Elia Palatino Hotel, Chania

4.5 (2 reviews) · Standard
The adults only standard hotel transforms its noble background into spacious rooms and seaside views.

Overview

The theme of the Elia Palatino is nobility, thanks to this building’s history as a former mansion. Seven rooms make up this adults only standard hotel, which offers something more in the way of spaciousness and location in the center of Chania’s harbor on the border of the old Jewish quarter. Rooms are decorated simply with aristocratic imagery. There’s no elevator here and there are quite a few stairs to climb, so this hotel is best suited for those wanting to be in the thick of things and get their steps in.

Pros
  • The rooms feel more spacious than a typical city hotel and can comfortably sleep up to two people.
  • The adults only policy means that the hotel is restricted to those 16 and up, which helps orient the space more towards a romantic vibe.
  • The location is great for those looking to have easy access to both Chania's harbor and Old Town, as the hotel is right in the middle of both.
Cons
  • This building doesn't have an elevator due to its historic status. There are some serious steps to climb here, so it’s not an appropriate place for those with mobility issues, but the hotel does offer a porter to help with guests’ bags.
  • This standard hotel is primarily just rooms and doesn’t have common facilities or even a reception, as it shares its reception with the Elia Zampeliou a few doors down. This makes it ideal for those looking to just crash in a basic but nice place in Chania.
  • While the one bedroom suite has a bathtub, it’s exposed and positioned in the bedroom itself, so this is a good option only for those who really want to share everything intimately.

Authenticity

The Elia Palatino used to be a mansion, which is the inspiration for its concept. The rooms are named after nobility and feature visual design elements like images of aristocrats covering the wardrobes or walls. The hotel taps into Chania’s upper class and wealthy history in this way but brings it into the space of an otherwise basic and standard space. It does give guests a little something interesting, as they can feel some of the presence of this past in Chania.

Location

The Elia Palatino stands in Chania’s Old Town, where it borders the Jewish quarter on one side and faces the sea on the other. Guests can park in Talos Square, which is five minutes away by foot, and once they’re settled into the hotel, can walk out the door and begin exploring.

Both the historic Etz Hayyim Synagogue and Küçük Hasan Mosque, are just two minutes away, while the beginning of the lighthouse path is 15 minutes away by foot. Those wanting to get out of Old Town can walk to the new Chania city center in about five minutes, or head to Nea Chora beach in 15 minutes by foot or five by car. If you’re looking to experience a little bit of everything in Chania – history, culture, cuisine, and more – then the Elia Palatino is the perfect place to stay.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Seven rooms make up the Elia Palatino and in this historic building, the only way to reach them is by taking the stairs. And boy, are there stairs. The standard superior room with Old Town views feels quite spacious, although if you’re looking for more space and a view of the sea, check out the one-bedroom suite. This suite includes a bathtub in the room – note that it is totally exposed, with no partition – and a small balcony. The deluxe sea view also has a balcony looking over the harbor.

All of the rooms here sleep two people maximum and there aren’t connecting room options. As an adults only hotel, the Elia Palatino accepts guests 16 or above, so these rooms are best suited for couples, friends, or families with teenagers that can spread out over a few rooms.

The location and view was spectacular, but the room was rather small and we had to lug our heavy suitcases up a whole flight off stairs.
