Introducing Italy

With unparalleled culture, art, architecture, food, and wine, Italy offers the quintessential European vacation. For travelers who haven't yet made it to Italy, it's time to see what la dolce vita is all about. And for those that have, it's time to say ancora!

When is the best time to visit?
Italy is incredible year-round, but since it's an internationally iconic place to visit, expect crowds at the premier tourist destinations from spring through fall, and during holidays when people are more likely to travel. If you have the flexibility, try and visit during the less crowded winter and early shoulder seasons. Learn more

Where should I go in Italy?
Rome, Florence, and Venice belong on every traveler's bucket list. Visitors with a little more time should also see the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Naples, Milan, the Cinque Terre, and Sicily—the list of places to visit in Italy has no end. Learn more

How many days do I need?
A week is barely enough to hit the main attractions in Italy, but it is doable. Stay for up to a month or more to truly savor the whole experience as well as the food and wine. And no matter how long you stay, you'll surely want to return for your next visit. Learn more

Getting around Italy
Trains are a great option for trips between Italy's cities, such as Florence to Rome and Milan to Venice. Driving isn't always straightforward, but it's still a great choice if you feel comfortable taking the wheel along Italy's Autostrada and curvy roads. Other options include domestic flights and ferries. Learn more

While the process was quite simple, and the local specialist appeared to be very knowledgeable having had time to sit and reflect there are many things that were in retrospect quite frustrating. First I am not sure how a tour of the Ufitzi in Florence was not recommended as part of our itinerary. We spent four days in Florence, and it for sure should have been one of them. Second we were talked out of staying in Positano for New Years Eve because nothing would be open, only to discover they host a huge New Years Eve beach party so that information was simply false, and Positano remains one of the best two hour segments we had in our two weeks in Italy. Three days there would have been the best possible end to our adventure. Instead we spent New Years Eve enclosed in a restaurant with no views, and a ridiculously expensive pre-fix menu half of which my older daughter did not eat-which I was told was not alterable while tables around us had altered options. In my past experiences with Kim Kim the local specialist has had so much insight and has connected us with local guides who were simply amazing. Our Florence City Guide was amazing, as was our Coliseum guide-both so knowledgeable and passionate about the places we were seeing. Our Rome sunset tour guide was a nightmare-we did not get to go into the Parthenon which was supposed to be included, and when asked for a recommendation for food for my children who needed a snack she said she was on a diet and did not really eat out. It was truly unbelievable. I hope one day to go back to Italy, but this was not the magical trip we had imagined.

This was TERRIBLE. The guide was awful and we did not get to enter the Parthenon as advertised because of some change of rule in guides being allowed in (I am still unclear on why a time change was not made to allow the tour to be what we were supposed to be having.) Additionally, when asked for a good place to grab a snack during the three hour walking tour the guide spent 10 minutes talking about her diet, and patting her stomach. When asked again she indicated she was not sure. We ended up a terrible tourist cafe which given we paid a guide was RIDICULOUS. The guide makes all the difference in these types of tours, and this was a failure of the travel agency.

This was a bit of disaster. It became a tour of 1000 churches when we were really interested in the Jewish History of Rome. Our guide was very good, but this was a bit of a nightmare. It was SOOOO crowded, and the guide was in a bit of a hurry. My teens would have liked to spend more time looking at the animal sculptures and she kind of rushed them through to walk through endless rooms of tapestries they had no interest in. The Sistine chapel was shoulder to shoulder-and not quiet, despite the photography prohibition people were taking photos on their phones and in general it just ruined the awe. Nothing however could ruin the awe of the basilica and Michelangelo's pieta.

Giovanni, our guide for the Colosseum and Roman Forum, was a stand out - he was personable and highly engaging, with lots of funny and exciting stories, providing lots of historical, cultural and personal snippets that were delightful, making the tour continuously interesting. I thought the choice of the time of the tours were mostly right (early morning), although we had to make a request to shift one tour to an earlier time to avoid the hot afternoon. We had a great transfer to the airport in Florence, but wished that the one from the airport in Rome was a bit more personable (and on-time).

Everything went smoothly - all organized accommodation, transfers, and activities happened on time without a hitch. Overall, a wonderful adventure that hit the right spot for the family.

Jason, it was so wonderful helping you build a fun adventure in Italy for your family!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review!

I’m especially happy to hear that the itinerary struck the right balance between experiences the kids could enjoy, like the scavenger hunt and gelato-making, and opportunities for you and your wife to take in Italy’s incredible history and culture. I'm sure revisiting the spots you enjoyed after your wedding, was wonderful with the kids! And I’m glad Giovanni made such a memorable impression; guides like him can really bring places like the Colosseum and Roman Forum to life! I personally had a former professor and it doesn't sound like as much fun as you had, but I was also stuck in the afternoon heat LOL!

I also appreciate you sharing the constructive feedback regarding the tour timing and airport transfer in Rome. I’m always grateful for those details - we will use them to improve the experience for future travelers by collaborating on a solution with that partner.

Thank you again for trusting me with your trip, and I hope Italy won’t be your last family adventure with kimkim!

Best regards,
Alex
