Classic hotel in historic Bryggen offering a sauna, a gym, breakfast, and convenient access to Bergen's attractions

Overview

Home Hotel Bryggen is a historic brick property in the famous UNESCO-protected Bryggen district, tucked just off the harbor down a side street. Guests will find themselves mere steps away from classic points of interest like the Fløyen funicular, buzzy fish market, Fisketorget, and Torgallmenningen Square, not to mention the many restaurants, bars, cafés, and shops. Rooms have an understated elegance, featuring views of the street, courtyard, or mountains, while those on the higher-up floors (Junior suites) can enjoy harbor views. Amenities include a cozy bar, a traditional sauna, a fully equipped gym, and a complimentary, highly-rated buffet breakfast featuring a selection of sweet and savory dishes.

Pros
  • You'll be perfectly placed, literally steps away from Bryggen's main drag, surrounded by charming waterfront buildings that house shops, cafés, and the nearby fish market.
  • Even though Home Hotel Bryggen is right in the thick of the action, guests praise the property's lack of noise and welcome the quiet.
  • For families or larger groups, the Family room option sleeps up to five guests.
  • The chic sauna and well-appointed—though small—fitness center are a nice perk.
  • The breakfast buffet is highly praised and offers many sweet and savory options.
Cons
  • Although (underground) parking is available, the downtown garages are often packed, so finding a spot may require a bit of patience.

Authenticity

Opening in 1998, Home Hotel Bryggen merges historic charm with contemporary elegance. Nestled in the UNESCO-listed Bryggen district, the hotel's Hanseatic stone building reflects Bergen's rich history, offering a genuine taste of Norway's cultural heritage, a contrast to its modernized interiors.

Location

Located on Bryggen, the hotel places you in a prime location with direct access to the city's landmarks. You'll be spitting distance from the harbor (and ferry terminals), shops, cafés, and restaurants, where it's a 3-minute walk to access the Fløyen funicular, for example, or a 4-minute walk to the Fish Market. You'll find underground parking conveniently beneath the property, and a Flybussen airport bus stop around the corner.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Nine categories of rooms feature tasteful decor with cozy touches, upholstered bedframes, accent carpet atop hardwood floors, and a color palette of muted typical-of-Scandinavia tones (sage green, taupes, creams, and gray). Many rooms offer views of the street, courtyard, or mountains, while those on higher floors boast glimpses of the harbor. For an elevated experience, consider staying in a Junior Suite with access to a shared roof terrace. Family rooms sleep up to five guests, with interconnecting rooms for even larger groups. Tiled, somewhat dated, en suite bathrooms are appointed with Rituals products. There's also an elevator and accommodations for those with accessibility needs.

Amenities

Home Hotel Bryggen features a bar, a highly praised breakfast buffet (included), a fully equipped, though small, fitness center, and an attractive sauna. There's underground parking, though given its great location, you might find it tricky to source a spot. Meanwhile, a rooftop terrace offers nice views of the harbor, though only guests of certain Junior Suites have access.

Family-Friendliness

Family rooms can sleep up to five guests and offer interconnected rooms. In contrast, smaller families might prefer the Superior or Deluxe Double rooms (sleeps three) or the Deluxe Twin, accommodating four. The hotel provides cribs and extra beds at an added nightly rate. While the hotel doesn't offer specific children's amenities, its central location makes it easy for families to explore Bergen's attractions together.

Very convenient location just off the harbor. Our room on the 6th floor was huge. We were positively surprised to learn that the hotel offers a complimentary fika (sweets & tea) in the afternoon and even a buffet style dinner for all guests at 6pm. We used this to our advantage by having an early dinner and then go out into the bright summer evening to eat some more fish and desert near the harbor.

The breakfast buffet was great with lots of fresh choices, but quite crowded when it opened at 8.

On Saturday night the bar across the street was very noisy with locals partying until 3am, which affected my sleep a little, but then again i was happy to see the Norwegians celebrating the nice summer weather.

Overall a very solid hotel with character at a perfect location.

The centrality of this hotel was great as was the "family" room we stayed in. The included breakfast was amazing. The only downside was parking - garages are so tightly packed downtown! Yikes! Read more
