Chania Inn, Chania

Kimkim team favorite · Standard
Quaint waterfront guesthouse with individually designed bohemian suites, harbor views, and proximity to local attractions

Overview

With a prime location on the harbor of Chania's Old Town, the Chania Inn has rooms that face the Egyptian lighthouse. This guesthouse has just two rooms—one double and one family suite—which feature the building's original stone walls and bright, modern furniture. The real benefit of staying here is the view; you can wake up and sleep looking out at the harbor. That makes this hotel a good option for travelers who want to stay somewhere that offers basic amenities in a more elevated space in Old Town.

Pros
  • The location is almost right in the center of the harbor, which makes it perfect for anyone wanting to explore Old Town or gaze out at the spectacular view of the sea and lighthouse.
  • Personal touches, like handwritten notes welcoming guests and typical Greek snacks, help make this guest house feel more like a home.
  • The hotel's owners also run a restaurant on the ground level with water views.
Cons
  • Like many buildings in Chania's Old Town, this one doesn't have an elevator, so it's unsuitable for those with limited mobility.
  • There are no common spaces for guest use.
  • The prime location means the area can get quite busy during the high season.

Authenticity

The building of the Chania Inn dates back to the 17th century, but unlike other places in the area, it doesn't have a special history (that we know of). But this building is very much a part of the history of Chania, as its location allows guests to experience all of the Old Town's past. The Egyptian lighthouse, 17th-century mosque, and Venetian fortress walls are all within steps of the hotel.

Location

You can't get a much better location than the Chania Inn's. Situated directly on the harbor, the Chania Inn offers easy and quick access to various city sites: the lighthouse, the fortress, and the cobblestoned streets of Chania's old center are all within a few minutes walking of the hotel. Cars aren't allowed in the historic center, but Talos Square, which offers free parking just outside the harbor, is about five minutes away on foot.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The Chania Inn only has two rooms, but the rooms are large. The double seaside room is the standard option for couples or solo travelers. Elements like a cozy armchair and a small balcony overlooking the lighthouse make it feel like more than just your run-of-the-mill hotel room. The rooms incorporate both the modern and historical, as they retain original aspects of the building, like stone arches that lead into the bathroom. The other option is a sea-view family room, which is comprised of two connecting rooms. This family option—made up of an open-plan suite and a second room with no view—includes features like rich wooden beams on the ceiling and a mural on the wall. Both options are ideal for travelers who want to be at the center of the city and aren't looking for extra amenities like common spaces.

Amenities

There's no pool or hot tub at the Chania Inn. There's no rooftop terrace, restaurant, spa, fitness center, or other communal area. Chania Inn is unsuitable for those with limited mobility, as there are stairs that lead up to the hotel floor, and since it's a protected building, there's no elevator.

Family-Friendliness

Children over a year old are welcome to stay at the Chania Inn and are only charged once they're over 18. Cots/cribs for children under two years old can be provided for free if requested when booking. Families may want to book the Open-Plan Suite and Internal Double Room together. Due to its protected state, the building has no elevator, so it's not stroller-friendly.

Other Highlights

Although there's no on-site restaurant, the Lithos Restaurant is owned by the same people on the property's ground floor. Breakfast isn't included in the price, but guests get a discount on their full Cretan breakfast. The restaurant serves Cretan cuisine from 9 am to 12:30 am, and it has a lovely terrace that overlooks the waterfront.
