Gran Hotel Costa Rica, San José

Kimkim team favorite · 4.6 (17 reviews) · Luxury
Historic luxury hotel in downtown San José featuring modern design, on-site dining with city views, and a 24/7 fitness center

Overview

The Gran Hotel, built in 1930, was Costa Rica's first hotel for foreign travelers. Today, it's been fully renovated and is part of the Hilton's Curio Collection. It's protected as a historical and architectural monument, and the first four floors look similar to how the building has always looked, while the top floor is enclosed in angular glass, giving the building a modern, fresh look. The interiors are contemporary in style, with bright, spacious rooms, and the location is ideal—right next door to San José's Gold Museum and National Theater.

Pros
  • The property is a beautifully renovated historical monument in downtown San José.
  • The hotel is fairly quaint, with only four floors, clean and bright rooms, spacious suites, and modern bathrooms.
  • The top-floor restaurant/lounge offers fantastic city views.
  • The central downtown location means you're just steps away from top attractions like the Gold Museum and National Theater.
  • The fitness center is open 24/7.
Cons
  • Standard rooms are a bit small.
  • There may be some street noise from the busy city outside.
  • The hotel doesn't have a spa or a pool.

Authenticity

From the outside, Gran Hotel upholds its past with a restored facade from Costa Rica's colonial era. On the inside, the renovated hotel gives off a clean, trendy, and elegant vibe, almost like an oasis from the busy city. You might notice that the top floor stands apart from the rest of the building, with a modern look and floor-to-ceiling windows. The decor in the 5th-floor lounge and its city views are amazing.

Location

If location and luxury are your top priorities, Gran Hotel might be your best choice. You can see the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and National Theater right from your window, and a short walk will take you to most of the downtown's other attractions, including the Jade Museum, National Museum of Costa Rica, and Municipal Craft Market.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The standard rooms feel small, but the suites are quite spacious. Either way, you'll find clean, elegant, and understated decor, plus modern bathrooms equipped with all the essentials. Rooms have soundproof windows, so you can still sleep well despite being in the center of San José. Amenities include organic toiletries, custom Egyptian cotton linens, and a pillow menu.

Sustainability

San José's Gran Hotel holds a "4 Leaf" Certification for Sustainable Tourism rating, assessing the property's environmental and social impact.

Wildlife

The hotel is located in downtown San José, so guests are unlikely to see any wildlife on or near the property.

Amenities

One of Gran Hotel's biggest perks is its top floor, featuring incredible city views and an open-air restaurant, piano bar, art gallery, and lounge. Although proprietors completely renovated the space, you'll notice a few nods to the past, such as 1930s-inspired lighting, furniture, and tiled flooring. There's no pool or spa here, but the fitness center is open 24/7. The hotel's common areas are accessible, and a few rooms are specially designed for wheelchair users or travelers with hearing impairments.

Family-Friendliness

The hotel doesn't offer specific amenities or activities for kids, but they're welcome here. Up to two children under 18 can stay at the hotel for free if using existing beds in a parent/guardian's room. Cribs are provided free of charge, but additional beds or rollaway beds are not available. Adjoining rooms are available for families larger than four, and the property is stroller-friendly.

Other Highlights

The on-site restaurant, Cultura5, is located on the hotel's fifth (and highest) floor, with great views across San José. A breakfast buffet and a la carte lunch and dinner are served here, plus snacks and drinks. There's also a piano bar on the same level with happy hour specials, live music, and a full bar.

Just a Hilton from the Curio Collection. Everything was spectacularly nice (to be expected from a 5 Star hotel), but also quite divorced from a Costa Rican Experience; once inside the hotel, we could have been in almost any country anywhere. Great breakfast. Great location. Interestingly, less-than stellar restaurant staff, some of whom were slow and indifferent.
If you value the luxury hotel experience, change this rating to 5 stars.

Authenticity & Character
A luxury hotel that could be transplanted to anywhere in the world. Devoid of authenticity except the building is a bit historic.

Good front desk, great porters, great room service, and a full sized crib for our toddler, not just a pack-n-play. Restaurant staff a bit indifferent.
