Elia Zampeliou Hotel, Chania

Charming adults-only boutique hotel with historical charm, harbor views, exquisite rooftop terrace, and modern amenities

Overview

Located in the middle of Chania's historic harbor, the Elia Zampeliou is an adults-only hotel that offers eight rooms with a mix of seaside and city views. This former house opened as a hotel in 2016 and includes original elements (like traditional stone-built ovens) combined with a simple modern design. The hotel is a good fit for couples or younger travelers hoping to be amid Chania's hubbub rather than those looking for peace and quiet.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • The location is right in the center of Chania's harbor: guests can enjoy sea views, waterfront strolls, and exploration of the Old Town all within seconds of leaving the hotel.
  • The design is nicer than a basic standard hotel, incorporating aspects from the original building, like stone arches in the rooms.
  • Guests can enjoy a drink or coffee on the rooftop, which overlooks Chania's historic harbor.
Cons
  • The hotel has no elevator, and several rooms have steps to reach the bed, so it isn't the best option for those with limited mobility.
  • No parking is available, and breakfast is served at a sister hotel nearby.
  • The hotel lacks simple in-room amenities, like a soap dish and conditioner.

Authenticity

The Elia Zampeliou was once a home and then was turned into a hotel in 2016, and its modern-day iteration has retained parts of that old building. The superior room, for example, has turned a former stone oven into a display area of various objects, while guests can have breakfast or coffee under the original arches in the cave-like breakfast room.

Location

The Elia Zampeliou is on Chania's historic harbor, and while its facade faces the sea, its main entrance leads right into Old Town. Those with cars can park five minutes away at Talos Square, while the hotel itself is perfect for anyone wanting to get their steps in. Reach the start of the walkway to the lighthouse on foot in about 15 minutes, or head in the opposite direction and get to Nea Chora beach in 15-20 minutes of walking.

Rooms & Bathrooms

There are eight rooms in the Elia Zampeliou. They can only be reached by stairs, as there's no elevator. Some sea-view rooms have balconies, so snag one of those to enjoy direct views of Chania's harbor. The superior room has no balcony and faces the city, which can get a little loud sometimes, so book a higher room if you're a light sleeper.

Amenities

The hotel lacks a pool, spa, or fitness center. The top amenity is a rooftop terrace with views over the harbor—it's a great place to watch the sunset. The Elia Zampeliou Hotel isn't a good choice for those with limited mobility.

Family-Friendliness

Since it's an adults-only hotel, the Elia Zampeliou is best for couples or solo travelers; the rooms comfortably sleep two people at the most.

This hotel was right on the water with amazing views from the room and garden rooftop. Walking out the front door of the hotel put you right in the middle of Old Town with so much going on, everything you could want was there.

We had a harbor-view room - WOW! The sunrises and sunsets were gorgeous.

The room itself - very small by US standards (but common for Europe) - was fine. Our only complaints were gigantic decorative pillows that took up WAY too much space in a small room, the steps up to the bathroom, and a loud, automatic bathroom fan that we could not control or turn off.

Be aware that this hotel is part of a large group of boutique hotels all owned/managed by a larger company. As such, our breakfasts (very delicious and ample) were a block away in one of the other hotels. Also the staff in the "lobby" (tiny reception area) work at many different locations so they aren't always totally familiar with all the details of the Elia Zampeliou. Also, one staff person had a bit of an "attitude." She was at the front desk many times during our stay and was never friendly to us. She seemed quite bothered by anything we asked. We tried to avoid her when possible. Guess people like that are everywhere.

One reception desk person was notably unfriendly (with an "attitude"). Another was quite odd. Another didn't seem familiar with the hotel's laundry schedule.

I'm a kimkim staff member and I was on a work trip when I stayed at Elia Hotel.
The design is great, and the location is perfect for walking. I really enjoyed my stay. The sister hotel serves decent breakfast, and there are so-so many restaurants nearby. Even the smallest rooms are pretty spacious, clean, and well-maintained. The staff is also very responsive.

Elia Zampeliou Hotel in Chania was truly special with its charming setup, a wonderful room with an unexpected step inside which caught me off guard at first but was not really a problem. The views were stunning as it was close to the ocean.
