best. Granted, it’s a farm kind of hacienda. But it’s a very arduous and uncomfortable drive for a not very remarkable experience. I saw some nose-to-tail horse riding in the cold mist going on. It was clouded in, so any advertised amazing views of Cotapaxi weren’t going to happen. Cotapaxi views are more easily had anywhere else. So even without the getting-sick experience, I just would not recommend this place.

Authenticity & Character
It’s character is what it is — a very remote farm.
Location
Such a long and uncomfortable drive to get to. Nothing to be changed about that.

Nothing can be changed I think, given the structures they are working with.
Hacienda Pinsaqui
Otavalo

This is a lovely hacienda with exceptionally lovely gardens, and a walking path through them and property at large. The common areas were especially nice. Although we were there just as a couple, we were invited to attend welcoming receptions for larger groups (10 or so) that were also staying there. The reception included music from a local Ecuadorian group, Ecuadorian drinks and snacks, and a bit of history about the place. Recommend getting the largest rooms or suites available.

San Jose de Puembo Quito Airport, an Ascend Hotel Collection
Puembo, Quito

We stayed here for two nights to recover from a vert long trip down, and because we we’re starting a tour of the highlands (so it didn’t make sense to stay in Quito at that time). Recommended by Jackie, our Kimkim agent. We felt delighted in the Ecuadorian feel of the common areas, rooms, and grounds. Its atmosphere belies the notion that it is an “airport hotel” — it was originally something else and its property includes adjacent farms land., which guests can walk through. The immediate property had stunning gardens, complete with a few wandering llamas on the grounds. I it was a magical place to experience upon arriving. If your immediate plans are to explore regions outside of Quito, we *highly* recommend staying here.

Authenticity & Character
The Ecuadorian feel of the common areas and rooms, gardens and the paths for guest through the adjacent farm and pasture lands. A fantastic place to land upon arrival in Ecuador.
Location
Outside of the city and therefore convenient for immediate arrival in Ecuador, especially if arriving late and/or taking off for explorations outside of Quito.

This is a spectacular crater lagoon and another example of Ecuador’s natural beauty. But as important, the area is home to indigenous people who have adapted to and taken responsibility for this locale. The ability to see Quilotoa Lagoon as an example of this, and the chance to visit an indigenous family in a remote area were both profound and thought provoking experiences.

Erika was always available for questions leading up to and while we were in Ecuador to make sure everything was what we wanted. The tours were great and informative and fun. Very professional! One of the best parts of our entire trip was our guide for 6 days - Genaro Palacios-! He was absolutely phenomenal!! His stories and historical/nature knowledge were exactly what we were looking for. He was our translator too as our Spanish is definitely not where it needed to be. He is very friendly and filled us full of information the entire trip ( exactly what we needed and wanted). He is also a very good driver, which you want driving through the Andes. We can’t say enough great things of our new friend!! So extremely blessed to have been paired up with Genaro as our guide! We came with some challenges as my wife is celiac. And knowing what she could and couldn’t eat in a foreign country and not that versed in the language was a necessity for us. We stayed on our own for a week after a week with Genaro. He made sure before he left us. that we were comfortable at the markets and grocery stores! Our trip was perfect! Absolutely perfect!!

Hotel Review
Casa Bolívar Hotel Museo
Loja

Very interesting hotel in a renovated historical home, extremely well located in Loja, comfortably appointed and in good shape despite the very old building. It's not really a museum, but there are a lot of very old decorative features and some antique items from people who lived there before it was renovated into a hotel. Breakfast was decent, if a bit slow, and the room was good but a bit off in some ways--the bed could have been more comfortable, there were a lot of automatic lights that easily triggered during the night, and our juliet balcony inner doors didn't entirely close (not unexpected in a building this old and the exterior door closed just fine). It does feel like the hotel is still maybe finding their legs. The operation is a bit new and it looks like not every room is being used yet. The restaurant had good foot traffic but still has very few reviews. I expect they'll work out the kinks a bit, we'd consider giving it another try in a year or so if we're back in Loja given the interesting building, excellent location, friendly staff, historic room interiors, and tasty breakfast.

Authenticity & Character
Very much the highlight! A fascinating old building, crazy room interiors (antique furniture, finishes, even wallpaper), tons of character. Maybe the most unique and most "historic"-feeling boutique hotel we've ever stayed in.
Location
Right in the center of Loja, near plenty of restaurants, safe neighborhood.
Staff
Friendly staff, always at least one English speaker.

I will forward your compliments to your guides Milton and Kevin.
I hope that you’ve had a great time on Galapagos as well, and a safe flight back home. Hopefully, you can come back to mainland Ecuador one day to explore the other parts of the country!
All the best for you and Clare,

While some of the roads in Ecuador can be a little concerning, he’s patient and responsible driving put our minds at ease as we traveled easily and safely. He consistently went the extra mile, finding us opportunities for a bit of extra adventure when available, recommending great restaurants all along the way. I can't recommend Sebastian highly enough. If you're considering a tour in Ecuador, do it with Sebastian. Also our expert trip planner, Mathias, was very helpful during the planning phase but also was diligent on checking up on us during the trip. He responded in a timely manner and seemed very knowledgeable about Ecuador. Highly recommend this company for planning your trips.

Kim Kim is a very useful and user friendly site for my trip planning. Daniel is very responsive and helpful in planning my itinerary to Ecuador. He adjusted the itinerary several times to accommodate my flight changes and preferences. He is friendly and knowledgeable, and provided a packing list for my reference. Daniela was also helpful and she set up a WhatsApp group for communication right before our trip.
The trip to Ecuador is very memorable. The country is beautiful and we had some good tour guides. The best guide was Darwin in Isabella Island in Galapagos. He took great photos and videos with his GoPro underwater and took the group to see a variety of marine life, including penguin, seahorse, sharks, sea lions, iguanas, sea turtles, birds, etc. It was absolutely fantastic to be so close to the animals in their natural habitats. Besides Galapagos, Quilotoa has stunning scenery, the Equator is fun to visit and the Quito historical town is very pretty.
The cons of the itinerary is that there is a lot of time spent on the car and/or boat each day. The hotel locations and the route can be further improved to reduce the driving time. This is especially true for our hotels in Quito, which were rather far from the attractions.
It would also be helpful if we get more information on the exact activities and what we should bring and wear each day, especially for the boat trips.
Overall, we had a very good trip in Ecuador and would love to visit again.

Lucia did an amazing job customizing our travel itinerary to include all of the things we wanted to do, like a food tour to experience the most typical and traditional dishes in Ecuador. She also helped us plan our adventure in the Amazonian Rainforest. Lucia took care of booking the hotels, transportation, and tours. Thank you! This gave us such peace of mind and we were able to really enjoy our vacation.

The travel in the Andes to volcanos, caldera, etc. was beautiful and interesting. I don’t like moving hotels every night and some of the drives were too long. Our guide, Jorge, was very knowledgeable and helpful. I enjoyed having him with us. Two hotels stand out for me...in Quito the cultural Manor and CotopaxiPungo were both beautiful and interesting. The drive to the Cotopaxi Pungo was too rugged and long.
In the Galapagos, Bibi was excellent and then we had a mixture of guides. I would have appreciated more advance knowledge about the experiences, especially the trip to Bartolom, which I wisely skipped and would have been too much for me. Some of us went to Tortuga Bay which was very nice and should have been offered as an alternative. The hotel Deja Vu was nice, friendly and very well located. We all enjoyed it. All the accommodation booked was exactly what we wanted (the Huayna Capac suite at the Luna Volcan adventure spa in Banos was particularly amazing) and all the activities were excellent (horse riding in Cotopaxi national park was a favourite of the kids, despite the weather). There was a lot of travelling during the holiday but the vehicle Daniel booked was perfect and spacious for a family of four.

Iberia airline were awful throughout but that's nothing to do with Kimkim and in fact Daniel helped a lot by finally getting Iberia to return our luggage which they lost. So if you want a reliable tour guide I would recommend Kimkim.

She was so patient with us as we changed our itinerary 4-5 times during the planning. She was always willing to listen to our needs and accommodate to our requests. Her attentiveness continued even during our trip in Ecuador. I forgot my contact lenses which would have ruined the snorkeling excursions in Galapagos . Isabel went out of her way to find contact lenses and dropped them off at my hotel upon my return from Antisana National Park. This was completely above and beyond the call of duty. I so appreciated that.

I can not write this review without mentioning our AMAZING guide, Cristobal. From the moment he picked us up at the airport, we had nothing but first class treatment from Cristobal. He was personable, and knowledgeable. There wasn't anything we ask that he didn't know. His experience and recommendations gave us a close look at the Ecuadorian culture. It was something that we could have never experienced without his guidance. We would not consider going back to Ecuador without using Cristobal again as our guide.
