Sonder Casa Luz, Barcelona

Kimkim team favorite · 5.0 (1 reviews) · Standard
Trendy Barcelona boutique hotel with minimalist rooms, a family-friendly atmosphere, and rooftop dining

Overview

Trendy and cool, Sonder Casa Luz is a quick walk from La Rambla, Passeig de Gràcia, and Plaça de Catalunya. This boutique hotel has recently undergone significant renovations and offers spacious rooms with earth tones, minimalist decor, and comfy furnishings. The biggest highlights are the locally sourced breakfast buffet, Catalan restaurant, and bar—all on the rooftop, which occasionally hosts live music.

Pros
  • Travelers can complete check-in, request fresh towels, and get dinner recommendations via smartphone.
  • Enjoy the delicious breakfast buffet on the hotel's top floor, complete with an outdoor terrace and city views.
  • The rooms are surprisingly spacious rooms for a small boutique hotel.
  • There's live music on the rooftop some nights.
Cons
  • The street-facing rooms tend to be noisy since the hotel borders a busy street and square.
  • Although the breakfast is worth the wait, it doesn't start until 8:30 am.
  • Sonder Casa Luz doesn't have a spa, pool, or fitness center.

While visiting hotels in Barcelona, I made my base at Sonder Casa Luz. Even after seeing the luxury properties, I felt thankful to return to my oasis in a quiet, minimalist boutique hotel. The rooftop terrace is fantastic and where I enjoyed a few meals, devouring everything at the homemade breakfast buffet (and snagging a seat with views of Tibidabo). I also spent a night tasting tapas off the dinner menu—highly recommended. The live music was a nice way to end the evening, but the staff's kindness is what pulled it all together for me!

Authenticity

Casa Luz is an excellent standard option if you want to explore Barcelona's younger, trendier vibe. Upon arrival, a neon sign advertising the property's cool rooftop terrace and restaurant/bar greets you. In the rooms, the minimalist decor reflects the Catalunyan countryside's serenity.

Location

A prime location, Casa Luz straddles three hip neighborhoods (the Gothic Quarter, El Raval, and Eixample) while steps away from hotspots like Plaça de Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia, and La Rambla. You can see Plaça Universitat (home to a major metro stop) from the hotel's entrance.

Rooms & Bathrooms

As part of the Sonder group, Casa Luz maintains the same aesthetic as the company's other properties: minimalist, light wood, and touches of black and brown. Rooms are simple yet clean, spacious, and modern. All have balconies either facing the street, which can get a little noisy, or an inner courtyard (which you can request for a quieter stay). Family rooms feature bunk beds, and upgraded units have private terraces.

Amenities

The hotel doesn't have a pool, spa, or fitness center, but the sixth-floor restaurant space is often repurposed (outside of meal times) for yoga and fitness activities. Sonder Casa Luz is a wheelchair-accessible hotel, with elevators and special wheelchair access available if necessary. The property prides itself on its rooftop terrace with a restaurant and bar, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner for purchase or a place to lounge and listen to occasional live music. The terrace closes at midnight.

Family-Friendliness

Sonder Casa Luz welcomes children of all ages but doesn't offer child-specific amenities. Cribs are available; extra beds aren't. There isn't a children's menu, but the hotel does offer kid-friendly meals upon request. The best room option for families is the Quadruple Single Room, with four twin beds available (two are bunks). The hotel is stroller-friendly.

Other Highlights

The property's biggest highlight is undoubtedly its rooftop terrace restaurant. The breakfast buffet served here contains natural ingredients; you can enjoy it in the morning sunshine with city views. The restaurant also serves lunch and dinner, staying open late for live music and nightcaps. The staff is exceptionally kind and might top off your cava with a wink!

Casa Luz is a standard hotel in Europe, but the location is incredible. Our room was on a very busy street, but the room itself was perfectly quiet. The shower in the room was incredible. The room was very clean, and the beds very comfortable. The hotel has a beautiful rooftop restaurant to enjoy. The location made walking in Barcelona easy and enjoyable.
