Kimkim Trip Reviews for Norway

Mar and Fenne were very responsive in the planning process and our trip went pretty well. Some details that we discussed in the planning process were missed and not provided during the trip. We were supposed to have a private bus during one excursion for our group of 10 travelers and that was not arranged. We asked for a sauna cruise and were booked for a standing sauna. We were told that we will be refunded the difference but I have not received any refund as of yet. We did not have assigned seats on one leg of our train travel which caused a great deal of last minute stress and need to contact the emergency Kim Kim number. When we received our seat assignments, some were double booked with other passengers on the train. KimKim emergency help told me to contact Fjordtours, the company that orchestrates Norway in a Nutshell, which KimKim booked for us. This was surprising as I thought KimKim would contact them with any issues that arose. I would recommend flying from Oslo to Bergen and taking the train back to Oslo from Flam rather than taking the train both ways. It would have been helpful for our travel planners to suggest different options and the pros and cons of each. Overall, Norway is an amazingly picturesque country and we enjoyed the trip despite the hiccups.

Tricia created an exceptional trip for us that we enjoyed immensely. It was a remarkable trip for the following reasons:

1). We saw a variety of the ways in which contemporary Norwegian society functions - from the sunbathers (a lot of them!) and commuters on the Aker Brygge to the shoppers in central Oslo to the residents of Hamar, Lillehammer, Bergen and Alesund as they went about their daily lives. This immersion into Norwegian life helped us go beyond stereotypes and experience a social climate quite different from what we have in the States, (especially right now).

2). We had numerous opportunities to learn about Norwegian history. The outdoor museums - from the Norse Folk Museum in Oslo to the Maihaugen in Lillehammer and the Sunnmore in Alesund - were all very impressive and well done.

3). Our guides were fantastic! Stig, Ole, John and Randi - each one very enjoyable and knowledgeable. They added so much to our experience of place.

4). We had surprises at each location. The ethereal singing of the guide in the Domkirkeodden in Hamar might have been the most magical moment in the trip for me. We also enjoyed Ole taking us to the wooden hotel, the “Norwegian Stonehenge”, and the ski jump from the Olympics. Randi’s walk about Alesund, pointing out the Art Nouveau buildings was very informative. After seeing the Schotstuene (Hanseatic League building) and the Bergenhus Fortress in Bergen, John walked us to the University where we saw the beautiful botanical gardens and the Maritime Museum. Our trip to the Fram and KonTiki Museums and to the Norse Folkermuseum with Stig far surpassed our expectations.

5). The seamless transition from place to place with taxis arriving/waiting as necessary made us feel well cared for. It was also instructive to travel by both train and bus - another aspect of the immersion experience. We very much also enjoyed our night onboard the Havila Capella from Bergen to Alesund. It’s too bad the weather was rainy because I can only imagine how fantastic the view would have been under other conditions.

Food wise:
- The Venti Venti in Oslo was a lot of fun and we enjoyed the great people watching.
- The breakfast buffets at all of the hotels were excellent except at the Raddison Blu Airport Hotel where it was terrible.
- Eating at the Bro in Alesund was another fun experience. We had gone to the Fishery Museum earlier that day so I tried the dried cod dish because I thought the pairing (of the historical information and cuisine) would be interesting. The dessert - 3 kinds of ice cream - was among the best food we had on the entire trip.

So - in summary - we went from south (85’ heat) to north (55’); from urban to small city to rural; from plane to bus, train, taxi and ship - with 4 wonderfully informed and friendly guides enjoying lovely breakfast buffets that lasted us through the day and seeing many interesting sights. I can’t imagine a better time then than!

We had an amazing trip - 14 people with different needs , like rooms accommodations or dietary restrictions- and mathia was patient, always courteous, and ready to fix things when needed. We all loved him - and i bet he loved us back 😊

We were supposed to do this trip in 2020 so over the years I have dealt with a number of Kimkim people. All have been excellent and Tom was no exception. I found Kimkim online and had never heard of them. I normally plan our trips but Norway just seemed like a bridge too far. The 14 night trip was a perfect match for our kind of travel. Be warned though Norway is a big country!! Lofoten is crowded but a must see. Highly recommend utilizing Kimkim for your next holiday

In short, Mathia helped us plan the perfect trip suited just for us. We wanted to do a self-driving trip thru portions of Arctic Norway. He recommended wonderful and special places to stay and sights to see. We had some issues with weather that cancelled some of our activities and he immediately contacted us and responded with possible alternatives. He was not intrusive at all on our vacation, but you always knew he was behind the scenes and making sure all was ok. The best part is that during the planning of this trip we made several changes from the original itinerary and Mathia was so patient and willing to do whatever it took to try and make this trip special to us. If you work with Mathia please know you are in very good hands. We would 100% work with Mathia and KimKim again in the future.

Our trip to Norway this past June was absolutely amazing! Mathia worked with us to ensure our itinerary was smooth and connected us to fantastic guides and places to stay.....most importantly he navigated the ferry and train time tables to ensure we were on the correct boats/trains for our trip! Without his guidance we would not have connected with local guides like Stig...our guide when we visited Oslo. Stig was so knowledgeable and fun. He walked us around the city sharing the highlights of Oslo and small lesser known facts the while easily conversing and making us feel like his special guests...not tourists. We wanted to see as much as possible in Norway so after two days in Oslo we flew to the Lofoten Islands. Mathia booked us in a fantastic place....historic and charming...the Svinoya Roburer. We had excellent weather and toured the entire island chain under blue skies and sunshine. Epic views and enjoyed the beach under the midnight sun. Our next flight took us to Bergen. Once again Mathia connected us to John who expertly guided us through the beautiful town of Bergen, sharing the history and ensuring we got to experience the fantastic views that the city has to offer. Mathia booked us on the Norled ferry from Bergen to Balestrand. Balestrand was our favorite place we visited. Do not get me wrong....all of our locations were amazing...but the small village charm of Balestrand, the special Kvicknes hotel and our special tours there made our visit so special. We toured and tasted at the local Cidery. The tour and tasting was intimate and so very interesting. The cider was delicious. Mathia booked us with the ultimate tour guide in Norway, Tor! Another local born and raised in Balestrand, he knew everything about the town, the area and was the warmest funiest man we have met in a long time. He took us up a side fjord, stopping at farms, amazing waterfalls and of corse the glacier. Tor made Balestrand special!
Mathia then booked us on the famous Flam railway to head back to Oslo. It is rated one of the top train rides in Europe and it did not dissapoint.
Norway is beautiful. The people we met in Norway were very special. I would highly recommend a trip to Norway and I would highly recommend working with KimKim and Mathia to plan your visit. I hope to go back to Norway...if nothing else than to eat the delicious fish soup.

Mathia was very responsive to all emails and inquiries, and empathetic to a sudden pet illness that prevented my husband from going on the trip. He was very flexible in what he would schedule/book and what we could book on our own. All walking tours were excellent with Stig in Oslo and John in Bergen. Tor in Balestrand for the fjord boat tour is not to be missed. All very friendly and engaging guides. Will definitely use Kimkim in the future!

We felt the Fram day long, with many line ups, rushing crowd's and to many connections. The train going straight through from Oslo to Bergen would have been a better choice! Sort of redundant as we were cruising the coast of Norway

Mar was delightful to work with as she helped me plan our Norway trip. She was responsive & attentive to my requests. The work Mar did ahead of our trip to help with route planning and instructions for finding our way were so helpful. She was even available once during the trip when we had a question about our route.
The fjords we visited were just spectacular and we loved spending time in the small towns Mar selected for us. Aurland was probably our favorite, including the RIB boat ride in the fjord there. All of our rooms had great views —of the fjords and mountains, a pretty city view or a view of the harbor.
Fenne made the bookings for accommodations, experiences, transportation etc. and it was all taken care of perfectly.
I’m giving KimKim 5 stars for this trip, and I won’t hesitate to work with them again!

Fjord Safari on a RIB boat

Our guide and pilot, Eric, made this a great experience. Attentiveness to safety was impressive. Eric stopped at waterfalls and in front of small villages up on the mountain and shared interesting stories about the people/ locations. He also shared some Norwegian folklore about trolls that was amusing. He was super at his job and obviously enjoys the work. This was a fun excursion!

I was looking forward this concert and was not disappointed. The pianist for the week played masterfully and listening while taking in the the view out the front window of the concert hall was heavenly. The grounds are lovely. You can follow a pretty path through the woods down to the water; it’s very peaceful. Edvard Grieg’s home and the museum were full of interesting things.

My wife and I usually plan trips ourselves but I was short on time for planning our trip to Norway. Relying on kimkim and its Norway-based Ethical Travel partner greatly relieved the stress. After some initial guidance, our knowledgeable local specialist Tom Christer proposed an itinerary. We communicated back and forth a few times, with Tom providing clear answers to all questions, to refine the plan. The high point of our trip was a 4-night stay at a boutique inn called BesteBakken, in Hafslo. The owner personally hosted delicious family-style dinners and breakfasts where we had a chance to meet other travelers including quite native Norwegians. It was a great base for exploring the local region, including a glacier hike, a kayak day paddle, and a hike up Molden mountain on our own. Our family of 4 adults needed some rest as well as wonderful sights and that's what we got on this trip. Tom or others at Ethical Travel were available to answer questions during the trip, and rebooked us in advance when one boat tour was cancelled. I would not hesitate to use kimkim again.

The trip was just ok. The hike at Besseggen was a disaster because Christina failed to mention the necessary ferry. She only offered a guide (which you totally do not need and was $800, just needed info on the ferry - trust me you don’t need a guide, just the knowledge to catch the ferry). This ruined several days of our trip and almost ended up with physical harm. When questioned the next day I was told only by Christina had she mentioned it (when, I have no idea). But it was not anywhere in the final itinerary. Riddergarten was a lame town with little food choices. Like really bad food choices. Bestebakken in Hafslo was nice but definitely didn’t need 3 nights there. 2 would have been sufficient. Food here was quite good and we liked this place a lot. Loften Ullensvang had good bike ride but absolutely nothing to do second day. Did not need 3 nights here. 2 nights would have been more than enough. The food here was horrendous. Literally only the (very) overpriced mediocre hotel buffet or a pizza shop. I had wanted to go to Bergen and Lofoten but was told Bergen was boring and not enough time to go to Lofoten. I’m used to planning my own trips but ran out of time. I’m sworn off travel agents. I was not impressed with the final itinerary.

From the beginning, Ezdi was always available to help with the organisation of this trip then Fenne took over and also did an amazing job. Every aspect of the trip went very smoothly and this mustn’t have been easy as I had told them from the beginning that I wanted to see everything Norway had to offer. The guides and I kept communicating back and forth up to the very end. No other company could offer me an all encompassed tour of Norway and such good service as Kim Kim did. It was incredible, we made so many stops along the way from the very top of the mountains to the deepest valleys so we could take in the views. Back in the cold days of February this year, my spouse and I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Norway for a short time - and on short notice. Not being good at quickly making detailed plans to visit a new country for the first time without a car in the winter, we went with a recommendation to try kimkim. We are soooo glad that we did!

Tom transformed our desires for beautiful fjords, train travels, and a chance or two at northern lights into a fantastic itinerary of unique memorable experiences and splendid overnight stays in towns rich with history.

The arranged tours, travel, and lodging were all top-notch. Communication was great! The availability of the team's 24/7 phone assistance really helped put our minds at ease with the travel connections.

Kadri did a great job planning and organizing our trip thru the southern fjords of norway. She picked excellent hotels and scenic spots and active activities to do. We did want to ride the Rallervegan (sp?) bike trail which ahe thought started near Voss but actually started about 100 kilometers from Voss so that part of the trip didnt work out unfortunately as where our bikes were reserved and where the trail started were not even close at all.
We also had a major medical problem as i slipped on some rocks mountain biking and broke my leg but Rofu helped us make some changes on our remaining itinerary and we were able to “limp” along the rest of our trip. A little more knowledge and understanding of more adventurous activities like Via Ferratas and paragliding and hiking would have been helpful not to mention the Extreme sports festival in Vass in june would have been great to know about in advance.
Also a heads up to the Parking laws and heavy fines for violations and even minor speeding Violations would have been good as well.
Other than those issues we had a great trip and appreciate kimkims services

Mathia planned a trip that fit perfectly with our time. We saw city sights, village charm, and natural wonders. The hired guides were engaging and knowledgeable.

The selected Hotels were incredible - all of them. They were all at good locations, easy to walk to and from train, bus, ferry locations and easy to walk to other arranged excursions and centrally located near other attractions, restaurants and transportation, Thank you for considering my interests.

The arranged excursions were appropriate for each of the cities where I stayed.

Of particular note was the Sanden Pensonjat in Laerdal. The room was very nice, the host was very gracious, the breakfast was great and the quiet location was only 75 m from the bus stop. The small town did not have many amenities but was very enjoyable and suitable for overnight.

Also, to note, the taxi from the Ferry Terminal outside Stavanger was very expensive ($689 NOK), but it was appropriate for me since I was tired from the ferry and it was raining. There was a public bus that most travelers took to the city but it left later and only went as far at the bus terminal, so I would have had to walk in the rain or take a taxi to the hotel, So, your itinerary suggested the taxi from the Ferry Terminal to the hotel and that was the right choice for me, Thanks

Also, to note, The weather in Tromso was cold. I was prepared because I checked the weather conditions and brought warm clothes and rain gear (I have travelled the Canadian North!). I know the weather is not your responsibility but a advance notice of possible weather might be helpful to other travelers.

Tricia was crucial to the success of our trip in Norway. She was always available to tweak things to make them perfect, was a dream to work with and her suggestions for what to do on our own were perfect!

Every aspect from planning to the trip itself was incredible! Our trip planner, Christina, asked questions and got to know our family and what was important to us before planning. She then prepared an initial plan and asked for comments. She worked with us to meet our price point and then made many revisions and offered advice throughout the whole planning period. She planned so perfectly that our trip went amazingly smooth. It was such a nice convenience to have all of the accommodations and transportation booked in advance, and Christina put a lot of thought into our accommodations and their proximity to our modes of transportation, making our travel very easy. This trip was done solely on planes, trains, ferries, buses and a couple taxis. The tours she booked for us allowed us to see everything we wanted. Everyone from our tour guides to taxi drivers were so nice, accommodating and very knowledgeable. Our itinerary included Oslo, Aurland, Bergin, Alesund, Andalsnes and Trondheim as the main hubs, with cruises on the UNESCO fjords, trips on the Flam and Rauma railroads, and private tours to other destinations with many waterfall stops along the way. Although it was all wonderful, one highlight was the gondola ride in Andalsnes and dinner at Eggen restaurant at the top. Norway is a very beautiful country with diverse areas, awesome hikes, excellent art installations, living history museums, excellent restaurants, wonderful fjords and really nice people. We are very thankful to Christina for making this trip so amazing, comfortable and perfect for our family. We highly recommend using Christina and KimKim as a trip planner.

Hello, I will be honest in my review, and hopefully not too critical.
Overall our trip was fine but not outstanding. Part of that may be that we have always been fit and healthy, and now in our mid 70's we not as energetic or willing to accept annoyances.
Hotels....the 3 hotels we stayed in were nice hotels in general, and all had friendly, professional, and helpful staff. All breakfasts were good as well.
Our first hotel experience though, was challenging. Our assigned room at the Norge was the smallest room I can ever remember, and we were there for 5 nights. Our only other choice, which we opted for, was a much larger room with a pleasant view. This was in a handicap accessible wing on the ground floor with wide hallways which were used to store extra furniture. This, combined with food smells from the restaurant, and the stained carpet made for a less than appealing sense of arrival each time we came to our room. In addition, we had to pay $470 CAD extra to the hotel for the room.
It seems that all our hotels in Norway used the same company for interior room design. All were minimalist, with zero or only one drawer for clothes. This is unacceptable for stays of several days....no place for socks, underwear, PJ's, dirty clothes etc. It ends up with shoes and clothes strewn all over the place.
Regarding the guided tours, we were pleased,
Although we recognize much of Norway is about the water, we spent too much time on boats, even considering the one we missed. The ferry from Bergen to Stavanger was very nice. We went to the oil and gas museum in Stavanger, which was very interesting.
regarding you contact people, we started with Kristina, then over to Fenne, then to Rufo. Rufo was helpful in last-minute rescheduling of our Cornelius dinner.
I sent 2 messages requesting light bedding in our rooms. None of the hotels had the requests on file when we checked in, so we had to deal with that in various ways. The bedding issue was important to us, especially sing none of the hotel have air conditioning.
