Athens Cypria Hotel, Athens

4.4 (18 reviews) · Upscale
Comfortable modern hotel with renovated rooms, a rooftop bar and restaurant with Acropolis views, and a convenient city center location

Overview

Convenience is a keyword at Athens Cypria Hotel; this modern property's location puts guests just steps from Syntagma Square and within easy walking distance of the Acropolis and the historic Plaka neighborhood. Rooms are somewhat nondescript but freshly renovated and comfortable, with options for private balconies and adjoining or family rooms. Other amenities include a rooftop bar with spectacular Acropolis views and a relaxed ground-floor café serving breakfast.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • The hotel's location puts you just steps from Syntagma Square and the pedestrian Ermou Street, with sites like the Acropolis within easy walking distance.
  • Air-conditioned rooms are neutral and modern, with options for sunny balconies or Acropolis views.
  • The rooftop bar and restaurant serves dinner and drinks (with views of the Parthenon lit up at night), and a ground-floor café offers a hearty breakfast buffet with American and Greek-style options.
Cons
  • The hotel's location just off Athens' most central square means you can hear street noise in some rooms.
  • There's no parking on-site, but you'll have easy access to excellent public transport links at Syntagma Square.

Authenticity

The Athens Cypria Hotel has been around since 1998, but extensive 2017 renovations brought this handy city center spot up-to-date with a fresh makeover. While you won't find much in the way of character in the standard, midrange property, the bright, modern common areas pull in some local themes with large classical murals, and the rooms are fresh, clean, and comfortable. The real draw here is the location and the views: it doesn't get much more central and convenient than the address just steps from Syntagma Square, and the rooftop terrace offers dining and drinks with a picture-perfect aspect over the Acropolis.

Location

You'll find the hotel's entrance down a narrow alley of shops and cafés, just off the bustling pedestrian artery of Ermou Street. The city's central Syntagma Square is just a 2-minute stroll east, and you can reach the Acropolis on foot in under 20 minutes. Historic Plaka and the bars and restaurants of Psiry are both within a 10-minute walk. Excellent transport links are on your doorstep at Syntagma, where you can catch the metro to the airport in under 40 minutes, but this isn't a great spot for travelers with a car: there's no parking on-site, and paid lots in this part of town tend to be crowded and expensive.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The hotel's 115 air-conditioned rooms are recently renovated, giving them a clean and contemporary (though somewhat nondescript) style. Pale laminate floors and soft colors keep the decor neutral, and most rooms feature balconies, some with Acropolis views. Bathrooms are compact but modern, with rain-style showers. Economy and Standard rooms are the most basic; for a bit more space and style, upgrade to an Executive Double with a balcony. Triple and Connecting options are available for groups of 3-4, while the Junior Suite offers the best Acropolis views plus a terrace and seating area.

Amenities

The hotel's rooftop Acropolis View Bar is a real highlight, offering standout views of the Acropolis and a menu of light Mediterranean fare alongside wine and cocktails. Downstairs, you'll find an extensive breakfast buffet of both American and Greek-style classics in the ground-floor café, where you can also grab casual drinks and snacks throughout the day and into the evening. There's a small but modern fitness room available to guests, and all floors are accessible by elevator (though the rooftop garden area isn't wheelchair accessible).

Family-Friendliness

Families are welcome at the Athens Cypria Hotel. Connecting and Triple rooms can accommodate up to four people, with options for rollaway beds and cribs. Kids aged six and below stay for free, and an in-room babysitting service is available for an extra fee. The restaurant offers a kids' menu, and the buffet breakfast has plenty of options to satisfy young appetites. The hotel's central location makes it a popular base for family explorations of Athens.

Hotel was very clean but had extremely small elevators. And the rooftop bar next door played extremely loud techno music until after 1am, so I had to sleep with ear plugs. Breakfast buffet was incredible. Hotel staff was very accommodating. Read more

Great location in downtown Athens. Felt very safe. The elevator to get up to our room on the sixth floor was about as big as a closet. Only three people could fit in there or one person with luggage. Extremely claustrophobic, which caused me to take the stairs up six flights instead of getting into that tiny tiny elevator. The buffet was amazing as an introduction to Greek breakfast cuisine. I was even able to make Greek coffee over hot sand, which was very traditional and memorable. ... Read more

View of the Acropolis in Parthenon was total bonus. I’m giving it 3 stars because of the elevator.

We had a nice quiet stay here. We had two rooms adjoining by a private hallway, which was very nice. It is an older hotel but has nice updates.
