Pros

• You'll be right on Playa Hermosa, enjoying direct access to the beach from the property and ocean views.

• The property's pool is simple yet relaxing and open 24/7, so you can take a dip even at midnight. 
• All rooms feature a mini fridge and microwave.
• The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, though you'll be within walking distance of other nearby eateries if you'd like to dine offsite.

Cons

• You can enjoy breakfast on the property, but keep in mind that it's not included in the room rate.
• The rooms are comfortable but a little outdated and feel a bit dark, which doesn't quite match the bright and warm Costa Rican vibes. 
• The front desk is only open from 6 am to 10 pm (but if arriving late or leaving early, the security will assist you).

New owners recently bought the hotel, so stay tuned regarding updates, renovations, and securing that authentic feel. The hotel has lots of plans in the works, including updating the pool and restaurant, adding balconies to more rooms, and ensuring that all windows can open to provide a Costa Rican coastal breeze. 

Location

Hotel El Velero is beachfront, tucked between the sands of Playa Hermosa and Calle Playa Hermosa. You can stroll down the shore or along the main street to reach various cafés, bars, and restaurants. But to get out of the town and explore the area, you'll want to rent a car or hire a transfer.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The hotel is fairly small, with just two floors and 22 rooms. Units are simple, with two queens or one king, and the basics, though all have microwaves and minifridges. Only two rooms have balconies, so you might want to book early if you'd like outdoor space. If you need to spread out, guests can access a small communal lounge on the second floor.

Wildlife

It's possible to see tropical birds around the hotel, but it's not common to see a wide variety of wildlife.

Amenities

Hotel El Velero has one small pool at the center of the hotel. There's a small deck with lounge chairs beside it. The beach is just steps away, and activities like snorkeling, deep sea fishing, hiking, and turtle nest tours can be arranged at the hotel. There's no gym or spa on-site. There are a few accessible rooms on the ground level. 

Family-Friendliness

Hotel El Velero welcomes children, although there = are no kids' menus, babysitting services, cribs, or cots. The grounds aren't particularly stroller-friendly, either. The Double Queen Room is the best room for those with children because it offers the most sleeping space. There's a small extra charge for each child, regardless of age.

Other Highlights

There's one open-air restaurant at Hotel El Velero. It has a full bar and overlooks the beach and pool. The restaurant's global cuisine focuses on local ingredients, Costa Rican specialties, and American favorites like nachos, tacos, and chicken wings. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served a la carte.
