Restored 19th-century villa in quiet Halepa, with a courtyard pool and elegant rooms with options for Jacuzzis and terraces

Overview

Occupying a restored neoclassical villa (and the former home of Chania's French consul), this sophisticated retreat sits in the upscale neighborhood of Halepa, a quieter setting that's a quick 10-minute taxi ride from the Old Town. Guests can choose from 12 rooms and suites, each beautifully appointed with bespoke furnishings, luxury mattresses, and options for private sun terraces and outdoor Jacuzzis. Downstairs, a secluded courtyard hides a small pool, and a delightful al fresco breakfast is served by a polished staff that exemplifies Cretan hospitality.

Pros
  • You'll stay in a meticulously renovated 19th-century villa in Halepa, a quiet, upscale neighborhood outside of Old Town Chania.
  • Rooms are quietly luxurious, with elegant, contemporary decor that highlights the building's original features (we particularly loved the Junior Suite with its sun-soaked terrace and outdoor Jacuzzi).
  • Breakfast is a highlight here, with a beautifully presented spread that highlights seasonal flavors and local products.
  • The courtyard pool looks straight out of a movie set, with pink stucco walls, lush greenery, and vintage loungers and umbrellas (you can even swim laps using its reverse-flow system).
  • The staff is exceptionally kind and attentive—offering some of the best service we've ever encountered.
Cons
  • The location in Halepa puts you a little farther from Old Town Chania; you'll need to take a bus or taxi to reach it in under 20 minutes.

Authenticity

Domus Blanc is part of the Domus Elegance Collection, a group of five historic properties reimagined into boutique hotels by the Chania-born Pareskevaki sisters. Their latest offering breathes new life into an elegant 1870s villa, first built as a dowry gift for the marriage of French consul Paul Blanc and his Cretan wife, Erasmia Ligouni. Transformed by a 2025 renovation, the blush-colored villa now hosts just a dozen guest rooms, each blending original architectural features like arched windows, deep sills, and beamed ceilings with clean lines, polished decor, and handcrafted furnishings (look for nods to the building's heritage in the Ottoman-style brass screens and Art Nouveau-inspired carved headboards).

Location

You'll stay just east of Chania's Venetian walls in Halepa, an upscale residential neighborhood known for its neoclassical mansions and historic foreign embassies. It's a quieter area that's great for walking: stroll 5 minutes to the waterfront or the Archaeological Museum of Chania, or continue 10 minutes west to Koum Kapi beach. It's a 20-30-minute walk into the Old Town on foot, or you can grab a 10-minute taxi or walk 4 minutes to the bus stop, which gets you there in 20. You're also located conveniently closer to the airport, a 20-minute drive east. There's no parking on-site, but you can usually find street parking in the area.

Rooms & Bathrooms

There are just 12 rooms and suites, each beautifully appointed with bespoke furnishings, soft lighting, and plaster walls washed in soft shades of rose and sage. Luxury mattresses and linens guarantee a good night's sleep, and Nespresso machines are standard for morning wake-up calls. Bathrooms are open-plan and cleverly laid-out, with hydrotherapy showers, brass sinks, and Cretan toiletries. Classic Doubles are on the first floor, while Attic Doubles have a garret-like feel, with high ceilings and luminous skylights. Suites are particularly dreamy, some with sun-soaked terraces and an outdoor Jacuzzis.

Amenities

Breakfast is included in the rate and just as carefully curated as everything else here. Start with fresh-squeezed juices and an afternoon tea-style tower of savory and sweet bites, then choose your a la carte dish from the locally-sourced menu: think blinis with poached eggs and salmon, or omelettes with tomatoes and basil from the villa's garden. Later in the day, the restaurant switches to seasonal small plates and signature cocktails. You'll find a small, unheated pool in the secluded courtyard, surrounded by lush greenery, pink stucco walls, and vintage-style loungers, and there's also a treatment room for spa services and a small, well-equipped fitness room with a sauna.

Family-Friendliness

Children are welcome at Domus Blanc, but the hotel's small size and quiet setting mean it's more suited to couples and single travelers.
