Beach Day at Navarino in the Peloponnese

Mati beach Messenia
Relax with a leisurely beach day near the coastal town of Pilos (also known as Navarino). “Sandy Pylos” is how Homer refers to the Kingdom of Nestor in "The Odyssey." And although archaeologists can't quite specify Ancient Pylos' location, it's believed to sit somewhere along the coast between Chrissi Akti and Voidokilia. Today, you'll find plenty of options to enjoy the beautiful sandy shores in western Peloponnese.

Many beaches in this region offer ideal spots for sunset and unspoiled nature home to sea turtles. It's a great spot for a photo tour! You may even see baby turtles coming out from their nests for the long journey to the sea! Depending on your personal preferences, here are a few recommendations for excellent beaches:

  • Mati (or Chrissi Akti meaning Golden Coast). Here you'll find amenities ideal for families, including two beach bars. One offers a pool, sunbeds, playground, and several restaurants and cafes. The other provides a more relaxed environment with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a restaurant serving Greek meze (similar to appetizers or tapas). You can also arrange lessons for watersports like kite surfing and windsurfing.
  • Romanos Beach. Close to the villages of Romanos and Petrohori, this beach offers a few amenities, including a restaurant, bar, sunbeds, umbrellas, and a playground. On one side, you'll find dunes with rocks and deep water. Some of the dunes may be covered with white sea lilies, a protected species found in western Peloponnese. The restaurant serves exceptional dishes and offers a beautiful view of the Ionian Sea.
    • Close to Petrohori and Romanos is the small village of Tragana with a beautiful square offering unique views. You'll enjoy landscapes of silver olive groves stretching from Paleokastro to the Gulf of Navarino, the famous Gialova Lagoon, and glimpses of the Golden Coast and the sea.
  • Almirolaka Beach. If you're looking for more wild, remote beaches without amenities, follow the dirt road leading from the beach of Petrohori to the cemetery of Saint Nicholas (Mnimata). The road continues to Almirolaka Beach and up the hill to Prophet Elias Church, overlooking the entire coast and Voilokilia Beach.
