What you'll do

Enjoy the Sierra Nevada Mountains surrounding Granada with a unique off-roading experience that combines beautiful scenery, light hiking, and cultural villages into one thrilling day. After your host picks you up in Granada, either at your hotel or a central location in the city, you'll start your drive into the surrounding countryside. With a 4WD safari-style vehicle, you get easier access to the region's mountainous terrain and better scenic views. The activity occurs in the culturally rich Las Alpujarras region, between the Sierra Nevadas and the Mediterranean Sea.

This unique region of Andalusia has a rich and diverse history, with influences from the Moors, who inhabited the area for several centuries, among other rulers. It's known for picturesque white villages and agricultural products, particularly almonds, figs, and grapes, as well as its traditional crafts, such as weaving and pottery. Because of its hilly environment, your host will share with you how the terraced farmland uses melting snow from the mountains for irrigation.

The first stretch of the drive takes you up to 8,000 feet (2,500 m) in elevation, tackling some of the Iberian Peninsula's highest mountain peaks. The views from the route are truly incredible, and you'll follow trails dating back centuries to when the Visigoths and Arabs ruled the area. Learn a bit about the history as you stop at hidden viewpoints and make your way through forested landscapes. Weather permitting, you'll travel deep into the rugged mountains and stop to enjoy a quick walk or two, finding dense forests and beautiful viewpoints.

Next, you'll head into the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park, where the peaks are a bit lower in elevation and where you'll find many of the area's famed villages. This is also where the Moors would draw spring water to bring back to the historic Albaicín neighborhood in Granada. For more recent history, your guide will also stop to show you a few old fortifications from the Spanish Civil War. And, of course, you'll continue to marvel at the views along the way. As a private excursion, your host is happy to cater the stops to your interests. However, some of the best villages are Capileira, Bubión, Trevélez, and Pampaneira.

For lunch, you'll stop in one of the most charming villages of the Las Alpujarras region, Capileira. The restaurant, along with the town, sits at 8,200 feet (2,500 m), so you'll dine along with panoramic views of the forested hills, valleys, and distant mountain peaks. Enjoy a traditional meal with your host as you hear more about the region, its history, and its cultural significance. After a full day exploring the area, your guide will take you back to Granada, either to the city center or your accommodation.
