Free Beach Day in Romanos, Olympia

Relax with a leisurely beach day near the coastal town of Pylos (also known as Navarino).

Overview

Relax with a leisurely beach day near the coastal town of Pylos (also known as Navarino). “Sandy Pylos” is how Homer refers to the Kingdom of Nestor in "The Odyssey." And although archaeologists can't quite specify Ancient Pylos' location, it's believed to sit somewhere along the coast between Chrissi Akti and Voidokilia. Today, you'll find plenty of options to enjoy the beautiful sandy shores in western Peloponnese.

Many beaches in this region offer ideal spots for sunset and unspoiled nature home to sea turtles. Among others, top choices are Romanos Beach & Petrochori Beach. On one side (Petrochori), you'll find dunes with rocks and deep water. Some of the dunes may be covered with white sea lilies, a protected species found in western Peloponnese. There, you will find the traditional fish tavern “Grigoris - Maradona” and the restaurant beach bar “Ammothines”, both with great sea views.

Tip: Close to Petrohori and Romanos is the small village of Tragana with a beautiful square offering unique views. You'll enjoy landscapes of silver olive groves stretching from Paleokastro to the Gulf of Navarino, the famous Gialova Lagoon, and glimpses of the Golden Coast and the sea.
