Arkadi Hotel, Chania

Standard
64 basic rooms to rest and grab some breakfast in Chania’s city center before heading out for the day.

Overview

The family-run Arkadi Hotel offers a standard experience in Chania’s city center. The hotel opened in the 1980s and was renovated in 2021. The 64 rooms here differ primarily in their views, as all are the same size and have balconies. The location is perfect for those who want the option of exploring Old Town, the new city, or both and works for those on short tours or who are just looking for a place to crash while they venture out into Crete.

Pros
  • The location is great for those who want to be close to Old Town but stay in a more local, less touristy area. Old Town is just a few minutes away by foot, while those who want to get away from the crowds can find what they need in the city of Chania.
  • Soundproof windows effectively keep out the noise of traffic on the streets downstairs.
  • All of the rooms have balconies here, which is a boon for summer guests and those who want some fresh air. The difference is in the view, so book a room based on your preference of seeing the harbor or not.
  • The hotel is open year-round, which makes it a possible option for those visiting Chania in the low season.
Cons
  • While the hotel was renovated in 2021, the rooms still feel a bit bare and basic. However, for those who just need a place to lay their head and grab some breakfast, the Arkadi can do the trick.
  • The hotel does have working soundproof windows but in the high season, the harbor view rooms can still get a bit loud with the city noise and crowds below. Book an interior facing room for some more peace and quiet.

Authenticity

The current manager, Evita, inherited the hotel from her father and two uncles, who built it back in the ‘80s and passed it down to their kids. It has a family-run feel to it, as you talk to Evita and see how involved she is with the place and knows it inside out. The location also situates it in Chania of the modern era, as it’s just above the edge of Old Town, so it has a different and more local energy than places you’ll find in the historic center.

Location

The Arkadi is located in the Chania city center, a few blocks above the edge of Old Town, which is a five-minute walk away. The bus station is a minute or two away as well, which is convenient for those who don’t want to rent a car. The historic harbor is less than 10 minutes walking while you can reach the beginning of the path to the lighthouse in less than 15. The closest beach of Nea Chora is also a 15-minute walk or a short 7-minute drive.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The 64 rooms of the Arkadi are all the same size and include balconies, so the difference here is in the view. You can choose an Old Town harbor view, which is picturesque but can get quite loud in the summer. Folks looking for something a bit quieter may be better off with an interior room that doesn’t face the city. The rooms themselves are quite basic as far as features and design and they include some amenities like toiletries, a safe, and coffee and tea makers upon request.
