Secluded lodge with renovated suites, a gourmet restaurant, guided night walks, and panoramic views

Overview

Cloud Forest Lodge is located on a hilltop overlooking the cloud forests of Monteverde, offering a secluded setting within easy reach of nearby Santa Elena. After extensive renovations, the all-suite retreat feels bright, comfy, and trendy, with an on-site restaurant that offers gourmet dining with views of the Nicoya Gulf during sunset. The focus here is on conservation, and guests can enjoy spotting the plentiful wildlife from dedicated viewing platforms and embarking on guided night walks to explore the forest's nocturnal world.

Giving off storybook treehouse vibes at every turn, you're either strolling along a suspended walkway amid the canopy or happening upon a critter wandering the grounds, never mind what you might come across on a nighttime walk or from your balcony. And while you admire an epic sunset over a top-notch dinner, don't be surprised if you lose count of all the flitting hummingbirds busy feeding a few feet away. The staff, too, is so friendly and generous with their time, they'll grab your bags and lead you to your suite instead of handing over the key at check-in.

Pros
  • The hilltop setting is surrounded by nature, with views over the surrounding cloud forest and the Nicoya Gulf.
  • Spacious luxury cabins include plush pillowtop mattresses and imported linens, hardwood flooring, solar-powered showers, and furnished outdoor terraces.
  • The lodge is committed to sustainability and conservation, with a portion of the property designated as a private reserve.
  • Enjoy sunset views and hummingbirds from the balcony while dining at Endémica, the highly praised on-site restaurant that serves traditional Costa Rican flavors with an innovative twist.
  • You'll be perfectly placed to explore the cloud forests of both Monteverde and Santa Elena.
Cons
  • Because the lodge prioritizes environmental sustainability, it doesn't provide air-conditioning in the rooms. However, the elevation and forested surroundings often keep temperatures comfortable.
  • Rooms are without TVs, encouraging guests to unplug.

Authenticity

Cloud Forest Lodge recently underwent a significant transformation after 26 years of operation. This rejuvenation effort included renovating 20 rooms, adding five new ones, and enhancing the reception area and the restaurant. The secluded, authentic feel of the property hasn't changed; the staff hails mainly from the local community, and the updated suites feature natural hardwoods and artisan craftsmanship that echoes the natural surroundings. The lodge's restaurant, Endémica, introduces you to gourmet interpretations of traditional Costa Rican cuisine, drawing inspiration from local recipes.

Location

The lodge's grounds encompass nearly 50 acres (23 ha) of lush greenery set atop a hill. The secluded setting can require some effort to reach, especially at night, but the views of the Nicoya Gulf and Arenal Volcano make it worth the journey. The elevation of 4,823 feet (1,469 m) provides panoramic vistas, which you can enjoy from the lodge's porches and common areas. A quick 7-minute drive gets you to downtown Santa Elena, and 15 minutes takes you to Sky Adventures Park via the Monteverde Wildlife Refuge.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Cloud Forest Lodge is now an all-suite accommodation after its renovation. You can choose from Tityra Junior Suites, Euphonia Deluxe Suites, and Manakin Suites, all with hardwood flooring, plush pillowtop mattresses, imported linens, and pops of color. The rooms are spacious, with perks like outdoor terraces, robes, and turndown service. Grab one of the Junior Suites for more space and a cozy reading nook. Bathrooms are large and modern, with plentiful counter space and solar-heated showers.

Amenities

The lodge offers a selection of on-site activities, including guided night walks through the property, where you might see everything from ocelots and pumas to captivating bioluminescent creatures. Endémica restaurant is another perk, especially with its plentiful plant-based options and airy dining room surrounding an open fireplace. There's also a complimentary breakfast served each morning that gets rave reviews from past guests.

Family-Friendliness

Cloud Forest Lodge welcomes children, and its spacious Euphonia Deluxe Suites can accommodate families of four comfortably. Children over 12 are charged as adults, and the lodge doesn't offer extra cribs or beds. Though you won't find standard amenities like a pool here, active, adventurous kids will love the large grounds and plentiful wildlife, as well as the easily-accessible neighboring zipline facility. Because of the sprawling nature of the property, it's best suited to older children who can walk longer distances.

Wildlife

A sizable portion of the lodge's 50-acre (23 ha) property is a dedicated private nature reserve, part of a vital wildlife corridor linking Puntarenas and Guanacaste along the Pacific coast. Wildlife is plentiful and diverse—resident coatis, armadillos, and monkeys roam the gardens, and colorful hummingbirds frequent the feeders around the lodge's dining area.

Sustainability

Cloud Forest Lodge prides itself on being an environmentally conscious property, aligned with the Böëna Group's commitment to sustainability. The lodge charges a small per-person conservation fee, which supports various conservation and educational initiatives. Produce for the restaurant is sourced locally and sustainably whenever possible, and staff are hired from the surrounding communities. Solar panels power each room's hot shower, and the lodge uses zero single-use plastic and fully biodegradable cleaning products and detergents.

Authenticity & Character
The main building has character, with its indoor, patio and outdoor seating, allowing diners to watch the two hummingbird feeders and the bird feeder, to get great views of lovely tropical birds.

We wanted to explore the cloud forest, and this hotel is perfect for that.
Staff
Everyone went out of their way to be helpful, and the dining room staff were all very attentive.

Our room was large and comfortable, the bathroom too, and all very clean, with toiletries provided - you can leave your shampoo, conditioner and body soap at home! Theirs is made with local products and is terrific.

Authenticity & Character
Room felt like a slightly upgraded dorm room. With limited toilet paper, and wanting us to throw toilet paper in trash, access to a bidet would be a thoughtful touch. I desperately wanted a more “Tico” experience- traditional rocking chairs would be a beautiful touch to the sprawling deck.
Location
Remote- limited opportunity to explore the town- almost required dine-in at restaurant (which wasn’t a “bad thing,” just got “spendy,” but worth it!) However, great opportunity for rooftop bonfire, landscape views, sunset and star gazing!
Staff
Addressed above. Wait and Restaurant staff was top-notch.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Chillier than expected- no heater- limited blankets. Traveled with carry-on, limited space for warm clothing, had to get creative. It was fine. Curious toilet paper practices, could be cozier. BEAUTIFUL soaps and lotion. We upgraded room, in exchange we received a massively huge bathroom with vapid space- it was really “strange,” design-wise. Deck/Patio could embrace more ambiance as it is stunning and has amazing potential- it does have a coziness, which could inspire guests to linger with morning coffee, etc. In room coffee access was also very limited/scarce.

It is a crazy drive up the mountain to the very top- I'd recommend getting a transfer if you don't feel super comfortable driving. Some of the roads are completely washed out and super steep and bumpy- the drivers know what they're doing though! This hotel was absolutely gorgeous, but nothing compares to the view and vibes in the restaurant. We went during the rainy season, and our first night at the hotel there was this incredible rolling thunder, a steady rain, and misty clouds just rolling into the open air restaurant- it's cooler up in the mountains so it wasn't hot at all. We sat outside, completely protected from the rain, and played cards and had drinks for hours. Not only are the vibes incredible, but it was some of the best food we had. Everything we tried on the menu was absolutely delicious. We only stayed there for two nights, but we would have been happy there for a week at least. There is so much to see in the cloud forest, and the towns nearby have even more great restaurants. This was the highlight of our trip for sure.

Authenticity & Character
The restaurant, with the fire, open air, and rolling mists was just absolutely breathtaking.
Location
In the middle of the cloud forest- how could you go wrong?!
Staff
Everyone there was so kind! We chatted with our waiter all night long, and everyone was so patient with my Spanish- I speak pretty well but not perfectly, and can get nervous about it- but everyone was so impressed and kind!
Cleanliness & Comfort
The rooms seemed to be brand new- everything was perfectly clean, safe, and comfortable.

A truly unique hotel. Not a lot of guests stay there at one time. Plus the restaurant offers quite a bit of charm.
Location
Beautiful views. A quick taxi into town. Close to zip lining and other adventures.
Staff
Everyone was very nice and helpful, from the front desk to the restaurant.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The grounds are impeccable in terms of cleanliness. The rooms have nice soft beds. You may need to content with bugs (it is Costa Rica), but the staff will surely help if needed.

Beautiful surroundings and views. Endémica restaurant is fantastic with so many delicious options and a beautiful fireplace and balcony. Very friendly and accommodating staff.
