Menorca attracts a diverse range of visitors, and as it is a little more laid back than the other Balearic Islands, several affordable accommodation options exist. The only restriction is that Menorca's best standard hotels are in a city, either Mahón or Ciutadella. You'll have to stretch your budget to stay on the beach or in a rural environment, but these cities still provide a lot of entertainment and make great hubs for exploring the island.

With Hotel Hevresac, you get both affordable and eco-friendly, as it's one of Menorca's biosphere hotels, earning the label through its initiatives with sustainability and local culture. There are just eight rooms, all featuring a simple design with antique and/or artistic furnishings. Neutral tones blend well with colorful flooring and textiles, and some rooms have beamed ceilings, original mosaics, or stone walls. Suites add terraces and plenty of space, making them a good choice for small groups or families.

There aren't many amenities here, but you can enjoy a breakfast buffet with local, organic, and fair-trade products from small retailers. And though you won't find TVs in the rooms, you can request a tablet anytime during your stay. You'll also be near Mahón's main sites and can borrow beach umbrellas, books from the property's library, and yoga mats. Each room comes with glass water bottles with filtered and remineralized water that you can refill as much as you'd like for free. Learn more

Another eco-friendly lodging in Menorca, San Miguel Hotel, is a good standard option in the center of Mahón, just 10 minutes on foot from the main sites and city port. Rooms are straightforward yet comfortable, with a color palette channeling the island's environment with neutral tones, earthy hues, and a few blues and greens for the sea. Superior rooms feature whirlpool bathtubs, and suites add a private terrace with sun loungers or a living room with a sofabed—suitable for families or groups.

The on-site restaurant offers several different dining options, as you can enjoy your breakfast or dinner on the outdoor terrace with rooftop views, in the indoor lounge, or on the covered patio. During the day, guests can also use these spaces to relax. Or, if you're around in the early evening, you can snack on tapas and sip smoothie cocktails starting at 6:00 pm. Learn more

Sodium Hotel

Enjoy your own private patio (photo courtesy of Sodium Hotel)

Sodium Boutique Hotel sits directly across from Plaça d'Artrutx, a lively square leading into Ciutadella's historic Old Town center. The hotel is in a 19th-century manor house with a chemistry theme, preserving some of the building's historical details, like its beamed ceilings and mosaic floors, and creating a relaxing space that honors Menorca's tranquil, natural atmosphere.

Each room has a private outdoor space and an element as a name, so you can stay in the Sodium room and enjoy its simple, relaxed vibe and furnished terrace. Or, opt for the Caesium room with its open floor plan, large glass sliding door, and private patio. And the Rubidium room has its own rooftop terrace, so you can enjoy the bright reds of Ciutadella's rooftops. Overall, the units are straightforward but a step up from the hotel's sister property, Cheap & Chic. In the morning, the hotel serves a simple breakfast of local goods. Learn more

Simple, bright rooms (photo courtesy of Petit Hotel 5 Fars)

Petit Hotel 5 Fars is a relaxed, straightforward hotel in Ciutadella's Old Town, set in a 19th-century townhouse with plenty of historical features in the rooms and common areas. The location is exceptionally central and on a charming street, and all the main sites are within walking distance. Though there aren't any amenities here, you can still enjoy local products for breakfast and sit under an arched stone ceiling in the building's cellar.

Simple and straightforward, the hotel's five rooms channel the building's history with exposed beams, stone ceilings, and/or tile flooring. Suites add seating areas and some rooms offer private terraces, with the Cavalleria Room featuring a fantastic rooftop terrace with city views. The bathrooms are clean and modern but small in the standard room tier. Learn more

Hotel Romantico 5 Sentidos

Hotel Romántico Los 5 Sentidos is a reasonably basic property offering a comfortable place to stay and enjoy breakfast in Ciutadella. A 10-minute walk takes you to the city's main sites, or a five-minute drive gets you to the beach, though keep in mind you'll be at a busy intersection. Hoping to give guests the whole Menorcan experience, the hotel channels the five senses into its rooms and common areas. The owners want you to understand how Menorca feels, sounds, looks, smells, and tastes, and they do so with the property's room decor and design, plus daily breakfast and a few experiences.

Each room has its sensory theme. For example, the olfactory room (sense of smell) has a window opening up to a fragrant orange tree, and the view room (sense of sight) offers glimpses of the city from its bathroom window. Though the theme is cute and thoughtful, the rooms don't feel much different from one another and offer relatively simple furnishings, designs, and comfort. As a unique perk, they all provide heated flooring, which is nice when traveling during the cooler months. Learn more
