Kapari Natural Resort, Santorini

Luxury
Unique cave rooms blending earthy style and sustainable practices in a family-run hotel with a fantastic restaurant

Overview

In 2015, this family-run adults-only boutique hotel in Imerovigli became the only Greek entry on National Geographic's list of Unique Lodges of the World, thanks to maintained local traditions and customs. This is most clear in its 14 warm and earthy cave suites, five of which are built in 300-year-old former cave homes. Families with older kids or groups can book the five units of the private residence, while all guests can enjoy the hotel's infinity pool and a fantastic restaurant that works with a farm nearby to create local specialties.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • The family-run aspect brings a level of warmth and hospitality that makes your stay feel more personalized and considerate.
  • The earthy aesthetic creates an atmosphere that's romantic and cozy, a departure from other more starkly decorated places.
  • All of the suites are cave rooms, which is great for anyone looking for a unique take on a traditional experience in Santorini.
Cons
  • Most of the suites don't have private outdoor space, so book the Up & High option for a personal terrace.
  • The adults-only policy means only guests 14 and above are welcome; it may be a better option for couples or groups of friends.

Authenticity

The current owner of the Kapari Natural Resort transformed his parents' 1970s vacation home into a place that bears the distinction of being Greece's only entry on National Geographic's now-discontinued list of Unique Lodges of the World. Perhaps what got this hotel on that list is exactly that: a sense of history and homage, as the hotel preserves both the heritage of Santorini and the family that grew up here. The restaurant works with a nearby farm to get seasonal produce for local dishes, while the staff treats you like family to add to the overall feeling of warmth.

Location

Emerging almost organically from the cliff itself, Kapari Natural Resort looks over Skaros Rock in Imerovigli. Walk to the smattering of restaurants and shops in Imerovigli in just five minutes or drive to nearby Thera in 10 minutes. You can also get to Oia in 25 minutes to watch the sunset or explore the ancient ruins of Akrotiri in 30 minutes. Both volcanic beaches of the Red Beach and Perissa are 30 minutes away by car.

Rooms & Bathrooms

All 14 rooms are cave-style, although five of them date back 300 years as former houses of fishermen and others living in the area. There are no straight lines to be found here, as all of the rooms incorporate the curves of the rock with warm tones and organic materials to create a space that's earthy and grounded. The Up & High suite is the only one to have its own private terrace, while other suites have Jacuzzis and spa baths built in stone. The room sizes are ideal for couples, but larger parties of up to 15 people can book all five units of the Private Residence, which includes a courtyard and outdoor whirlpool.
